Elvira doesn’t like Ruth and tries to get rid of her. She successful does. However, Ruth’s spirits appears before Elvira for revenge but then both Elvira and Ruth wanted Charles for themselves so they decided to devise a plan in order to get Charles killed so that he could live with both of them happily ever after. Both Ruth and Elvira succeeded.
The story basically talks about the death of this and that person. However, what Coward is trying to say to his audience is that death is okay. Death is something which all of us must face at the end. It is the inevitable. None of us humans can escape death. My answer made him flinch. He hugged his sleeping son hard against his chest and said, ‘They don’t think of Our Lord at all, do they? They live only for the present and have no thought for hereafter.’ I began to protest, but Ustaz Mustafa was not interested in my answers any more.(50)” This quote emphasized the fact that Muslims are stubborn and have a difficult time understanding any beliefs contrary to their own.

However, all his justifications were thrown out the window when Lizaveta paid an unexpected visit because Raskolnikov had foolishly forgotten to have shut the door and lock it. In a rather quickened (and panicked) fashion, he took care of Lizaveta the same way he did Alyona. This senseless murder of Lizaveta was intended to only benefit Raskolnikov’s way of not going to jail for his crime he had committed; it was null and void for any and all justifications that Raskolnikov ever had for killing Alyona.

What Dostoyevsky did in the novel, Crime and Punishment, was make the surrounding environment of St. Petersburg, Russia, during the 1850s, be a noticeably decaying place of both moral and virtue and with this theme of the city being in a constant downward spiral, the author was able to reflect the protagonist’s psyche, Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, based off of this environment. With the morality of St. Petersburg slowly crumbling day by day because of how wretched and vile this hive filled with scum, villainy, poverty, smut, and drunkenness was, it could easily be compared to the same of Raskolnikov’s mental state and moral values. Although, Raskolnikov’s mental state is going down the drain like the rest of society, he still thinks very highly of himself and is made to believe that he is above everyone else because he considers his murder of Alyona to be completely justified. Ultimately, Raskolnikov’s murders end up being just one big mind game and testing his abilities to see how long he can truly last before confessing his sins, which leads to Raskolnikov being singled-out by nearly every character in the novel.
The comparison of St. Petersburg and Raskolnikov’s feeble-minded brain can be considered as one in the same. St. Petersburg has all of the requirements of a city to be considered one that is in a state of depression and in a rapid declination because of the poverty, prostitution, and alcoholism (because of that famous Russian vodka). While within the city limits, Raskolnikov practically has no way of escaping the city because he himself is part of the financially-challenged list and while not being able to escape the city, he is also unable to escape his delirium he has brought upon himself. It is human nature to linger on a subject that would make one feel guilty, whether they had the best intentions or the worst intentions; the outcome is always the same. As each day went by, Raskolnikov’s guilty conscience was catching up with him and he knew it too. His one true problem, however, was that he could not think of what the outcome would be like if he confessed his crimes since many of his thoughts were more of a pessimist’s view.
Now, for more of a look at the actual crime that had been committed, since the book is called Crime and Punishment. What made the book a complete irony is that the crime was committed at the end of the first part of the book, but the punishment will not even be mentioned until the very end of the book. The death scene of Alyona, that had taken place in her room, was entirely planned out beginning with a gift of a silver cigarette case with an intricate knot to keep Alyona busy and ending with a bludgeoning smash to the head with the ax leaving her a bloody mess on the floor. Raskolnikov had the justification to go through with it and could’ve used that for his own good because he thought he had all the right intentions when killing this so-called “louse” who was taking what the poor had and made it her own with the rent. However, all his justifications were thrown out the window when Lizaveta paid an unexpected visit because Raskolnikov had foolishly forgotten to have shut the door and lock it. In a rather quickened (and panicked) fashion, he took care of Lizaveta the same way he did Alyona. This senseless murder of Lizaveta was intended to only benefit Raskolnikov’s way of not going to jail for his crime he had committed; it was null and void for any and all justifications that Raskolnikov ever had for killing Alyona.
Throughout the course of the novel, Roskalnikov must withstand the thoughts of the sins he has committed and be able to live with the guilt of them. With this guilt, comes his descent in mentality and sanity. With his thoughts on the subject matter considered to have been justified, he thinks very highly of himself and has come to believe that he is a better person than anyone else. Just because he had good intentions when he killed Alyona, doesn’t means society will look at the same way. So when Raskolnikov had come to his senses after the murders and began his guilt trip, any little thing he did that was of good intention, he made people know it and found it as another excuse to make up for his one horrible act of villainy. In fact, Raskolnikov was so insecure about the murders and that they were unsuccessful murders that he began to talk to himself while lying in bed saying, “The old woman was a mistake perhaps, but she’s not the point! The old woman was merely a sickness…I was in a hurry to step over…it wasn’t a human being I killed, it was a principle! So I killed the principle, but I didn’t step over, I stayed on this side…All I managed to do was kill. Alexander The Great was one of the greatest emperors and leaders of the world. In fact, he was the only emperor to be called, The Great. In 1 B.C. Alexander defeated the main Persian army in Masopotamia. When the Persian king, Darius, was killed by his own soldiers, Alexander declared himself king of Persia Alexander was determined to conquer the whole world.
In 7 B.C., Alexander led his armies into India. Soon after that, the Macedonians refused to go further and wanted to return to their homes and families because they had been fighting for six years. Love verses hate is one of the major themes in the play and most of the action in the play relates to one, or the other. There are many examples of love in ‘Romeo and Juliet’; Family love, love of friendship, forbidden love and sexual love. However, I will only discuss the three main kinds of love; courtly love, physical love and spiritual love, in this essay. The main importance for the variety of kinds of love is to engage the audience by changing the language and representing each kind of love with bold characters. Shakespeare adds interest to the play by interchanging scenes of different kinds of love to make the dramatic difference between them obvious.
The convection of courtly love originated in the medieval period and was recognised among the Victorian upper class. It involved intense adoration and respect by a man towards a woman who was pure or in some other way unattainable. Romeo suffers the stereotypical symptoms in Act1 Scene1. He is a courtly lover for a girl named Rosaline. Romeo feels lovesick for Rosaline but she does not return the feelings, which makes it typically courtly love. Rosaline is unattainable and refuses Romeo’s love because she has sworn never to marry,
“She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow”
His love for Rosaline may seem deep, but it is truer to say the love is artificial and lacks sincerity and passion. His behaviour involves mooning about on long walks, alone in the morning. However as dawn breaks he confides himself to the dullness of his bedroom,
“Away from light steals home my heavy son.
And private in his chamber pens himself
Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out.”
Romeo also expresses his pain by his melancholic behaviour. He is extremely depressed and shows this by his unnecessary sighing and use of oxymoron’s such as, “O heavy lightness”, “O loving hate”, “bright smoke” and “cold fire”. This is part of the typical courtly love language that the Elizabethan audience would recognise, because in that period courtly love was a common thing among the upper class. Young men thought it to be a challenge to pursue a woman who they knew would deny their love. Benvolio gives young naive Romeo the wise advice to forget Rosaline,
“Be ruled by me, forget to think of her.”
Now I will look at how Shakespeare presents the coarse view of love with the particular interest to the physical aspect of lovemaking. Shakespeare represents this more humorous kind of love through the vulgar characters of the nurse and Mercutcio. The nurse has a coarse, bawdy humour, which is shown in Act 1 Scene , when the nurse makes a certain remark about something her husband once said,
“Yea, dust thou fall upon thy face?
Thou wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit,
Wilt thou not Jule?”
He said this once when Juliet was a young girl and was referring to Juliet having sex later on in life. The audience would be entertained by the many crude references to love making which the nurse makes. In the nurse’s view, another good reason for Juliet getting married would be that she might become pregnant,
“No less; nay bigger. Women grow by men.”
This is typical for the vulgar nurse to remark upon. Even though the audience would have been enthralled by the intensity and passion of Romeo and Juliet’s true, spiritual love, they would be amused by the many crude references to physical love in the play. The nurse does not seem to understand the feelings which Romeo and Juliet have for each other and only thinks someone would marry Juliet for her family’s wealth,
“I tell you, he that can lay hold of her
Shall have the chinks.”
Mercutio, like the nurse, also can’t comprehend with their feelings of true love or courtly love because he has not experienced them himself. When Romeo is suffering courtly love for Rosaline, Mercutio is not the slightest bit sympathetic but recommends that Romeo should fight love back, and he will soon defeat it,
“If love be rough with you, be rough with love;
Prick love pricking and you beat love down.”
Mercutio adds humour to the play by making many bawdy remarks about physical love. He uses very vulgar language, especially in Act Scene1 when he is talking about lovemaking, but tries to disguise his bawdy remarks of sex by using fancy language and metaphors.
“To raise a spirit in his mistress’ circle
Of some strange nature, letting it there stand
Till she had laid it and conjured it down;”
In this speech he is pretending to talk of Romeo’s spirit but is in fact talking of sex. Mercutio is also completely insulting towards the nurse in Act Scene4, which the audience would have different views about but would all be very interested. He firstly mocks what she is wearing, and then insults her by calling her fan prettier than her face,
“for her fans the fairer face.”
He then pretends she arouses him and calls her a whore, which is unsurprising of predictable of Mercutio, who is impolite and disrespectful. In this scene the contrast between the polite Romeo and the sarcastic, vulgar Mercutio is made noticeably obvious.
When Romeo meets Juliet, he feels a completely different kind of love to which he felt for Rosaline. He has a true, spiritual connection with Juliet in contrast to the infatuation he had felt for Rosaline.
It is love at first sight for Romeo and Juliet, when Romeo sees her across the crowded room. He praises her with poetic language, which we have not yet heard from young Romeo. He uses similes to describe her beauty,
“It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear-
Beauty to rich for use, for earth to dear.”
The audience would quickly understand that Romeo is in love with Juliet and that every word he speaks in straight from the heart. He immediately realises that he did not truly love Rosaline,
“Did my heart love till now?”
“For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.”
Romeo has decided that, even without talking to Juliet, she is his true love and he does not need to search no longer.
“Forswear it, sight.”
When Romeo and Juliet first speak, their conversation is in the form of a sonnet, a love poem. Their union of minds indicating to the audience they share true, honest spiritual love. Romeo talks to Juliet pretending she is a saint and he is merely a pilgrim. She picks up on this fantasy idea using it to steal a kiss. Their linked minds having fun with words, both eager for one another showing it playfully,
“Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?
Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer”
In the famous ‘balcony’ scene we see that Romeo and Juliet’s love has a passionate sexuality, but it remains one of an honest kind.
“Sleep dwell upon there eyes, place in thy breast!
Would I were sleep and peace, so sweet to rest!”
Romeo requests that Juliet will not remain a virgin. Juliet later expresses her passionate response,
“My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee.

He is a courtly lover for a girl named Rosaline. Romeo feels lovesick for Rosaline but she does not return the feelings, which makes it typically courtly love. “She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow”

“If love be rough with you, be rough with love;
Prick love pricking and you beat love down.”
Mercutio adds humour to the play by making many bawdy remarks about physical love. He uses very vulgar language, especially in Act Scene1 when he is talking about lovemaking, but tries to disguise his bawdy remarks of sex by using fancy language and metaphors.
“To raise a spirit in his mistress’ circle
Of some strange nature, letting it there stand

There are 6 people in my family and we are African Americans. I have 4 siblings, one girl and three brothers that were born in Opelousas. When I was two years old my father left us. Growing up in Opelousas was a lot of fun. In those days it was still rather rural. My friends and I grew up playing stickball, dodge ball, and other neighborhood games.
While growing up in Opelousas, my mother passed along all she knew about the family history. I knew my family history by heart. I was told how African Americans were treated during slavery and in the society I grew up in. During the fifty’s African Americans were denied access to many businesses and were thought to be inferior beings. My family was poor; we remain this way for a long time, and face great barriers to our acceptance in a white society. Many of my family members did not speak much English because our family spoke Creole (a broken down language of French.) My mother, who raised and supported her family by doing domestic work, headed our home until her second marriage. She faced economic problems that many African Americans families faced.
We would celebrate the holidays by inviting all of our relatives over for Christmas Eve dinner. My mother would cook a huge meal. My favorite holiday memory is receiving the puppy I wanted all year. You should have seen the smile on my face! Im very happy that my family has kept the family tradition of the family gathering on Christmas Eve. I always look forward to spending that holiday with my extended family.
Our home was a happy home and was church oriented. I was raised as a Baptist and attend church regularly (Sunday School, BTU, etc.). My mother is a great spiritual influence; especially seeing her commitment to prayer and fasting impacted my family believe in God. I have old-fashioned values because of my home training as well as religious affiliations. My family believes it takes a whole village to raise a child. A- Well the setting of the film is imprtant- winter in the Nettherlands. This creates a rather remote and detatched atmosphere to the production, which is introduced with a panning shot of motionless and expressionless faces in the opening shot. The fact the produciton is in black and white also adds to this atmosphere. Interestingly, Brooke left out the opening conversation between Gloucester and Kent, begining the play with Lears lines. Satging and constuming establishes Lears intimidating authority as he sits in a throne in the centre of the room, wearing a huge woolen coat which contrasts to the comparativley simple constumes of other characters. Close-up shots that encapsulate Lears entire faced durther convey that he is the most important person in the room. An orb is also used in this prodcution which is passed around to give people permission to speak.
