Most parents give their children gifts like a doll for their little girl, and video games for their little boy. While mine did get me those things, there was nothing they ever got me that stood out like the day they brought home my baby sister. Now I realized that the initial idea behind my sister was not to give Megan “the perfect toy,” but they kind of killed two birds with one stone.


I honesty thought of my sister as a real life toy that would squirm when I poked at it, but the reaction was different each time. Granted I am only fourteen months and twenty-five days older then her, anything that laughs when you poke it is fun. That kind of toy was fun for me as a one year old. A baby is fun to play with at any age.


My mom always told us that she and dad were scared when they had found out that they had another girl. They talked about how they were worried that we would fight when we got older. They worried about us being competitive in sports toward each other, fighting over clothes, which room we got in the house, but mostly my mom worried about us fighting over boys. They were happy to find out that I was not interested in sports after I hit eight grade, we got along fine sharing our clothes, we have roomed together even when we had the choice of separate rooms, and in my eyes she has terrible taste in men.

My most memorable moment with my favorite gift from mom and dad was around the potty training era. I had the best Barbie underwear in the whole world. The greatest thing about them to me was that they were mine. Even though I loved to share with Abby, I was possessive about my underwear. I loved that Abby could not ever use them because she still wore icky baby dippers, and I was older and cooler with my Barbie underwear. One day my mom decided that Abby was ready to try and wear “biggy-girl-panties.” Well I was not okay with this and threw a fit until my mom convinced me that she was old enough to know when she had to use the potty, so I gave in and “let” her wear them. Needless to say, I am sure, Abby only made it about halfway through the day, and while mom was napping she did her deed right in MY Barbie panties. Well I was just not going to let her run around in those panties with them all gross and poopy, so I took it upon myself, with the help of my grandmother who could not walk and lived with us, I snatched her up laid her on the ground in from of my grandma’s cart and with verbal instruction for grandma changed her right back into a dipper where she belonged! This is when I realized that I would have to take matters into my own hands, and raise her myself, which is you ask my parents I did actually do. They loved every second of that too.


I would have to say she was the best gift I got before I started school, I will also say that I was sure glad to get into pre-school to get away from the real life baby doll that followed me around!
