There are some people who consider that 1th century will bring us much pollution, and the other people think that, the development of the science, 1 century will bring us many benefits to upgrade our lives. If I would be asked this issue, I would probably follow latter. In the following discussion I would like to reason and provide evidence to support my viewpoint.

No issue is more important now than the one that refers to computer and internet science. Facts witness an present many examples as below. Today, anytime and anywhere you can check your e-mail online instead of checking your mailbox outdoor; Today at office you can have your net meeting by computer instead of flying to another country to have a face to face meeting; Today in your home you can know what happen from all over the world through the internet or not by reading boring newspapers. Dont you think the examples quoted above are very persuasive?

Medicine science is another head and chief reason that I have chosen to put here. It is no better illustration that can demonstrate the view. Now with the development of medicine, many illnesses can be treated, so the peoples lives have been upgraded. The people can enjoy their life happily. If you can see that, you will understand it more deeply.

Superior as science bringing us is, however, it also have its own shortcomings, such as pollution. Nevertheless, the merits of science bring us carry more weight than that of its disadvantages. So the most striking conclusion is obvious.

Write my paper for me!!!

To sum up, given the reasons discussed above, which sometimes intertwine t form an organic whole and thus become more persuasive, we can safely arrive the conclusion that 1th century bring us advance science to improve our lives. In fact not only do I prefer to science improvement but also prefer to improve more science as much as possible.

European Chocolate

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like European Chocolate even at the eleventh hour. Godiva Europe

Godiva Europe

Godiva Chocolates, according to the case study is considered the “Queen of Chocolates.” However, as the case study also points out, the “Queen” is facing troubles gaining and keeping market share, and, as is the case with royalty throughout the world, is considered a bit expensive, and perhaps redundant. However, as the case study points out, the company has a recognized world brand, a brand name, unfortunately that suggests high price rather than quality.

Godiva International seeks to unify its image and product around the world. There is variation, however, between the image, consumption, and kinds of chocolates that consumers of different nationalities enjoy. Switzerland, Japan and the United Kingdom are the only countries that top Belgium, where the chocolate industry originated, in per capita consumption. The France, Germany, Denmark, and the United States fall respectively in behind Belgium. Belgium can, however, boast the largest share of chocolate candies with respect to total consumption. Chocolate consumption in general is higher in northern and Mediterranean Europe, due in part to the higher economic status of Western Europe. The chocolate industry in Belgium is unique. Chocolates, also called pralines, not only originated in Belgium, but the industry is well established and consumption rates are unique. Differences in consumption lie in socioeconomic classes. Belgian consumers buy chocolates as gifts and for special occasions, preferring to hand select the assortment. The chocolate industry in Belgium is similar to the flower industry in America due to reasons of purchasing. Godiva chocolates are said to be one of the more elite brands, but do not differ much from their competitors. Belgium is Godiva’s largest market and is home to the headquarters of Godiva Europe as well as the company’s factory. The French have different taste than the Belgians when it comes to chocolates. Godiva only has a small niche in France, but other Belgian chocolatiers such as Leonidas and Jeff de Bruges have larger market share. French consumption is very seasonal with 60 percent of all purchases made during Christmas time. Reasons for purchasing are similar to those in Belgium chocolates are a gift item and purchased for special occasions. Great Britain has a different climate than other European countries. While assortments of chocolate are valued, the British do not spend money on extravagant items such as Belgian confectionaries. Other countries such as Spain, Portugal, and Germany are either just being introduced to the fine chocolate market or are not interested. Chocolate is very popular in the United States. Consumers do not typically build their own assortments, but buy chocolates prepackaged. Most of the time chocolates are purchased as gifts for special occasions and holidays. Godiva has a plant in the United States that supplies 0% of its market share in the U.S.

Do my coursework

Finally, Japan has entered the chocolate industry. The market is very seasonal, with 75% of consumption occurring around Valentine’s Day. Women do most of the purchasing because they are the giver, not the receiver, of chocolates.

Marketing Mix

Packaging Packaging differs from one country to another to meet consumption needs. For instance, in the U.S., chocolates come prepackaged while in Europe and Japan chocolate assortments are custom-made. Godiva’s newest packaging strategy is to sell chocolates in collections, which are hand-made in order to ensure innovation and differentiation from competition.

Pricing Godiva Europe wishes to standardize prices in Europe to comply with the European Union. Before the Union is established, Godiva franchises only buy their necessary supplies of chocolate within that particular country. After the Union is established it will no longer be possible to keep franchises from purchasing directly from Belgium. This is a form of standardization. Prices have also increased by 10%, which the market has not easily accepted.

Place Godiva’s goal is to create a uniform and recognizable look across the board. The Godiva image, which is usually highly esteemed, has taken a dive in Europe in the past few years due to the lack of updating and care of franchises. While the Godiva image abroad is widely prestigious, a red flag has gone up because if the European image slips, the world brand image could follow. As a result, Godiva distribution has taken an active approach to improve its retail outlets. It is renovating and redesigning boutiques that will eventually encompass all Godiva stores in Europe.

Promotion Godiva wants to unify its advertising message into a global and common campaign, which leans towards the standardization end of the continuum. This task will be difficult due to the differences in the individual markets around the world. In the United States, for instance, promotion strategies have always leaned towards luxury and prestige, while in Belgium such advertising portrays a traditional and aged look. The U.S. must form a downward and more accessible theme to advertising and Belgium must take an upward approach. The new goal is to “increase the frequency of the purchase of chocolates for gifts as well as for self consumption” and to give the brand a more youthful appearance.

The main problem facing Godiva International is how to maintain the prestige of the brand name while unifying its image despite cultural barriers. The main advertising challenge is to create a common message. At first the possibility of an experimental and transition period was examined, but there was no time. Competition is a particularly prevalent challenge. The market is occupied by several other very successful brands such as Leonidas who carries 4% of the market share. Godiva does not have the production capacity that some of its competitors do. The European market is so saturated that it is hard to penetrate the market any further. Godiva also faces problems effectively utilizing its major competitive advantage having been absorbed by the Campbell Soup Company.

Godiva is on the right track in that it wants to unify its image globally. Having conflicting brand images can cause confusion and miscommunication between markets as well as within the company itself. It would be unprofitable and unsuccessful to take a “middle of the road” stance by appealing to each separate market in the same way without respecting cultural differences. Each major market can appeal to its target audiences with the same blanket message and then expand on it to fit different cultures. By doing this, Godiva will attract individual markets while at the same time unify the international corporation under the same concept.

The options that Godiva should consider is to

o Promote to Big Business by putting together Godiva gift baskets for the companies so they can give they out as client and employee’s gifts.

o Branch off the Godiva brand name into

1. Liquor

. Ice cream

. Frozen Cakes made with Godiva

o Approach luxury hotels and get them to buy Godiva so they can but on customers beds at night when the maid comes in and turn down their bed.

o Try to get more counters space in small stores like boutiques, newsstands and sporting events.

o Developed a website

o Budget lines of Godiva chocolate

In conclusion the option that I recommendations Godiva to used is Branch off the Godiva brand name into Liquor, Ice cream, Frozen Cakes made with Godiva by branching off the Godiva brand it will gain more market share in the Europe market and let people who could not afford Godiva will try it and the will start buying the regular Godiva brand Chocolate. By using the recommendation Godiva Chocolatiers will still have a deserved reputation as being the crème de la crème of luxury chocolates

Blessed

Hey you, youre a child in my head

You havent walked yet. Your first words have yet to be said

Write my paper for me!!!

But I swear youll be blessed. I know youre still just a dream

your eyes might be greenOr the bluest that Ive ever seen

Anyway youll be blessed. And you, youll be blessed

Youll have the best.I promise you that

Ill pick a star from the sky.Pull your name from a hat

I promise you that, promise you that, promise you that

Youll be blessed. I need you before Im too old

To have and to hold.To walk with you and watch you grow

And know that youre blessed.

If you wake up and dont want to smile

If it takes just a little while.Open your eyes and look at the day

Youll see things in a different way.Dont stop thinking about tomorrow

Dont stop, itll soon be hereItll be here, better than before

Yesterdays gone, yesterdays gone. Why not think about the times to come

And not about the things that youve done. If your life was bad to you

Just think what tomorrow will do. All I want is to see you smile

If it takes just a little while. I know you dont believe that its true

I never meant any harm to you. Dont you look back..

I never dreamed I could cry so hard

That aint like a man.I could fly like a bird some days

Had a place where I could land.. I could have sworn we were all locked in

Aint that what you said.I never knew it could hurt so bad

When the power of love is dead. But giving into the nighttime.

Aint no cure for the pain. You gotta wade into the water.

You gotta learn to live again. And reach out for her healing hands.

Reach out for her healing hands. Theres a light, where the darkness ends.

Touch me now and let me see again. Rock me now in your gentle healing hands

I never knew love like poison. That burned like a fire.

All I ever wanted was a reason. To drown in your eyes.

I never knew sleep so restless. Empty arms so cold.

Thats not the way its supposed to be. It aint the spell that I was sold

4 Im Your Man

If you want a lover. Ill do anything you ask me to.

And if you want another kind of love. Ill wear a mask for you

If you want a partner, hold my hand

If you want to strike me down in anger

Here I stand. Baby Im your man

If you want a boxer. I will step into the ring for you.

And if you want a doctor. Ill examine every inch of you.

If you want a driver, climb inside. Or if you want to take me for a ride.

You know you can. Baby Im your man.

The moons too bright. The chains too tight.

The beast wont go to sleep. Ive been running through these promises to you.

That I made and I could not keep. But a man never got a woman back.

Not by begging on his knees. Or Id crawl to you baby.

Id fall at your feet. And Id howl at your beauty.

Like a dog in heat. And Id claw at your heart.

And Id tear at your sheet. Id say please.

Im your man

And if you gotta sleep a moment on the road. I will steer for you.

And if yo want to work the street alone. Ill disappear for you

If you want a father for your child. Or only want to walk with me a while.

Across the sand. Baby Im your man

If you want a lover, Im your man.

If you want a boxer, Im your man

If you want a doctor, Im your man

5 I Know Why Im In Love

I wake up and I look at the clock.

In the middle of the night my heart stops

When I see you in the moonlight

I know why Im in love. Peace will come I promise you

I wish you success in all you do. And when I think about the rest

I know why Im in love

Its hard to find the kind of thing. Youve searched for all your life.

Someone bright and crazy. With a little soul inside.

And looking at you fast asleep. I thank the stars above

what more can I say. Ive said it all in different ways

The bottom line, the simple facts are true

I know why Im in love with you. I only hope you know I love you too

I kiss you and I melt inside. What you mean to me I cant describe

And if seeing is believing. Youd know why Im in love

6 Can You Feel The Love Tonight

Theres a calm surrender. To the rush of day

When the heat of the rolling world. Can be turned away.

An enchanted moment, And it sees me through

Its enough for this restless warrior. Just to be with you.

And can you feel the love tonight

It is where we are. Its enough for this wide-eyed wanderer

That weve got this far.

And can you feel the love tonight

How its laid to rest? Its enough to make kings and vagabonds

believe the very best. Theres a time for everyone

If they only learn. That the twisting kaleidoscope .

Moves us all in turn.Theres a rhyme and reason .

To the wild outdoors. When the heart of this starcrossed voyager.

Beats in time with yours.

And can you feel the love tonight

It is where we are. Its enough for this wide-eyed wanderer

That weve got this far. And can you feel the love tonight

How its laid to rest? Its enough to make kings and vagabonds.

believe the very best.

Henry Ford was born on a farm near Dearborn, Michigan, on July 0, 186, and educated in district schools. He became a machinists apprentice in Detroit at the age of 16. From 1888 to 18 he was a mechanical engineer, and later chief engineer, with the Edison Illuminating Company. In 18, after experimenting for several years in his leisure hours, he completed the construction of his first automobile, and in 10 he founded the Ford Motor Company.Automobile Production In 11 Ford began using standardized interchangeable parts and assembly-line techniques in his plant. Although Ford neither originated nor was the first to employ such practices, he was chiefly responsible for their general adoption and for the consequent great expansion of American industry and the raising of the American standard of living.By early 114 this innovation, although greatly increasing productivity, had resulted in a monthly labor turnover of 40 to 60 percent in his factory, largely because of the unpleasant monotony of assembly-line work and repeated increases in the production quotas assigned to workers. Ford met this difficulty by doubling the daily wage then standard in the industry, raising it from about $.50 to $5. The net result was increased stability in his labor force and a substantial reduction in operating costs. These factors, coupled with the enormous increase in output made possible by new technological methods, led to an increase in company profits from $0 million in 114 to $60 million in 116.By 118, half of all cars in America were Model Ts. To meet the growing demand for the Model T, the company opened a large factory at Highland Park, Michigan, in 110. Here, Henry Ford combined precision manufacturing, standardized and interchangeable parts, a division of labor, and, in 11, a continuous moving assembly line. Workers remained in place, adding one component to each automobile as it moved past them on the line. Delivery of parts by conveyor belt to the workers was carefully timed to keep the assembly line moving smoothly and efficiently. The introduction of the moving assembly line revolutionized automobile production by significantly reducing assembly time per vehicle, thus lowering costs. Fords production of Model Ts made his company the largest automobile manufacturer in the world.

Introduction

The reason I took this class is because so much of my family’s history has been entwined in the neighborhood called Bronzeville, or as some call it, The Low End. My family started migrating from Mississippi in the 140s. My Uncle Joseph was the first Allen to make the trek to the Promised Land and for him the journey was bountiful. He started a Ma and Pa grocery store on 45th and Wabash with the help of his wife, who worked as laundress. With the proceeds of both their earnings, they purchased two buildings, including the one where his store was located. After that, my family, with hope high their hearts, came up here to make their fortunes. Some succeeded and some did not. That was not really important. What was important is that they had the opportunity to succeed, an opportunity that was denied to them in the town of Itta Bena, Mississippi because of the rampant racism that existed. My own experiences with Bronzeville started in 18, when my mother, my daughter and I moved to 4th and Prairie. We lived down there until 1, and in spite of what anyone says about The Low End, I had a ball. I had never seen such colorful characters that actually existed outside of books.

Bronzeville got its name because of the mass influx of African-Americans who came to Chicago that settled in the areas between th and 51st Street, during the Great Migration. Bronzeville was once a city within a city, with its own stores, several newspapers and strong churches. This neighborhood was dubbed the Black Metropolis because of all the opportunities offered to Blacks. It became a magnet for African Americans, who were migrating from the South in droves. Jobs were plentiful and there were many Black-owned businesses such as banks, insurance companies and funeral homes. There were many social institutions to help the disadvantaged and activities for people to immerse themselves in. The nightlife was fantastic. Musicians came from all over America to play at the Regal Theater and The Savoy. There were several Blacks who lived in the Bronzeville area that became famous. They include Ida B. Wells, Ferdinand Barnett, Robert Abbott, Lionel Hampton, Richard Wright, Gwendolyn Brooks, George Cleveland Hall, T. K. Lawless, Jesse Binga, Anthony Overton, and Richard R. Wright. These African-Americans contributed many gifts that would stand the test of time.

In spite of its rich history, Bronzeville has faced a severe reversal of fortune. The losses of the stockyards and steel mills to different cities have pushed thousands of people out of the job market. Public housing projects - Stateway Gardens, Robert Taylor homes and the Ida B. Wells homes, created to give people better housing, have trapped people in poverty and fear. The middle classed have moved to the suburbs. Retail businesses and lending capital have fled to safer pastures. This once proud Black Metropolis is now one of the poorest in the entire nation. The majority of its young people drop out of high school. Joblessness is the norm. Drugs and violence are rampant.

Even with all the adversity Bronzeville has faced in recent years, this community still has several strengths - beautiful old mansions, a great location near public transportation and the Loop, many churches, and a history so thick that you can feel it. My paper will be discussing two things that were very important to the Bronzeville area during its heyday housing and religion. I will talk about the hard time Black immigrants had getting decent housing due to overcrowding, segregation and what solution was taken to correct it, but ultimately caused a bigger problem. I will also discuss the religious wars that took place between the old guard Blacks that had already settled in Chicago and the new immigrant Blacks.

There has been a great deal of renewed interest in the Bronzeville area because of its rich history, so hopefully, some of the money spent on other areas in the city of Chicago, will be spent on this beautiful city within a city, the city called Bronzeville.

Methodology

I went to the Hall Library, which is located on 48th and Michigan. I spent a many childhood day in that library, taking out and reading books, and I did the same thing for this project. I walked around the area and you could feel the history surrounding this neighborhood. I also used my own experiences while living in Bronzeville. Results

The Great Migration forced the established African American community in Chicago to make major adjustments and accommodations for its new inhabitants. Historically, black churches had, like their counterparts in the South, resisted any involvement in social issues. The arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants, however, simply could not be ignored; churches, being African Americans richest and most influential institutions, were quickly called to action in the effort to help migrants properly adjust themselves to life in Chicago.

African Americans already living in Chicago were known as the Old Settlers and they were aware of the major implications the Great Migration would have on their lifestyle. The Old Settlers had striven to establish respect from whites and a sense of equality within the citys socioeconomic system. With the arrival of the Southern Blacks, most of whom unfamiliar to city life, the Old Settlers feared that the progress they had achieved would be dashed.. White people would probably equate them with the thousands of uneducated, fresh from the country migrants. Most importantly, the Old Settlers realized the enormous strain placed on many of the migrants who, having fled the South, arrived in Chicago lacking housing or a sense of direction. From the migrations outset, African-American Chicago area churches bore the brunt of the responsibility for helping guide the migrants.

They also worried that the temptations of Chicago’s nightlife would be too much for the green as grass migrants. Down South, the church was the center of social life. Chicago, on the other hand, provided numerous outlets for entertainment (bars, nightclubs, taverns, gambling halls), many of them deemed by the ministry as deviant and destructive. African American social activist Richard Wright, Jr. emphasized the importance the church played in welcoming migrants to Chicago. He said, Get these Negroes in your churches; make them welcome; dont turn your nose and let the saloon man and the gambler do all the welcoming. Help them buy homes, encourage them to send for their families and to put their children in school (Sernett, Promised Land).

One of the first churches to help the immigrants was Olivet Baptist Church which is located on 1st and King Drive. This church assumed a major role in the process of aiding migrants. The Rev. Lacey Kirk Williams, the minister at that time, sent members of his church to several Chicago train terminals to meet incoming passengers. Church members greeted the newcomers and immediately directed them to places of assistance. Olivet quickly transformed itself into a social service center for migrants, providing them with food and clothing, while assisting them in the obtainment of housing and employment. They also hosted a wide variety of social, educational, and recreational activities, and soon gained a reputation throughout the South as an oasis of mercy in the urban desert (Sernett, Promised Land).

There would be major clashes between the migrants and the established Blacks, some of which concerned religion but most of which had to do with class status. The new migrants did not like the Northern churches. The migrants felt that these churches were cold and impersonal. They were used to the expressiveness of the churches down South and to them, the Northern church services were restrained. The established Northern Blacks felt that the new migrants were countrified and embarrassing. They liked the calmness of their church services and did not want to change. They were also concerned about their own hierarchy in Chicago.

Some churches compromised their traditional religious practices in order to accommodate their new members. They incorporated gospel choirs, and added new, more vibrant songs to their traditional church hymns. Ministers livened up their sermons by interjecting shouts and encouraging emotional responses from the congregation. Still, the migrants still found themselves set apart by their class status, appearance and demeanor. The condescending attitudes toward the migrants by the predominately upper-class church congregations did not help the situation. They made fun of the migrants clothes, accents, and lack of education. It always amazes me that in spite of all the racism we have endured from other cultures that we would treat each other so shabbily.

Some of these migrants eventually left these churches and started their own denominations. The churches came to be know as Storefront Churches. These churches tried to recreate the Southern rural churches that the majority of the migrants were used to. E. Franklin Franzier explained that the storefront churches represented an attempt on the part of migrants, especially from the rural areas of the South, to re-establish a type of church to which they were accustomed (Sernett, Promised Land).

Of course, the established Black churches felt that these churches were a slap in their faces. They felt that these churches were a disgrace to the African-American race and nothing more than a minstrel show. The preachers from these churches were derided for their lack of formal training and were subjected to accusations including defrauding their flock of money, being agents in the numbers racket, and of immoral sexual behavior (Sernett, Promised Land). Despite such criticisms, storefront churches persisted, and exist to this very day, their presence a testament to the strength of migrants willingness to keep their Southern heritage and an unwillingness not to bow down to those who looked down their noses upon them.

The new migrants having settled the issue of religion, now had to deal with housing. The majority of people lived in tenement housing and there were many horror stories about overcrowding, rats and insects. However, living conditions in Chicago, though overcrowded, were similar to housing conditions in the South. Down South, most migrants had lived in three or four room cabins. It was not uncommon for as many as five people to sleep in one room.

But this was The Promised Land, and things were suppose to be better. As soon as they were able to get themselves together, they changed residences. Living conditions were used as a measure of the success or failure of the migration. A family succeeded when they secured a place of their own.

One of the most popular living spaces for migrants were kitchenette apartments. They were called that because everything was enclosed in one room, including the kitchen. They are similar to what we call an efficiency apartment today, except a bit smaller and housing more people. Families of four and up lived in these small spaces. A many family took an apartment like this, dreaming of the day when a better life would come along. I came to know this type of apartment very well. My mother, my baby daughter and I lived in a kitchenette apartment from 18 to 1. We had been burned out of our previous apartment and lost everything we owned. We needed to start off from scratch and save some money in the process. Unlike the migrants, we did have two separate rooms. The kitchen was actually pretty large and so was the bedroom/living space. It was a unique experience living in that apartment. There was a pimp and his two ladies of night living down the hall, and they would fight everyday. Living across the hall was a lady named Dorise, and she would get drunk everyday. Her boyfriend was a drunk too, and one time when he was laid out across the lawn in a drunken stupor, someone stole his brand new Reebok gym shoes off his feet. When the first of the month came (check time), the tenants of 44 South Prairie would party like it was New Year’s Eve. It was truly an experience I will never forget.

By the 140s, as more migrants flooded Bronzeville, there was less and less space for them to move into. Already decrepit apartments became overcrowded and living conditions became worse. To alleviate this overcrowding, many Blacks attempted to move to into neighboring areas and out to the newly emerging suburbs. However, they met massive white resistance, both political and violent, forcing Blacks to stay confined in the overcrowded and dilapidated slums of the South Side. The City of Chicago needed to do something about these conditions; there was a serious housing shortage and the migrants either did not have the money to move elsewhere, or could not because of white resistance. The Chicago Housing Authority, a government agency, attempted to solve the housing problems of the South Side by building affordable housing projects.

The first of these housing projects to finished were the Ida B. Wells Homes, and they were completed in 141. The next to be finished were The Dearborn Homes, which are located from 7th to 0th streets and from State Street to the Rock Island Railroad tracks. They were completed in 150. They were designed by Loebl, Schlossman and Bennet and represented the CHA’s first high-rise public housing project. They ranged from 6 to stories. The most notorious of the housing projects built by the CHA were The Robert Taylor Homes, Chicagos (and the countrys) largest housing project. They were completed in 16. They were named after Robert R. Taylor, the commissioner of the CHA from 18-150. Robert Taylor resigned from the CHA in 150 after realizing that the political forces in Chicago would prevent the CHA from building unsegregated public housing. These political forces wanted Blacks isolated and segregated from the rest of Chicago. And it worked.

The Robert Taylor Homes, consisting of 8 identical sixteen-story buildings practically guaranteed segregation because it was built in the middle of the slums of Bronzeville, keeping its over 8,000 residents isolated. By stacking people literally on top of each other, the CHA was able to house many people on this two-mile piece of land. The architects, who designed this madness, had hoped that the open space surrounding the Robert Taylor Homes would give its residents a sense of closeness to the outdoors, making The Robert Taylor Homes a suburbia within the city. However, the land surrounding the buildings served more as an isolating factor more than anything else. The enormous buildings stood isolated from the rest of the city. Because of its isolation, these projects became a hot seat of criminal activity, that included drug trafficking, gang wars and murder. Public housing, instead of giving the poor an outlet of hope, continued the vicious cycle of poverty and turned Bronzeville into a ghetto.

Conclusion

Bronzeville was once a bustling center of activity for African-Americans who wanted to better their lives. Once the jobs left the community, it took the heart out of Bronzeville. The projects took its soul. What is left now is an empty shell of broken beer bottles and shattered dreams. There has been a great deal of renewed interest in Bronzeville, and some of the old, abandoned buildings are being rehabbed. New businesses are coming back and putting money in the community. If this interest continues, this neighborhood can be great again, but two key ingredients are needed to make this dream come true. The churches of Bronzeville have to take a more active role in the lives of its inhabitants, like they did in when the Migration first started. The ministers cannot turn a blind eye to the gang violence and drug activity that still plagues this area. The residents of Bronzeville also have to take a stand and not allow their neighborhood to continue its descent into the gutter. The residents have to teach their children about Bronzeville’s rich history, that Bronzeville was built on the blood, sweat and tears of Black migrants who came to Chicago with nothing in their pockets but dreams and a hope for the future. The children of Bronzeville should never be allowed to forget this. Bronzeville is the proverbial diamond in the rough. Let’s hope its shine will come through.

Budd

There is much to be said about innocence. If one is with

innocence than one can do no wrong. But that is not all to be said.

Write my paper for me!!!

Innocence is not always a good thing. It could make one naive or blind

to certain evils. Like in the case of Billy Budd. Billy was innocent

from evil and therefore could not see the evil of John Claggart

approaching him, out to destroy him. It is known Billys innocence was

his down fall by hiding the true evil from his eyes. But why was John

Claggart out to destroy Billy?. There are several reasons why John

Claggart attempts to destroy Billy Budd.

John Claggart wants to destroy Billy because he is extremely wary

of Billys intentions. He has come to believe that Billy is planning a

mutiny and wants to take over the ship. Claggart reports this to

captain Vere saying, During todays chase and possible encounter I

had seen enough to convince him that at least one sailor aboard was

dangerous. Meaning that he felt Billy was against them. Claggart felt

that Billys big plan was to get in favor of all the men on the ship

and then turn them against the captain. Captain Vere responds by

having Billy and Claggart meet in private where Claggart can openly

accuse Billy of this crime. Fortunately, Claggarts attempt to destroy

Billy for mutiny fails because he is struck down by Billy in one blow,

ending the matter, but opening a much more serious one.

Claggart is also seen as attempting to destroy Billy due to his

evil nature in general. Nothing depicts Claggarts evil nature better

than the way he looks. His cleanly chiseled chin and cunning violet

eyes that can cut lesser sailors with an evil glare. His pale yellow

skin and jet black curly hair; they all contrast his character. He is

out to destroy Billy because of the constant struggle of good and

evil. Billy is innocent and cannot comprehend evil therefore making

him good. People calling Billy baby budd, and handsome sailor just

seem to contrast the good in him even more. Claggart was born evil and

therefore is evil. Claggart would naturally be out to destroy Billy

because he is what he is against. Just good vs. evil in a battle for

control. That is why Claggart is naturally out to bring the downfall

of Billy Budd.

It is very true that jealousy is another reason why John Claggart

wanted the destruction of Billy Budd. Claggart was never well liked by

the crew he was watching over. This would not have been a problem

except that Billy Budd was so very liked by the crew. Every time he

saw the love of Billy he was reminded of the dislike of himself. One

old sailor on the ship noticed this too and warned Billy by saying,

Jimmy Leggs is down on you. Jimmy Leggs referring to Claggart. One

instance which occured in the kitchen just made matters worse when

Billy spilled the soup he was making and it ran down the corridor just

as Claggart was walking by. Claggart did not openly get angry at Billy

for the accident, but inside felt he had done it on purpose. As the

soup ran down the corridor it seemed to symbolize an actual line drawn

between the two. The resentment Claggart felt for Billy made him look

him too critically. That is a good reason why Claggart could have

thought Billy was planning a mutiny and would want him destroyed. He

was just jealous of Billys popularity.

There are several reasons why John Claggart attempts to destroy

Billy Budd. One might ask why and come up with the obvious and not so

obvious answer, even though we know the real reason for his downfall.

That was his innocence. Yes, Billy Budd was innocent of evil, but that

innocence is what made him unable to see the evil out to destroy him

in Claggart. Too much innocence is not always a good thing, but a

little helps from doing wrong. There is quite a bit to be said about

innocence.

Child by Tiger - human good and evil

Authors have the ability to create a story that deeply relates to the human experience. They can create characters that resemble real people on both the outside and inside. Their actions show how people feel inside. In The Child by Tiger (reprinted in Laurence Perrine and Thomas R. Arp, Literature Structure, Sound, and Sense, 6th ed. [Fort Worth Harcourt, 1]), the author Graham Greene has done just that. Dick Prosser is used to actively portray the usually visible good portion of the human being, as well as the evil that is commonly hidden within.

During the first half of the story, Dick Prosser seemed to have the traits of the purest person. He was a very plain man, who likewise led a very plain life. His one room home was kept clean and orderly on a daily basis, which showed that he was a simple man with only basic needs. The one possession of his that he greatly valued was his bible, which he kept in the center of his room. “…an old bible almost worn out by constant use, for Dick was a deeply religious man” (5). Being so openly religious is something that would classify Dick as a good man.

Dick Prosser was very kind to those around him. He showed respect for those that deserved respect, despite what he thought of them. He showed great respect to the children of the house, by calling them “Cap’n” and “Mr.”. When Dick’s car was hit by another that was driven by a drunken Lon Everett, Dick held back his fist as he took the blows from the man who had caused the accident. This shows that Dick withheld class on the outside, even though the pain on the inside grew.

Dick expressed the hatred and evil that builds up inside of human beings as well. People lie to disguise their negative feelings, as did Dick when the two young boys of the house found his gun. Dick made up a story to cover the truth about his intentions.

Do my coursework

When Dick killed his ex-lovers newfound beau, he symbolically expressed the feelings that humans feel inside but don’t and for the most part would never fully voice. Once the last thing that he held the closest to his heart was taken from him, he couldn’t handle anymore. Then he began to shoot any and everyone that he could. But to him they weren’t people that he was shooting. They were merely there for him to release all of his bottled up hatred and anger onto.

When Dick was caught, he did not try to escape. “…he sat down calmly on the bank… he unlaced his shoes, took them off, placed them together neatly at his side, and then stood up like a soldier, erect, in his bare bleeding feet, and faced the mob” (6). This description of Dicks actions leads one to believe that Dick was not an evil person at heart, and that he was just relieving himself of all of the emotions he felt inside and couldn’t contain any longer. He was proud that he had finally done this. After the men on horseback killed Dick, the riddling of the body did not stop. The men kept shooting, and they were proud of it afterwards. This action by all of these men show the evil that is inside of humans as well. They found enjoyment out of killing. It was a different kind of evil that was shown through Dick. They did not do it because they had been fed up, as did Dick.

Graham Greene used the character Dick Prosser to show both the angelic and devilish sides of a human. Dick took actions towards or against all of his thoughts, whether right or wrong. He revealed things he felt through ways that people know they cannot. He was a character symbol of a human beings emotions.

Imagine you are walking across the grasslands in South America and you see a large animal. What could this animal be? It’s an Anteater. Anteaters live in Central and South America. As you know, Anteaters eat ants. But they also eat termites and grubs. Did you know that it takes 5,000 ants or termites to fill up an Anteater? Right after a baby anteater is born they climb on to their mothers back. They do this because if a baby anteater is just walking an animal could eat it. Once the baby is too old it cannot climb onto its mother’s back. There are different kinds of anteaters the Silky Anteater, Tamudua Anteater, and the Giant Anteater. Most of the Anteaters are covered with stiff brown or gray hair. Anteaters sticky tongues can be up feet in length! They also have strong legs, sharp claws, and they can smell very well. Anteaters are known for there long tube like muzzles and mouths. Anteaters are very important to our forests and grasslands because they help keep our environment in balance.

How do you spend time when you’re not in class; focus on what you’ve gained

The finish line flutters lightly in the breeze. My lungs exhale and I gasp for air as my legs wobble beneath me. Shooting pains stab my abdomen and legs. My throat contracts and I feel like my body is going to explode into a thousand tiny pieces. And not a single person understands how horrible I feel…

“Keep going Monique! You look strong. Kaite is a few seconds ahead of you; you can catch her!” my coach, Jerry dashes past me, shouting out words of support. Sounds like a great idea; however, my legs are weights, each stride dragging me down as I progress one step closer to the finish line in sheer agony. Sweat slowly streams down my entire body and my chest squeezes tightly against me, like a snake capturing its prey. He thinks I appear strong, but my body is screaming, Please Stop!

Water, I need water. My eyes catch a glimpse of Kaite, right ahead of me. My legs become numb, I feel the wind breezing through my hair as the sun beats its unforgiving heat down on my shoulders. A tear rolls gently down my cheek as I lose all feeling in my body. Just run Monique, finish! My body flies through the chute, passing the finish line and I almost collapse.

What am I doing? During basketball season, I sprint up and down the court with ease, never winded or panting. My spot on the cross-country team is of no surprise to anyone. If I can finish a simple sprint before anyone else is halfway up the court, I should absolutely succeed at this.

The timer flatly calls out, “Twenty-three minutes and thirty-eight seconds.” I can barely drag my body out of the chute to the wooden benches, under the cool shade of the ancient oak trees. I glance at Kaite. She lies on the lush lawn, motionless, but she can finish a race in twenty-two minutes. My dad congratulates me. Chest heaving, my lungs eagerly thirst for just one small gulp of fresh air.

This is it; my entire cross-country career depends on today’s events; we run six miles every practice, training for this .-mile league meet. Ten teams are competing for victory, yet I place second in my school. Why am I not satisfied? Perhaps it is because every runner from every school besides Dublin has beaten me.

I pat my face with my sweat-soaked, red and blue jersey and splash a bottle of icy water on my face. Rejuvenated, my senses return to me. Everyone finishes the race and begins to crowd around me. Jerry inquires if I will try out for the team next year. He announces that I will be a senior leader, but my body will not permit me to do this any longer. My heart pounding, legs throbbing, and throat constricting greedily for air, I can not do this anymore!

My father hands me a sandwich and I devour it ravenously, stewing over my performance. I practice and practice for a measly medal and come up shorthanded. Although my overall ranking is horrible, I somehow manage to place second in Dublin and my father is overcome with pride. Suddenly, I decide that my physical well-being is far more important than any medal, and earning second in my school is remarkably admirable. I gaze at Kaite once more and realize that I do not need to trade places with her in order to be content with life. I throw my shoes over my shoulder, a casual smile gradually growing on my face. My effort is undoubtedly worth first place, yet second is quite respectable. No matter what I do, if I give one hundred and ten percent, I will try not to let second discourage me. This newfound satisfaction is better than any material object I could ever obtain, and still holds true for my own life.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES

work or play. These are just a few choices that you will be faced

with in the everyday world. What you choose would determined

you are prioitizing on that paticular day.

Some of the choices that you have to make could be very

easy ones, where as ithers could be very complex. you may not want

to make a choice but are being persuaded by an outside force. This

happened more than once in the play Macbeth, and here is one example

of a quote from lady Macbeth to Macbeth; art thou afeared to be the

same in thine own act and valour as thou desire? Wouldst thou have

that which thou esteemst the ornament of life. and live a coward in thine

own esteem, letting I dare not wait upon I would , like the poor cat

I the adage. In this quote Lady Macbeth is trying to convince Macbeth

to kill king Duncan so that he may get the throne, Macbeth isnt as keen

on the idea as his wife is, however he eventually agrees to go

through with it.

Macbeth chose to kill his own king in the hope that he could

further himself in the world at someone slses expense. His choice

tp commit this hannus act is contradicting a statement that he had

earlier made to the king himself. Your highness part is to receive

our duties and out duties are to your throne and state, childrena and

servants which do but they should, by doing everything sage toward your

love and honour. Macbeth saying these lines stating his loyality shows

what a thin line there is between loyality and selfishness.

The way choices are made is different by every person, however

the thoughts in our mind are the same for the majority of the population.

Every person wants him/herselfsuced in a convining way, so every discussion

made will be with the intention of helping themselves or the class, which

they fit into. A modern day example of this would be teachers fighting for

themselves and each other in order to ensure the well being of their occupation.

They did not go on strick to help the student, they went on strick to help

themselves and better their occupation. This is one example of one group

trying to help themselves and neglecting the other group.

In the play Macbeth there is a quote from the lady Macbeth that is a

great example of this in every point twice done, and then done double,

were poor and single business, to contend against those honors deep and

broad, where with you majesty loads our house. For those of old, and the late

dignitiesheapd up to them, we rest your hermits. Lady Macbeth is trying

to promote equality amoung all people, however only seeing her side of

the story.

When opportunity beckons there are those that would give up anything

to further themselves. This includes family and friends.

Characters of all kinds have different lives and personalities that can shape them for who they are. These factors can affect their motivation, influences, and conflicts that happen upon in their lives. In the short story, “Soldier’s Home” Ernest Hemingway gives us a WWI veteran, Harold Krebs, who has just come back from the war however, his influences and conflicts from the war have changed him from whom he used to be before the war.

Harold Krebs, only recently returned from World War I, has moved back into his parents house, while trying to figure out what he plans on doing with the rest of his life. However, a few of his local soldier buds, in the war, had been at home years before he got his chance to settle himself back home. Later upon his arrival back home, Harold had felt the need to talk, but no one at that time wanted to hear about it. Apparently the town had heard too many atrocity stories already to be thrilled by actualities. With all of the war stories told, from every situation known possible during the war, Krebs finds that to be listened to, all that he has to do is lie. As time goes by with Krebs telling his untruthful stories twice, he too has a negative reaction against the war and against talking about it. But with Harold, the situation is more dramatic because in the war he had not only been living on his own, but had to deal with his traumatizing life-and-death situations that his parents could not possibly ever understand. Therefore, Harold feels the need to keep the truth from being exposed and the need to keep it all to himself, being less expressive and social to people.

As time goes by, with Harold adjusting back to his town and his old ways of living Hagood

in the town, Harold begins to fall behind with acceptance. The problem, of course, has to do with Harolds definition of who he has become. He recognizes he has changed, and plays it dramatically against his old idea of his town, where nothing else has changed since he was in high school. His father, parking the car in the same place, the girls walking down the street, looking like the same girls, except now, with more of them having short hair, were some of the backdrops of what he had in mind before he left off to war. With these changes, Harold begins to have a hard time adjusting himself back to the way things were before he went off to war. While imagining Harold, looking across the street at these girls, one gets the sense while reading a, Soldiers Home, that watching these girls would be a healing process. Krebs admires the girls, yet he protects himself from the danger of sexual involvement as if he were still suffering from a previous affair. With this, we can begin to get the sense of Harold loosing his love towards people. Harold’s motivation with him loosing his love to people, comes from the many years of being in the war. With Harold being in the war for so long, away from his loved one, with not much time to think of them, had begun to loose the feeling and expression of love.

We can begin to see his lose for wanting and expressing love when Harold’s his mom asked him if he loves her. With not taking any time to think about her question, Harold quickly responds with “no.” With this being said, we can begin to see how Harold has lost his expression for love. However, Harold catches himself by saying how he didn’t

mean for what he said about not loving her. Meanwhile, as his mother begins to cry and feel the lose of her sons love, Harold come up with saying how he didn’t mean what he Hagood

said about not loving her. While inside, Harold has forgotten, with being in the war, what love is and how to truly express it.

In the short story Soldier’s Home, Harold Krebs, is faced with many challenges from, avoiding the truth, to the acceptance of the towns changes, to him loosing the need and expression of love. Through the years of being in the war, influences, and conflicts have all played a key role in Krebs arrival back home.

Composition and Direction of Australia’s trade

The composition of trade refers to the various commodities or sectoral groupings, which make up the total trade in exports and imports for a country. The direction of trade refers to those economies that buy the goods a country produces, exports, or the economies where goods are purchased from, imports. The composition and direction of Australia’s trade has changed significantly in the 10’s as a result of a broadened export base, increased international competitiveness, rapid growth rates of neighbouring countries and a number of structural changes.

Australia is basically a commodity exporter and importer of capital goods.

Traditionally Australia has relied on exports of rural products and primary production as a result of its factor endowment and its distinct competitive advantage in the production of these goods. A major percentage of export revenue depends on the sale of primary products and will continue to do so. But commodity prices fluctuate widely and have shown a falling trend relative to manufacturing and services. Thus throughout the 180’s and 10’s Australia’s composition of exports has changed significantly.

Do my coursework

In the 10’s Australia’s export base has broadened and diversified, as a result of increased value adding and growth in global markets. Australia has particularly increased its exports of services and Elaborately Transformed Manufactured goods (ETM’s), that are high value added. ETM’s (vehicles, industrial equipment) grew by % per year over the nine years to 14 and now constitute % of all our exports. Exports of services (tourism, education, and health) grew at 14% per year since 186/87 and now make up 4% of all exports.

The structural shift towards ETM’s and services is a result of

- An improvement in international competitiveness, that is, our ability to compete with foreign products, due to government reforms, and at times a fall in our exchange rate.

- The rapid growth rate of Asia, which allows Australia to provide its neighbours with the productive skills ETM’s require.

- Growth in the Australian tourism industries Tourists from newly industrialising Asian economies have become important markets.

Manufactured goods dominate Australia’s imports. The most important group of imports is intermediate goods (eg parts) which are used in production by Australian firms and contributed to 7% of Australia’s imports in 1/00. Capital goods are also significant (eg machinery and equipment), 1% of total imports in 1/00, and consumption goods (eg motor vehicles, toys, books, and leisure items) contributed to 1% of Australia’s imports in 1/00. Services are also very prominent, (eg transportation services) and contributed to 1% of imports in 1/00.

Throughout the 10’s there have only been small changes in the nature of Australia’s imports of goods and services in recent years. Only capital goods have become more important in our imports.

Changes in the composition of Australia’s exports are closely linked with the changes in the direction of Australia’s trade. The major change in Australia’s trade relations was the switch away from British and European markets to Japan and Asia.

As a result of new Asia markets opening up and the growth of export markets, over the past decade, shares of Australian exports for South East Asia, the ASEAN countries have grown the most with China, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan closely following. Japan remains Australias largest single export market, buying about one-fifth of total merchandise exports, with the Republic of Korea, China, Indonesia, Taiwan and Singapore also in the top ten of Australias export markets. The United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom continue to be important markets.

North East Asian countries have overtaken the USA as Australia’s major source of imports. China has shown the most growth in import shares rising from .1% in 10-1 to 6.% by 18-. The ASEAN countries have nearly doubled their import share from 7.1% in 10-1 to 1.7% in 18-.

Much of the growth in Australia’s export and import merchandise trade is due to

- Higher rates of internationalisation or trade intensity(ie the ratio of imports and exports to GDP)

- Trade liberalisation in the region due to WTO, APEC and ANZCERTA initiatives.

- Various bilateral trade agreements between Australia and its trading partners.

The composition of Australia’s imports and exports and the various destinations to which these products go to and come from have changed significantly in the 10’s. The composition of Australia’s trade has changed as a result of a broadened and diversified export base, and a focus away from primary products to value added ETM’s and services. The direction of Australia’s trade has moved away from European countries and the USA, to Asian countries as a result of a growth in these markets and new markets opening. The greater globalisation of the world economy has seen Australia change the composition and direction of its trade over the past decade.

It is the single most craved food in the country. Some people even swear they are addicted to it. The chocolate Archives say that “North Americans spend $8. billion dollars a year on chocolate and consume nearly 1 pounds of it per person a year. 7% of the people in this class even say it is one of their favorite flavors. So is Chocolate the food of the gods, and indulgence, or a necessity of life? Through out the rest of my speech I will tell you the brief history of chocolate, how it is made and how chocolate affects your health.

For over 000 years chocolate….like gold has had a universal appeal. The history of chocolate traces its roots back to the Aztecs. According to the Chocolate of the Month newsletter, “the Aztecs attributed the creation of the cocoa plant to their God who, descended from heaven on a beam of a star carrying a cocoa tree stolen from paradise.” This cocoa tree was often represented in their religious rituals as the food of the gods.

In the Aztec culture cocoa was the basis for a thick cold, unsweetened drink. Since sugar was unknown to the Aztecs, different spices were used to add flavor. They even used hot chili peppers and corn meal. The Aztec emperor, Montezuma drank the thick chocolate drink out of golden goblets. The drink was so prestigious that the goblets were thrown away after only one use.

The Aztecs kept the secret of chocolate quiet for quite along time, it was not until 158 when Hernando Cortez of Spain presented the Spanish King, Charles V with cocoa beans from the New World did the chocolate craze take off. Cortez decided that if this bitter beverage were blended with sugar, it could become quite a delicacy. The Spaniards then mixed the beans with sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon. This resulted in a desirable and modern drink desired by all through out the country. The Spaniards kept the secret of chocolate from the rest of the world for almost 100 years.

When the word calcium is said usually the first thing that comes to mind is not a chemical, but milk or vitamins. Calcium is in fact an important chemical that benefits use in many ways. But how was it first discovered? Who discovered it? What does it do?

A scientist discovered calcium in 1808 by the name of Sir Humphrey Davy. Sir Humphrey Davy discovered calcium by isolating it with electrolysis of a mixture of lime and mercuric oxide (HgO). The Romans prepared compounds such as lime in the first century under the name calx. This is where the name for calcium derived from. Since it came from the Latin word calx, which means lime.

Calcium is a metallic element that is derived from the earth’s crust, of which it forms more than three percent. It is the bases for such items as leaves, bones, teeth, and of course shells. It is one of the alkaline earth elements; Calcium forms a white coating nitride in air, reacts with water, and burns with a yellow-red flame, forming largely the nitride.

Calcium is distinguishable by its metal silvery color and that it is rather hard as well. Limestone, gypsum and fluorite are some things that calcium is usually found in. The melting point for Calcium is 8 °C and it’s boiling point is at 1484 °C. It has a density of 1.55 g/cm³ and an atomic radius of . Å.

Some uses of calcium are that it is essential for human nutrition and that animals’ skeletons get their rigidity primarily from calcium phosphate. Eggs of birds and shells of mollusks are also comprised of calcium carbonate. Calcium, like for humans, is essential for plants it also is used in making lime, bricks, cement, glass, paint, paper, sugar, glazes, as well as for many other uses.

Calcium is an important piece of our periodic table. Event though it is only two letters (Ca) on the table it has a meaning farther then that of which is there. It is essential for life and for plants and with out calcium the human race would need to find another source that could help repair and strengthen our bones. Fortunately if it wasn’t for Sir Humphrey Davy we wouldn’t be able to take our vitamins and see that it is composed of calcium. Women also need calcium for not only themselves but for their children as well. The importance of calcium reaches out farther then in this paper, it is just a necessity.

Sioux

The Sioux Native American tribes were made of small bands of woodland peoples that came to North America from Asia. Their straight black hair and other features seemed to connect them to the Chinese and Japanese. They first lived west of the Great Lakes in the Mille Lacs region of present day Minnesota. Most were pushed west into South Dakota by other tribes. By 1750, the Sioux made up some 0,000 people in the northern Great Plains. They dominated this region for the next century.

The name Sioux is an abbreviation of the French spelling of the name Nadouessioux, meaning little snakes, giving to then by neighboring Chippewa enemies. The Sioux are from the Siouan language group. They call themselves Dakota, Lakota, or Nakota, according to dialect, meaning allies. The Sioux language is spoken in three principal dialects, Santee, or eastern; Yankton, or middle; and Teton, or western. These dialects differ mainly in the exchange of the letters d, n, and l.

The Sioux Native Americans lead a nomadic life. Their movement depended on the buffalo. The buffalo provided them with almost everything they needed. When a buffalo was killed, some of the meat was cooked and eaten. The rest was cut into strips, dried on racks and stored for the winter. The hide of the buffalo was used to make moccasins, clothes, and tepees. Their horns were made into cups, bowls, and tools The Sioux also lived on small game, deer, and wild rice, and were surrounded by large rival tribes. Conflict with their enemy, the Chippewa, forced the Sioux to move to the buffalo ranges of the Great Plains. As the Sioux became better buffalo hunters, their tribes grew and prospered.

Customs, not laws governed the Sioux Native Americans. Instead of giving orders, the chiefs offered advice. There were different chiefs for different purposes including War Chiefs, Civil Chiefs, and Medicine Men. These chiefs would meet regularly to discuss tribal matters. If a new rule was to be instituted, they had to have the approval of the whole tribe before instating it.

The Sioux were a warrior group so the War Chief was highly respected and vital in their tribe. A successful warrior could become a chief if the whole tribe elected him. He could also lose that honor if the tribe lost confidence in him. Young men were trained to be strong and brave. Before going to war, warriors gained courage and strength by dancing to songs and drumbeats. They painted their bodies and horses with colors and symbols representing spirits that would protect them.

The basic social unit of the Sioux was an extended family group that traveled together in search of buffalo called the tiyospe. The Sioux character slanted toward extremes. Infidelity in marriage was punished by disfigurement, an infraction of hunting regulations led to destruction of tepee and property, and mourners inflicted slashes on themselves during burial ceremonies.

They believed in one omnipotent god, Wakan Tanka, or the Great Mystery. Religious visions were cultivated in the ghost dance ceremony. One most important feature of the ghost dance was the ghost shirt. Because buckskin was in short supply, these shirts were almost always made of white cloth. The Sioux wore no metal of any kind in the dance. The dance sometimes began in the morning, as well as in the afternoon or evening.

To the Sioux, the earth was a great island plain surrounded by an ocean far to the west of the spirit world. In a magic house upon the top of a high mountain and guarded by four sentinel animals at the four doorways, lived the Wakinyan, or thunders, the greatest of the gods, and enemies of the earth spirits and the water spirits. The sun also was a great god.

Dreams were thought to be direct revelations of the supernatural. Fasting and sacrifices, including voluntary torture, were frequent. Among the ceremonies the annual sun dance was highly important. During this ceremony the principal performers danced for four days and nights, without food, drink, or sleep, enduring painful body lacerations. The warrior orders and various secret societies each had their special dance, and for young girls there was a puberty ceremony.

Since the battle at Wounded Knee, life has been very difficult for the Sioux Native Americans. Early Sioux schools tried to take away the children from the adults. The children were forced to think and act like whites and were punished for speaking their native tongue. Today about 0,000 Sioux live on reservations in South Dakota. There are also smaller reservations in North Dakota, Nebraska, and northeastern Montana. A few also live in Canada. Many have been forced to move to cities to find work.

The housing on the reservations is substandard. The wooden cabins they live in rarely have running water or electricity. Despite their difficulties, the Sioux strive to preserve their traditional lifestyle. Tribes today are usually governed by a tribal council with a chairman and other officers who are elected by the tribe. Of the 10,55 Sioux in the United States and Canada in 10, most lived on reservations in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Nebraska. They retain their language and its three principle dialects. The Sioux have been active in the modern Native American civil rights movement, seeking restoration of their land and the institution of a modernized form of traditional life. They have been involved in the American Indian Movement (AIM), a civil rights group that has actively protested government treatment of Native Americans since the late 160s.
