Perceptions of Sex in Minot’s “Lust”


Susan Minot’s short story “Lust,” points out the extreme differences in the attitudes that men and women have concerning sexual relationships as they are portrayed through the life of the narrator. This young girl, as she attends boarding school, lives a very sexually active lifestyle. She is happy and enjoys her ways for quite some time, but her true desire is to be loved. This is a desire that will never be satisfied because she “can’t…open [her] heart” (10). The adventures the narrator experiences by means of her promiscuous lifestyle, will ultimately leave a void in her heart that, if ever, will take a lot of time, patience and heartbreaks to be filled.


The mind of the narrator, as a woman, is very different than the mind of men, as they are observed and evaluated in Minot’s “Lust.” The affection and the attention that most of these men show toward the narrator cause her to believe that they really care for her. The men know how to play this game well. They know exactly what to do to make “you do everything they want” (11). The narrator explains that their touches and kisses can be so romantic, “the only thing you can do is take that tenderness and let yourself be swept away” (10). Very seldom is any of it real though. None of these men have any respect for her as a person. The narrator learns this pretty quickly. Many of the men she has sex with, she never sees again. One of her men gives her a piece of jewelry, which he had received as a gift from an ex-girlfriend. The naïve narrator was able to overlook where it came from, accepting it and thinking that he might actually like her and see her as more than just a means of sex. In another instance a man had kissed her with breath smelling and tasting like the last meal he had. Others would grab straight for the intimate parts of her body and do as they pleased. The men just want the sex, not the girl. They have no desire yet for love or commitment. Each new girl just gives them “more stories to tell” (08) to one another.


Throughout the first half of Minot’s story, the narrator in “Lust” is perfectly content with the life she lives; she is happy and completely satisfied with her sexual relationships. Here she is, a young, vibrant girl with no parents around to set dating standards or to hardly know what she is doing at all, and no real rules or curfews to abide by. She feels as though she is having the time of her life. She loves the attention and all of the excitement that comes with her promiscuousness. “You’re not sure what to expect,” (08) because every day and every man is a new experience and a new form of excitement. The different shapes and sizes of the male anatomy she sees, as well as the places and positions she discovers with these men amaze her. A real problem she has is, “The second a boy put his arms around [her, she] forgot about wanting to do anything else” (06). Sex seemed to be on her mind just as much as it is on the minds of these typical men. This lifestyle went on and on until she began “to feel diluted, like watered-down stew” (08).

After going so long without the seriousness of her behavior even fazing her, the reality of it all hits her like a ton of bricks. She then feels herself “become…filled…with a sadness that wouldn’t stop” (06). She had been having so much fun with these men that she did not notice that things were starting to stand in the way of the path life is suppose to take. She began to develop feelings towards the men. She would become emotionally involved in addition to her normal sexual involvement. She no longer “just want[ed] to have a good time” (06). She wanted her relationships to be real and from the heart now. The narrator is ready to be loved. Unfortunately, the boys did not experience this same change of heart. She is well known to them as nothing more than a sex object for them to all share and talk about amongst one another. This is not how she wants to be looked at or treated anymore. She wants to experience the feelings of true love, not just lust. She has realized that her life is getting nowhere living the way she lives. She has finally discovered the hole that has been in her heart. She desires so badly now to have it filled, but it most likely never will. She continues to sleep around just because it is her life, it is what she is use to it and she knows it is what the men want. She worries and wonders constantly but her ways of life are all she knows. Every time she has sex she “curl[s] up like a shrimp” (10) afterwards and is filled body and soul with an overwhelming sadness.


Minot’s “Lust” shows how the mind of a woman is so much more emotional and complex than a man’s when dealing with sex and its affects. At first it can be so much fun and such a thrill, but eventually that wears off. What does a woman do then? Although the narrator loves the attention and the excitement of it all, she comes to understand the harsh reality of her life; it is going nowhere fast. The men will grow up one day and settle down, but as a woman she will carry this title and these feelings of emptiness, loneliness, and sadness in her heart forever. It would be very difficult now for any one of these men to change his perception of her. It would likewise be hard for her to open her heart completely and really fall in love with any one of them. The worst part of it all is that she must accept that she brought this all onto herself.
