INHERIT THE WIND
Growing up as children we tend to look up to characters such as Batman and Robin, who together were able to protect and serve Gotham City. Other heroes and heroines would be the people who do the little things that have major impacts on our lives such as teachers, mentors, and families. In the book Inherit the Wind, there are several different characters who have roles with the purpose of making themselves a hero or heroin. A true hero or heroin is one who is able to be in the right spot at the right time and able to help so many people at one time. I would have to say that the true hero of this book is Henry Drummond the defense attorney for Bertram Cates purely for several reasons. It appears that Drummond has a stubborn side to him when it came to choosing the jury for the trial, he is also a superior lawyer when it comes to cross-examination for witnesses, he is also one who is not bias when it comes to the views of religion and evolution, and a well spoken individual.
The first trait that will be discussed would have to be that Drummond has a stubborn side to him. There are a few examples of this trait and to start would be the scene when Drummond tells Dunlap that he has “No questions. Not acceptable.” (pg41) Then from that point Brady gets mad and tells the Judge that it is not right for there to be any questions asked to Mr. Dunlap. That is when Drummond makes the comment “How are you?” (pg41) to the witness, then excuses him. This trait can be looked at as a good trait or a bad one from some peoples point of view, but as a lawyer that is strongly disliked in this case it would be a dreadful trait. The part that sets Drummond off is when the Judge addresses Brady as Colonel Brady and Drummond rises angry and makes the comment “I object to all this damned “Colonel” talk. I am not familiar with Mr. Brandy’s military record.” (pg4) Then Drummond goes on to explain how this is not fair for his client and that he would like the Judge to change the title of Brady’s to “Private Brady”(pg4) and followed by the mayor saying that “We can’t take it back!” (pg4). Another part of the book when Drummond shows his stubborn side is when Brady is talking to Sillers and makes the statement, “What would you think if that sweet child came home from school and told you that a Godless teacher”(pg44) Drummond at this point waste no time to say “Objection! We’re supposed to be choosing jury members! The prosecution’s denouncing the defendant before the trial has even begun!”(pg44) This is a good example of a lawyer who is not going to let this bullshit go on during a trial for a mans life. These examples of Drummond clearly show how he can goes to far and pushes the limit with people.
The second trait of Drummond that will be discussed is how well he is able to cross-examine the witness during the trial. When Howard takes the stand he makes the statement “I guess that is what Mr. Darwin thought it up.”(pg71) then Drummond says “You figure anything’s wrong about that, Howard.”(pg71). Next the Judge goes on to tell Drummond “the right to think is not on trial here”(pg71) that is when the trait of how good he is at examining the witness comes out because at the point that is when he makes the statement “With all respect to the bench, I hold that the right to think is very much on trial!”(pg7) This point that Drummond just made goes to show the reader that he knows what the trial should be about and how the town and the court room think it is over a man. When Drummond cross-examines the witness he is seeking to make the jury think about everything that is being presented and that is what a good lawyer is supposed to do. The best example of cross-examination would be when Drummond called to the stand Brady to be an expert witness on the bible. At this point it becomes apparent that Drummond is doing everything that would try to open the eyes of the jury. This is an example of heroism from the stand point that Drummond is giving it his all to change the view of the court room by just the cross-examinations.
The last trait of how Drummond was good at cross-examination alone shows part of the reason of why he is the hero which leads to the next area of discussion. It is how Drummond during the trial is not bias in anyway towards religion or evolution which shows how he holds high respect towards both types of people. The first example that comes up would be when Drummond tries to bring up “Dr. Amos D. Keller who is the head of the Department of Zoology”(pg80) and Brady says “objection.” (pg80) Then a little discouraged Drummond then calls “Dr. Keller on the stand to explain to the gentlemen of the jury exactly what the evolutionary is. How can they pass judgment on it if they don’t know what it’s all about?”(pg81) These two examples show how Drummond is trying so hard to show the court both sides of the evolution and then comes maybe the best part of the book. After all the objections Drummond makes a move that most lawyers would never do and he called to the stand Brady to be the expert witness on the Bible. Drummond asks the question “in the beginning” there were only Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel, where’d this extra women spring from.”(pg0) Then he asks if it “Never bothered you” to Brady. This just shows how Drummond is not bias against religion but more so trying to make a picture for that the jury that it is ok to think about these things to get a better understanding for the truth. This also leads us into the next trait of how Drummond is such an exceptional speaker to the courtroom.
The fourth and final trait that will be looked at is how Drummond is such a great speaker both in and out of the courtroom. The key to this trait is when Drummond makes the statement,
“Then why did God plague us with the power to think? Mr. Brady, why do you deny the one faculty which lifts man above all other creatures on the earth the power of his brain to reason. What other merit have we? The elephant is larger, the horse is stronger and swifter, the butterfly more beautiful, the mosquito more prolific, even the simple sponge is more durable! Or does a sponge think.”(pg-4)
This is a good example of how Drummond shows how he can change the mood of a room and make people really think about what is going on and that is a good trait of a good speaker. Drummond goes on to ask the question “Does man have the same privileges that a sponge does?”(pg4) and the response from Brady was “Of course”(pg4). At this point it is when it is obvious that he is a good speaker simple because he now starts to roar and point to Cates and makes the announcement “This man wishes to be accorded the same privileges as a sponge! He wishes to think!”(pg4). This once again shows how Drummond is an excellent presenter because of the attitude change in him and makes the people in court think.
After reading this paper it becomes obvious that Drummond is the true hero of the book even if he did not win the case by the jury. He won the case in my view on the fact that he changed the views of the town by showing them that it is ok to think. Drummond meets the requirements of a hero because he did the little things that are going to go a long way to help this town. Like Batman and Robin save the town of Gotham it was Drummond that saved the town of Dayton from the only being about to see things one way and not really able to see or think of other things that they were not taught. Drummond is the hero just on the fact that all odds were against him the whole time and still showed the town how thinking should be viewed as a good thing and can help the townspeople in life. It is pretty obvious that Drummond is the hero based on the evidence that he is stubborn when it comes up to selecting a jury he makes it up by skillfully cross-examinations of witnesses, not being bias when it comes to religion or evolution, and finally because he is a excellent speaker.

This course taught me three marketing concepts that are key elements in the service industry. First of all, core customers must always be kept first and foremost in the mind of the marketers. It must be recognized that different segments of buyers demand different channels of distribution. Finally, it is essential to determine what specific elements produce quality in the mind of the consumer.
It is imperative for a company to never abandon the needs of its primary customers. Many times, in an attempt to bring in new customers, a company will alter its merchandise line to appeal to a different target market. However, in the meantime it may also be dissatisfying its most loyal customers. Exhibit 1 illustrates a situation in which the majority of a company’s revenue stems from one type of its stores. In this case, the company cannot afford to lose sight of its current strength and customers because of the high proportion of revenue generated from this segment.
The use of appropriate channels of distribution for specific market segments is crucial to recognize. In Exhibit , shoppers are divided into three different types of segments. Each type within the segment has a varying means of buying the company’s merchandise. If the company distinguishes the way in which that specific consumer wants to buy, the company can save in advertising costs and better appeal to that respective customer.
Finally, a company must identify what customers’ perception of quality includes and strive to improve in areas that it lacking in. Exhibit lays out five key elements to service quality. Customers’ will have varying demands for certain dimensions depending on the specific service and company. The company must work to improve its weaknesses all around, but especially in those areas where there is a sizeable gap between the quality of services being desired and the customers’ opinion of what is actually being offered. Customer satisfaction is vital to a service company because a big determining factor of its success is this intangible perception.
In conclusion, retaining core customers, choosing suitable distribution channels for different market segments, and satisfying the customers’ demands for service quality are all critical factors in services marketing.

We’re a nosy bunch, the human race. We like to gossip, and we enjoy celebrities, especially in America. Our wanton desire for the Beautiful People leads us to elevate public figures of any sort as role models and shining examples. They’re supposed to be our best, so perfect. She is the American Dream. A rags to riches story that is proof that anyone can do great things with hard work, talent and a little luck. With charisma and charm, Jennifer Lopez has been able to reach almost unparallel success in her acting, singing career and also appearance.
Jennifer’s biggest asset in typical culture is her bottom. Sadly, she has become a target of sexist, chauvinist, and racist jokes. Even in major music award shows, such as MTV Music Awards and American Music Awards the male hosts opened the event with vulgar and humiliating jokes about her body shape. VH1 also in its Pop-Up Video program, overdoes the usage of the preposition “but” to laugh at, and they would play up (further humiliate) the rising Latina pop star.
In this add, Jennifer represents the stereotype of passion, uncontrollable desire, bodily abundance, and sexual energy that characterizes people of color. Her body is turned into a spectacular object embodying the racist vision of others. In this image she is seen to be very sensual but at the same time pure. She is acting like her fragrance with her feminine curves that replicate the fragrance bottle. As a viewer I see her as fresh, clean and sexy which is what we, as consumers would feel if we bought her fragrance. How can anyone find a walking skeleton “sexy” or even healthy? I think that’s why there is such interest in the likes of Jennifer Lopez. Her curvy figure is a new phenomenon to Hollywood. People are falling over themselves to get that look. The newest thing is to get bottom implants. It’s actually called the “Jennifer look”. I’m going to let you into a secret. Shall I tell you how to get a cast iron Jennifer Lopez curvy, big bottom look? Eat a meal! She manages to muster so much sex appeal that you question whether sexiness is more about poise and less about cleavage. In our minds, she is the epitome of sex appeal, even if we havent fallen under the spell she has shown to all our males.
There are two major weapons that an advertiser can use on teenagers; the first is sex appeal. While this may also influence adults, teens are especially vulnerable. They have just gone through puberty and often have nothing on their mind but the opposite sex. One needs only to look at the recent flow of “boy bands,” bands that put together four or five good-looking, young men, to see that this is true. Bands such as N’ Sync and the Backstreet Boys have sold millions of albums, not because their music is wonderful, but because they make teenage girls go gaga.
This strategy may work even more highly on the male part of the teenage population. It has repeatedly been shown that teenage boys have raging hormones; their recent discovery of the opposite sex often makes them act like wild animals. So, one can only imagine how well the sex appeal marketing scheme would work on them.
In response to seeing an ad featuring a beautiful model, I once heard my friend say, “What’s she selling? I’ll buy it.” Needless to say, this was an exaggeration, but this marketing approach works. However, advertisers decide to use celebrities to promote their products for the same kinds of reasons. Teenagers look up to sports figures and movie stars, often wishing that they could be in their shoes. Teens see those personalities on television, living the good life and being adored by everyone. They think that if they buy the products that are being advertised by stars they too will attain that status. It may sound crazy, but it is true.

[I’m writing this letter to my friends and family because I’ve decided to let go of this life that I have been suffering from. I’m not happy with the turn of events in this life of mine. This soul that I bare is being tortured. I feel like I’m not able to breathe in this world. This soul of mine has to be at peace. Please don’t be sad by the time you finish this letter. All I ask is that you forgive me for what I have done, but I am now at peace.] This could be an example of a note one leaves when they have committed suicide. Sometimes no notes or any writings are left after a friend or a family member has taken his or her life. It leads people to wonder why they have done this. On the outside, it might look like an unnatural act, but everything in life should never be taken at face value. There is always meaning when you read between the lines. When we want to figure out a person’s suicide, we have to put ourselves in their shoes and figure out what went wrong. Maybe there was no solution to their problems. Maybe this act in life was seen as a liberating move for them. Freeing their spirit from the many issues they face. Which could be seen in The Awakening by Kate Chopin and The Outcasts of Pokers Flat by Brette Harte? The awakening of one’s spirit through suicide could be seen as a liberating act.
Suicide is the intentional killing of oneself. Suicide is view as an unnatural act in life because of how we are brought into this world. We were given life by God and when our time is over in this world, God also has that ability to take it away. We as people shouldn’t prematurely take away the life that was created for us. That’s why suicide is looked so negatively by society.

Discrimination
We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Discrimination even at the eleventh hour. Discrimination
Discrimination- “a positive or negative attitude toward an individual based on his or her membership in a religious, racial, ethnic, political, or other groups”. (Webster’s New Word Dictionary). Discrimination is still among our nation and our world today. Many people would argue this accusation, but the fact is that if discrimination was not still present then why are there laws still banning it? Discrimination can be viewed as favorable or unfavorable, depending if a certain party receives favors or opportunities, or that party is denied these favors or opportunities. Discrimination is not just among races or ethnic groups, it is among different genders, religions, preferences in partners, and different economic qualities. The people of the world today argue about discrimination all the time. Why is it still among us? Why do people still rant and rave about it? What can be done? Why don’t we just let it be? These are the questions that people ask all the time. But, in fact, none of these questions are ever solved because of the beliefs of society. Society has put discrimination into stereotyping and many other different forms, but the point is that discrimination is here to stay and most likely will never leave.
Affirmative Action is used for a diversity in the workplace or university so that discrimination can not be apart of the work environment. But, this is not the case. If discrimination was not among us than why is Affirmative Action still in play. Affirmative Action’s whole use was to get rid of discrimination but, owners of companies or schools still can find a way around the system. This is a big factor in universities today. The University of Michigan under went investigation due to the fact that they were taking less qualified students over more qualified students. But, this case was different than others. Instead of the African Americans not getting selected the white students were not getting selected. This caused a whole controversy, based on if Affirmative Action was still needed. Some people say yes it is needed and that the University of Michigan was only doing the right thing by helping out less fortunate kids. But others say no, due to the fact that if a kid is less fortunate, than that kid should work harder to get into a school of his or her choice. However, Affirmative Action is not only a controversy in the Universities but also in the workplace. In the workplace there is a great deal of evidence that shows racial and gender discrimination still are apart of the American workplace. Studies have shown that when hiring people that a black man vs. a white man or a white woman vs. a white man, that the white man will get the job 45% of the time (Donald Tamaskovic-Devy). Studies have also shown that if a white woman were to go head to head with a white male in sales that the white man would sell more than the female. Does this mean that the white man is a better sales rep than the white female? No it does not, it just means that a business man feels more comfortable buying from a white male than a white female. In Sociologist Donald Tamaskovic-Devy study of workplaces he found that 70% of the workplaces in North Carolina had coworkers of the same gender, and 56% of these workplaces had the same race. This statistic means hat Affirmative Action is not doing its job. Do we still need Affirmative Action? Based on what is happing in the world today Affirmative Action needs to be more aggressive and punish the companies that are being very discriminate.
Racial Discrimination is probably the worst discrimination that this world has ever seen. Back in the 160s when the riots took place to today when it is hard for some kids to fit in at school, racial discrimination is the most hurtful discrimination in effect. It is easy to see what racial discrimination is, just go to downtown Chicago and see how the people in the projects will act towards you if you are white. But racial discrimination is not just among the whites and blacks, it is among all of the races. Whether that be between the Hispanics, Hindus, Indians, or French, it is among us all. Racial discrimination has been around us for a very long time and at times it looks like it will never leave. Racial discrimination has brought out groups such as the KKK, Black panthers, Tailban, etc. that commit acts that are unhuman. This people give this world today a bad name. However, racial discrimination is not just among these groups it is among us at college. Here at college there is a lot of racial discrimination going on. Sometimes it is hard to see but it is here. A personal story that has happened to me is when I wet down to Mississippi Valley State to attend college. Mississippi Valley State University is located in Itta Bena, MS, two hours south of Jackson, MS. MVSU is an predominately black school, with the occasional foreign exchange student or white student. The reason why I went to MVSU is because I had received a full ride scholarship to run track and play football. When I took my visit everything seemed to be okay, and I was looking forward for the fall semester. The time finally came for me to go to college and when I arrived I was very excited. But when I met some of the kids that went there I knew that this was going to be interesting. Everything was going okay until I wanted to go and get my music out of my car. When I was walking down to my car four African Americans started to harass me about being white, and a few words were said that probably shouldn’t have been said but, this went on for about two weeks. The situation only seemed to worsen because I was scared and didn’t know what to do so, I called my dad and he told me to talk to the campus police which, didn’t do me any good. By the time talking to the campus police I decided to transfer to St. Norbert where I was supposed to come if I didn’t get the scholarship. As you can see I was harassed because I was white and at time it looked like I was going to get beat up but, luckily I never did get beat up or hurt but, millions of other people out there are not as lucky as I am. Some of the people that face racial discrimination go through it everyday, sometimes it is light and all that will happen is a few choice words. And the other times the words go into fists, and the fists are thrown, then somebody gets hurt or killed. “Racial discrimination is among us today and it will never leave. Discrimination happens for a reason, it happens because somebody is afraid of what a person might accomplish, or what that person might do, but most of the people are just plain afraid of that person’s success ( Darren Higgs)”. Dominos delivery would not even send their delivery boys into the bad parts of Washington D.C. because they were scared to venture into a place that was unknown to them. The drivers were too afraid to go into that neighborhood, and Dominos got sued for being racists(Time Magazine). Racial discrimination is one of the worst kinds of discrimination, but if people look at the color of a human beings skin, instead of the person that they really are, than we are all in for a long, long period of hatred.
Another part of discrimination that has been around for along time and is still around is sexual discrimination. Sexual discrimination is if one is refused employment, or any other work, on the ground that the job traditionally is regarded as being ‘a man’s job’ or as being ‘a woman’s job’ ( Bakesha -v- Suy 177). A lot of workers today still have a prejudice against a man, or a woman working for them, because they fell that that person cannot get the job done as good as the other person. However, other companies do not mean to discriminate it is just that the other sex, whether that be male or female, is better qualified for the job. This brings up the directness or indirectness of sexual discrimination. Indirect sexual discrimination would be a requirement which would require a justification that can or cannot be met by one sex (www.geocities.com). What this means is that if a job opening came about, the person that was hiring put a certain qualification on the job. An example of this would be if a employer required a age of 8 to get the job. But this is unlawful and discriminatory. This is what happened to a person in England and she took her case to court. The case was Price -v- Civil Service Commission in 178. This kind of discrimination is against European law’s and the court found the employer guilty of sexual discrimination. On the other hand there is direct discrimination. Direct discrimination is when a company knowingly discriminates against a person due to their gender not their qualities. This causes many problems and is strictly enforced around the country. Sexual discrimination is unlawful, and it shows people how chauvinistic we as people really are. If we want to be a great country than we need to group together one by one.
As a part of our culture, religions has tended to stir up controversy. Religious discrimination is still around due to the fact that others believe that their religion is better than another. This can go from friend to friend, family to family, or extend from a worker to his employer. We as a nation have tried to enforce against religious discrimination with bills and acts however, people somehow get around this and discriminate against each other. The Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 164 prohibits employers from discriminating against a person because of their religion or beliefs. A employer cannot fire, hire, or give benefits to a person because of his or his religious beliefs ( www.eeoc.gov). To me, religion is a big part of life. We were put here from God and we need to do as he says, we all worship him in different ways but that is how it is supposed to be. Nobody is the same in this category. Religious discrimination is not as bad as other discriminations however, it is still apart of our society.
Discrimination is still among our nation and our society today. We discriminate on people because of their color, beliefs, gender, and sexuality. How can we become a better nation if we hate our own people? How can we leave this Earth knowing that we loved and cared for every creature that was on this Earth? As put in the words of Darren Higgs “We as people need to realize that all of us are the same, despite our slight differences. We all eat, sleep, work, and provide for our loved ones. We might not look the same however, we should look into each other’s personalities to see the person that is in front of us.” Darren is right, he has gone through discrimination and he still has a loving heart. If we as a society can pull together, we can put an end to this discrimination. We are all the same people just with different looks and styles.

How does Priestley make An Inspector Calls dramatic? Consider the inspector’s revelations, how the characters react and the importance of place in the play.
In ‘An Inspector Calls’ J.B Priestly uses a wide variety of techniques to add drama and interest, this was needed to maintain the audience’s attention throughout the performance.
The first section of the text is a very long and detailed paragraph of stage directions. This sets up the performance by firstly describing the location ‘The dining room of a fairly large suburban house.’ It then continues to go into more detail about the surroundings and the atmosphere they should create. ‘The general effect is substantial and heavily comfortable, but not cosy and home like.’ This amount of detail is necessary because it is needed to reflect the lifestyle and status of the family, who are themselves explained in detail further into the stage direction.
Initially it describes each person’s appearance; Mr Birling is described as ‘heavy looking’ and Shelia is called ‘a pretty girl’. It also continues to explain their attitudes; the most important is that of Mrs Birling; ‘She is a rather cold woman and her husband’s social superior.’ This is an important point to make clear at the start of the play as it wouldn’t necessarily come across simply through the dialogue. The final statement of the direction states what is happening currently in the scene where they ‘are celebrating a special occasion’. We later find out this to be the engagement of Shelia and Gerald.
This is the most prominent example of stage directions; others mostly just state the movements of the characters. This description of setting is important because of the importance of place through out the play. All of the play is based in the dining room of the Birling’s home. It is elaborately decorated, and would be recognised by people of the time as a n upper class family. The main reason for keeping the room constant is realised when the inspector is introduced. Firstly it becomes apparent that the inspector is an intruder in the Birling’s home. They are relaxed in familiar surroundings, it is their family home where they ultimately feel secure, and when the inspector introduces himself they begin to feel on edge this is shown best by the stage directions as Mr Birling replies to the inspector
Birling (after a pause, with a touch of impatience) well, what is it then?
By keeping the set of the play constant it gives the audience the feel that the characters are trapped by the dining room walls. As they have no idea what the rest of the house is like they can only envision them in one place. This aids the play in a lot of ways, because the sets are not changing through out the audience can focus on the storyline and characters instead of always having to look at the details of set and get an understanding of the location or relevance of surroundings. Also because of the limitations in set atmosphere is built up but isn’t lost as the centre of each scene doesn’t change at all. This works for the play because in makes the tension intense.
Further through the play it becomes an interest as to when a character leaves the room. The audience becomes interested into where they have gone, if they have fled the house or contacted some one else. Also a big point of interest is if the character will come back. This hesitance adds ambiguity which is a very successful dramatic technique.
The room could be symbolic to the main theme of responsibility. The idea is that the characters are all trapped inside so they can’t escape the control of the inspector, in the same what that they all have to realise they can’t escape their responsibilities.
Arguably the most dramatic sections of ‘An Inspector Calls’ are the inspector’s individual interrogations with each character. This drama is made more intense by the sole setting of the dining room. The all witness each others downfalls, people who they had respected are picked at until they admit their own terrible secrets. As well as making everyone nervous it makes the interrogation seem even more awful to the individual as they see how accurate the inspector is.
The first person the inspector targets is Mr. Birling this is a tactical move on the inspectors behalf as he reveals Mr. Birling’s unfair treatment towards his workhouse staff appals his family. This means they lose all respect they had for him, therefore he loses his powerful role of leader over the group. But this role needs to be replaced especially as the family are in the midst of such traumatic times, and so the most dominant person takes over, in this case the inspector. This works well because the more venerable characters, particularly Shelia feel the need to be totally honest to him, making the stories more detailed and dramatic.
The inspector’s main interrogation technique could be generalised under the title of ambiguity. When he first arrives he is very vague as to why he is at the Birling’s home. ‘I’d like some information, if you don’t mind.’ Because of his confidence the family do not doubt his authenticity and continue to speak to him. The audience would realise this and be interested to find out why he has chosen the Birling’s. The most striking use of ambiguity is the way he presents a photograph to each character. At no point does he show more than one person the photograph. This leaves us with the suspicion that he could be showing photographs of totally different girls. Also the inspector could be using the two names of the girl as a way to include the whole family in the interrogation. This adds drama to the play through the use of irony; the audience have the suspicion that the inspector’s claims may be fraudulent but the characters don’t realise.
The language he uses also leaves a lot of space for the characters own interpretation. ‘I think you remember Eva Smith now don’t you Mr. Birling?’ Their responses are then tailored to what they believe the inspector to be interested in. This shows the audience how much guilt they are feeling, as before their answers would be carefully thought out. He also persuades the characters to admit by urging them on ‘Go on.’ this gives them the impression that he is hearing the response he expected and wants them to continue so they reveal more detail, only shocking their family members and the audience rather than the inspector. Also a lot of the descriptions the inspector gives the language is very melodramatic ‘a young woman drank some disinfectant and died, after several hours of agony.’ This is a very graphic description for a police officer to give, but the idea is to provoke an instant reaction of shock without having to reveal too much description so as not to let out his plan of action. This also makes powerful images in the midst of the audience it give an instant interest into how the family are connected to such a shocking incident. Along with this use of melodramatic language rhetorical questions are used regularly amidst his questionings. When he is speaking to Gerald about his involvement he quickly adds ‘well, we know one young woman who wasn’t, don’t we.’ As well as comparing the dead Eva Smith to Gerald’s sister the inspector also catches him out, giving him no chance for a response. This gives the audience an example of the atmosphere in the room, making the tension and so also the drama increase.
The whole play is based on a moral, of responsibility. After the audience has realised that the Inspector may not be all he claims they consider why he has visited the Birling’s. It seems as if his aim is to make them realise the fact that they have responsibility for people other than themselves. We also realise that it’s necessary for the younger generation, in this case Shelia and Eric to change the way they act, before they become set in their ways, the extreme version of this shown through Mr. Birling.
This moral is shown mainly through a comparison of reactions to the inspector. Mr. Birling is determined to believe that he has done no wrong, and that his social status means he should not need to worry. He try’s to pass off responsibility by refusing to focus on the situation, but instead making general comments;
‘Still I can’t accept any responsibility. If we were all responsible for everything that happened to everybody we’d had anything to do with, it would be very awkward, wouldn’t it?’
This attitude makes the audience dislike Mr. Birling because his view seems to be instantly at fault. This character works well because his attitude seems to be worsened by the fact that there are family members who realise their own, and everyone else’s mistakes. Shelia is the prime example of this, she is instantly worried about her families connection to the death of Eva Smith ‘Sorry! It’s just that I can’t help thinking about this girl- destroying herself so horribly and I’ve been so happy tonight.’ And when she is told she herself has connections with Eva she is even more concerned; ‘I’ve told my father he didn’t seem to think it amounted to much but I felt rotten about it at the time and now I feel a lot worse. Did it make much difference to her?’
After the whole family have been subject to questioning they all start to deal out the blame. This is when we really see the characters who do not want to accept responsibility, such as Mr Birling. He tells Eric it is his fault, ‘You don’t seem to care about anything. But I was almost certain for a knighthood in the next honours list.’ Mrs Birling only defends her husband ‘I should think not. Eric, I’m absolutely ashamed of you.’ The comparison of views is used again, the strong views of Mr and Mrs Birling make Sheila and Eric’s opinions seem even more accurate. Eric is clear to understand the importance of what has happened. ‘I say the girls dead and we all helped to kill her and that’s what matters.’ The audience realise that this is the right attitude to have so instantly side with Eric, making Birling’s fit of rage seem even more arrogant to the audience.
It could be viewed that restricting the play to one room affects it dramatically. This could be because of the loss of interest in the surroundings through the play, as there is no contrast to keep the audience engaged. But in my opinion this works for the play because you begin to become accustomed to the surroundings and begin to focus on the action in the play instead. The characters work well together as a whole as there is a variety of characters. This enables the audience to view contrasts between their reactions to their own and each others secrets.
Over all I think the play is successfully dramatic because of the wide use of techniques priestly uses. It is important to keep the audiences attention throughout the whole duration of the play and this is done by the use of language and an intriguing plot. Drama is introduced by involving irony and ambiguity along with twits and turns in the plot. As a text it could be viewed as over the top, but it must be realised that it is planned for the stage and so needs the ambiance and environment of the theatre.

We also realise that it’s necessary for the younger generation, in this case Shelia and Eric to change the way they act, before they become set in their ways, the extreme version of this shown through Mr. Birling.
This moral is shown mainly through a comparison of reactions to the inspector. Mr. Birling is determined to believe that he has done no wrong, and that his social status means he should not need to worry. He try’s to pass off responsibility by refusing to focus on the situation, but instead making general comments;

Strategic HRM in TCL
The 4th Largest Electronic Co. in China
TCL Corporation is a comprehensive, large-scale state- owned enterprise, established in 181. In. years, TCL has grown from a small audio cassette factory to an enterprise with annual sales in excess of RMB 0 billion. TCL is well known in China and abroad and has developed in many areas such as multimedia electronics, home electronics appliances, telecommunication equipment, information components, and electronics components. Moreover, TCL has undergone a period of substantial progress, and is one of the fastest-growing major industry manufactures, having racked up a compound annual growth rate of 47 % in the past decade. Today, it leads in all the four key industries. As a whole, TCL is ranked fourth in a rating China¡¦s 100 prestigious Electronics & IT enterprises and TCL brand value in 00 reached RMB18.76 billion. In 00, the TCL Group had total sales of RMB 1.billion and export revenues came to US $1.16 billion. TCL also generated a profit of RMB 1.5 billion in 00, and paid RMB1. billion in taxes.
TCL has formed its own core market concept and management mechanism by initiating new market initiatives, such as ¡§well-planned market promotion¡¨, ¡§hard-working¡¨, ¡§thousand-shop project¡¨, and ¡§service-based marketing¡¨. Through 10-year¡¦s non-stop efforts and taking the leading position in the market, TCL with 10000 professional distribution staff- who have established an extensive nationwide sales and distribution network with a computerization progress that reaches across the whole country incorporating over 0 branches, and has set up overseas sales offices or business representative offices over 10 countries. TCL is currently expanding it¡¦s brand colour TV operations in Vietnam , India and Germany and this speeds up exploration of overseas market and consolidates its corporate development,. TCL is extending his presence in multimedia TV, telecommunication , information and electric components fields. From 16, TCL successively acquired Hong Kong Luk¡¦s Enterprise in the colour television project, Henan Meile Electronics Inc, Mongolia Caihong TV Co., WuXi Yonggu TV Co., and Zhongshan Suohua air-conditioner factory which further developed and expanded TCL product scale. The objective of TCL is to become a world-class enterprise in the context of a global economy in future 10 years.
TCL corporate philosophy is to ¡§provide value for customers, opportunities for employees and benefits for society¡¨, and the enterprise principles are ¡§dedication, sincerity, teamwork, and innovation¡¨. With ¡§developing the best product, providing the best service and creating the best brand name¡¨ as the company¡¦s competition strategy, 40000 TCL people will well position for ¡§innovation & Technology¡¨ and persevere in constructing and creating management system.
How TCL grew into a big corporation from a small unit? This did not happen easily. Looking into its history and its leader, we can see its success have been woven with lots of strategic thoughts and practice. I can say that TCL is a good example to apply HRM well in reality.
What is HRM?
HRM started from 160 and from 170s and 180s, it became increasingly apparent. While UK and US¡¥s industry were failing to compete effectively at an international level, Japanese manufacturers started to penetrate the market. HRM started to cause more and more concern in the worldwide sense. Let¡¦s see how Human resource management (HRM)¡¦s definition. It is described by Beret Al (184)
Human resource management involves all management decisions and actions that affect the relationship between the organization and employees-its human resources.
A further definition is provided by Pettigrew and Whipp (11) who suggest that
HRM relates to the total set of knowledge, skills and attitudes that firms need to compete. It involves concern for and action in the management of people, including selection, training and development, employee relations and compensation. Such actions may be bound together by the creation of an HRM philosophy.
The definition was divided into by Story (187), one is ¡§hard¡¨, and another is called ¡§soft¡¨. Let¡¦s see any difference between them. It will help us understand HRM more.
The ¡§hard¡¨ version emphasized the ¡§quantitative, calculative and business strategic aspects of managing the head count resource in as ¡§natural¡¨ a way as for any other economic factor¡¨. Thus, employees are treated as just another part of the input-output equation. Hard HRM strategies are concerned with improving employee utilization (the cost effective approach) and getting them to accept that their interests coincide with those of the organization (the unitary approach). Re-sourcing strategies and practices will aim to recruit and develop employees who ¡§fit¡¨ the organization¡¦s culture. A hard HRM industrial relations strategy will develop direct links with individuals and groups of workers, and may bypass the trade unions and their representatives. In this extreme version, hard HRM will deliberately aim to marginalize trade unions (or do without them altogether). Employees will be involved in the improvement of quality and productivity, but are unlikely to participate in business decision making. This ¡§hard¡¨ version therefore stresses the management aspect of HRM.
The ¡§soft¡¨ version emphasizes communication, motivation and leader-ship. It is concerned with developing what Handy (18) call a ¡§culture of consent¡¨ and recognizes that employees cannot be treated just like any of the other resources because, unlike them, people feel and react. There is more emphasis on strategies for gaining commitment by informing employees about the company¡¦s mission, values, plan and trading conditions, involving them in how work should be organized, and grouping them in self-managing teams, A pluralist view is taken which recognizes that the needs of employees will not always coincide with those of the organization, and care is taken to balance the respective needs, so far as this possible. If there are unions, it is recognized that they have a part to play in representing the collective interests of employees, but the company maintains it s right to communicate directly to individuals.
The ¡§soft¡¨ HRM is broadly accepted and practice. And this led to a ¡§map of HRM territory¡¨, the core of which Beer et al. refer to as the ¡§four C¡¦s¡¨
„X Competence of employees
„X Commitment of employees
„X Congruence between the goals of employees and those of the organization.
„X Cost effectiveness of HRM practices.
A summary of these factors gives a good flavour of what this approach entails.
„X High commitment means that employees will be motivated to ¡§hear, understand, and respond¡¨ to management¡¦s communications relating to the organization of work. The resulting mutual trust enables managements message to be more believable to employees and to enable management to be responsive to employee¡¦s legitimate concerns as stakeholders¡¨ (Beer et al. 1846)
„X High competence creates a positive attitude towards learning and development and , thereby, gives employees the ¡§versatility in skills and the perspective to take one new roles and jobs as needed¡¨ (p.6)
„X Cost effectiveness ¡§means that the organization¡¦s human resource costs-wages, benefits and indirect costs such as strikes, turnover, and grievances have been kept equal or less than competitors¡¨¡K only a continual process of mutual influence about the realities of the business and the needs of employees can bring about this outcome¡¨(p.6)
„X Higher congruence is a reflection of polices and practices which bring about a higher coincidence of interests among management, shareholders and workers¡¨ (p.6) a situation encouraged by forms of employee influence which, in turn, reduce adversarial relations.
We should not overlook the philosophy of the HRM .Lets see how the influential Harvard School, as represented by Beer and Spector (185), express its philosophy
We believe that a set of basic assumptions can be identified that underlie the policies that we have over served to be part of the HRM transformation. The new assumptions are
Proactive system-wide interventions, with emphasis on fit, linking HRM with strategic planning and cultural change;
„ People are social capital capable of development;
„ Coincidence of interest between stakeholders can be developed;
„ Power equalization is sought for trust and collaboration;
„ Open channels of communication to build trust and commitment
„ Goal orientation; Participation and informed choice
Upon this philosophy, they treat employees as valued assets, emphasize on commitment rather than on compliance and value strategy and culture.
The aim of HRM will let us know better how to use HRM properly in an organization. The aim of HRM is
o To enable management to achieve organization objectives through its workforce
o To utilize people to their full capacity and potential;
o To foster commitment from individuals to the success of the company through a quality orientation in their performance and that of the whole organization(Guest 187);
o To integrate human resource policies with business plans and reinforce an appropriate culture or , as necessary, reshape an inappropriate culture;
o To develop a coherent set of personnel and employment policies which jointly reinforce the organization¡¦s strategies for matching resources to business needs and improving performance;
o To establish an environment in which the latent creativity and energy of employees will be unleashed;
o To create conditions in which innovation, team working and total quality can flourish.
o To encourage willingness to operate flexibly in the interests of the adaptive organization and the pursuit of excellence.
There is the nature of the linkage between HRM and business strategy . Only these two ¡¥s integration will have the deep effect in a big corporation. The following formulation will help us to understand it much thoroughly
External Environment & Internal Environment
Strategic Formulation
The organization¡¦s vision, mission and values convey to employees answers to questions such as Where are we going? Why are we going there? And how will we get there? The answers to these questions are of major importance when managing human resources. Consequently, the HR leader and staff need to be involved in the creation, maintenance and revision of the organizational vision, mission, values and general strategy. HR professionals help ensure that other managers behave in ways that are consistent with the corporate vision, mission and values. They also can facilitate their inclusion in the in definition and articulation of the strategic business issues and objectives
TCL is the example of practising the soft model HRM and they know that it is easy to say to produce the first-class world products but in reality there are so many strategies and so much various effort have to put it to materialize the goal - just as we build up a building not only with the blueprint and it needs the concrete, water, bricks ... In order to reach the goal ,the chairman MR. Li led the delegation several times to Japan, America , Europe many countries to gain others countries experience and the strategies . TCL consulted the foreign consultancy companies and experts to diagnose their company. Soon after they have got the ideas, they formed the group of experts and professors of all over the country to study how to put strategic HRM into practice and let it align with their objectives, The following strategies are part of TCL¡¦ s practice
To Build Employee Capabilities,
Competency Identification and Development
TCL recognizes the importance of developing employee competence in support of its values and the achievement of its strategies. HR has facilitated the development of a competency method for TCL top leadership which is fully supported by the senior management team and is actively used in recruitment, selection, development and performance. They set a booth in the human resource market in Guangzhou to recruit the staff according to what they need such as the graduates from university, excellent engineers from north and overseas MBA students with the new ideas and new styles. They put them in the training course for three month and let them understand the company¡¦s strategy and the process of procedures after they have been accepted. They set up an activity called ¡§To be TCL people¡¨ and let the employees feel proud of working in TCL.
TCL believes that participation decision-making is a crucial ingredient in the process of facilitating ¡§ownership¡¨ among employees provides the company with a potential source of competitive advantage and heightens the quality of decision-making. TCL gives its employee-owners significant information about the ongoing financial condition of the business .They published they own newspaper in which were financial report, latest news and the development of the company.
To Build Employee Commitment,
The vision for Corporate Community
The leader of TCL often uses the Chinese old saying that the water can carry the boat but it also can capsize the boat. He refers the water is the employees and the boat is the company. So the quality of the employees is very crucial to the success of the company. To build up the employee¡¦s loyalty and commitment to the company is the must way to retain the quality of the company. Whether HR functions well or not can be shown here. Their newspaper has one column especially for the feedback from the employees and the company encourages the free speech and the leader has a direct hot-line for the employees once a week. TCL¡¦s core values are
Making a meaningful contribution to our customers
Cultivating community, participation and people development
Creating economic value for investors and employee-owners
Responding to chance through design and innovation
Living with integrity and respecting the environment
Most of the employees are well educated and very talented and they have the strong competitive competence. It is a big issue how to let these elites to settle down in TCL to create value. To solve this problem, the TCL leaders have had several discussion meetings and set of the standards to retain the elite to serve the company¡¦s goal. TCL has built up lines of buildings and offered the new comers a set of apartment, an attractive remuneration, and practice the gain-sharing bonuses scheme giving the company share according to the different position and the years they are serving in the company. If the new comer comes from the North, he/she will be allowed their family come to live together in the same year. And these did not always happen in the big cities in china at that time because there are limit quotas to let other provinces people to enter the different city.
TCL have used their economic power to influence the government officers to uplift the limit for them and overcome this problem as to make the staff feel much secured, from here we can see that the top managers in TCL treated employees as a great value as TCL believes that every effort they have made will help to increase the sense of ownership among employees.
For TCL, these core values lead ineluctably to the conclusion that employee¡¦s ownership is crucial to the success of the firm. Employee ownership, in turn, requires significant levels of employee participation. Within this context, TCL has developed a management style and structure that excels at building employee-owner commitment and cooperation. And in treating the employees with respect, dignity and as a value resource. They use TCL uniform strengthen the employees¡¦ sense of belonging.
Improving the Professional Capability of HR
Fundamentals of HR infrastructure
TCL has also done a good job of deploying ¡§HR fundamentals¡¨ to employees. For example when recruiting, selecting and promoting employees, they looks for technical as well as non technological skills - the ability to work in teams, business acumen, initiative, leadership and conflict resolution skills. They take the external ability into consideration because they believe that it would be difficult to fit into the culture at TCL without those attributes.
To facilitate the selection process, TCL has developed a competency-based selection process based on 1) determining competencies necessary for success in a position, ) producing interview questions focusing on those competences, ) conducting behaviourally-based interviews, 4) evaluating candidate response and 5) making an integrated hiring decision. New employees are selected by the people from HR and from the area for which the candidate is being interviewed. Once a hiring decision has been made, a New Employee Orientation program and a series of related tools help acculturate new employees to TCL¡¦s mission, vision and values and integrate them into TCL¡¦s organization.
Conclusions
Through the practice of Strategic HRM in TCL, they have achieved the position of the 4th Largest electronic Co. in China. We can tell from the above analysis that TCL has successfully deployed Strategic HRM. Their way to success is the way they treat the employees as values which is totally different from the traditional working relationship in China . It has made itself famous for it¡¦s innovation in it¡¦s relationships with employees
.
Most of Chinese government owned companies¡¦ leaders have the remote relationship with the employees because they think that only keeping a solemn face can keep their dignity and authority so they promote the employees to the managers¡¦ position not depending on their competence but decided upon their good relationship with them and protect the leader¡¦s own benefits. They don¡¦t care the benefit of the company because they are promoted or not according the relationship with the top leader. This bureaucracy is a very big problem in China. Fortunately, it is gradually diminishing through the government¡¦s innovation. TCL experienced many difficulties in practising Strategic HRM during the 180s in China which was filled with the feudal hierarchical thought at that time . TCL felt confident in practicing strategic HRM. Today TCL feel very proud that their line managers have a strong education background, which is of great benefit to TCL and their staff have strong sense of belonging to TCL which creates a great value to TCL.
When asked about the critical success factors in TCL, the Chairman Mr.Wu DongSheng answered, ¡§there were three of them, one is the innovation to increase the competition of our company, the second is to populate professional education of employees and improve the employees¡¦ competence, the third is to treat them with dignity and proper remuneration and build up their sense of commitment.¡¨ From here we can see that TCL believes that its future success depends largely on the employees who serve the customers. Treating staff reasonably and involving them in the business, and they are more likely to be confident in themselves so their work will give the customers a better service. As satisfied customers will lead to a more successful and thriving business, thus completing the virtuous circle of potential business and individual success.
Through the practice of Strategic HRM, TCL has consolidated its foothold in national market and become much confident in opening up the new market in the world. In September of 00, they successfully took over Snild electronic Co.¡¦s brand in Germany and they used the Snild ¡¥s brand and some fixed assets to establish a Snild Electronic Co., This year in IFA (Berlin), they have signed the sales contract over 0 million (EURO$). With all the success, TCL believes that Strategic HRM has helped it becoming a successful international Electronic CO. and they hope that more and more countries use their products and their service. Strategic HRM is the proof of TCL¡¥s success.
Recommendations
Of course, no matter how nicely HR functions well in TCL. There are still some improvements in TCL. One aspect should be
Feedback.
The feedback in TCL was not sufficient and should be in various ways and sources 1) e.g. supervisors, direct reports, co-workers, customers. It can be also through ¡§informal discussions and surveys, aptitude tests, and performance appraisals¡¨ . ) Further they should have the questionnaires boxes set in every department which encourages and help the open speech. ) Setting up a department to specially deal with the feedback is an important step.
The reason is because TCL only uses the general manager¡¦s hotline once a week. Obviously it is not enough to solve the problem in the company in such big scale. The feedback is as a mirror to a company and it is too important to ignore. As for the general manager is always busy visiting different countries and different regions and setting up the general manager¡¦s sole hotline sounds very good but actually it is not practical. Especially in China some times the line managers can be very dominant and they will abuse their power too much which silences the employees and influence the top managers know the true feelings of the employees. There are no clear rules to monitor and discipline the line managers. This is the deterrent for the development of the company. Setting up proper feedback and monitoring system will facilitate the working relationship and create a healthy communicative atmosphere, which will improve the employee¡¦s loyalty and commitment.
Employee¡¦s improvements.
In order to sustain and improve the employees¡¦ and line managers¡¦ skill and knowledge, a Personal Development Plan (helped with a coach) will be useful. Six Items are addressed as follows
„ Development areas (What do I need to develop?)
„ Development activities (What will I do?)
„ Support (Who will help me?)
„ Progress and review (When and how will I check my progress?),
„ Application (How will my development impact my job?),
„ Measures (How do I measure my progress?)
This method will help enhance the whole employees¡¦ level and form the spirit of continuous learning, therefore it will help to improve the customer¡¦s satisfaction and reach the company¡¦s goal. If a company is to place commitment at the hearts of its people strategy then there must be a fundamental change to support, reinforce, and value these activities-with reward of managers, through the provision of training to create higher skill levels within the company, and by balancing organizational demands for delivery of the ¡§hard¡¨ financial results with the delivery of the ¡§soft¡¨ people aspects.

Accounting is the information system that measures business activities, processes that information into reports, and communicates the results to decision makers. Accounting is often called the language of business(Horngren, 1). Within the language of business ethical behaviors are and should be monitored. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) monitors the accounting professionals. These accounting professionals hold positions such as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Institute of Management Accountant (IMA), Certified Public Accountants, and Certified Management Accountants. The Values added Rules and values in ethical decision making article discusses four steps to ethical decision making of which will be discussed in its entirety later on in the paper. The article demonstrates through the process of ethical accounting rules this could help the employee and the organization. In the event that it does not help the employee, Verschoor suggest resigning from the company.
Ethics is the moral standard that guides professional decisions. Some of the problems that companies face are employees that do not follow set guidelines that have been incorporated in the company. In addition to enforcing ethics there are four steps that companies should follow to reinforce company ethics.
· Identify the facts and the issues
1. Who will be affected by (who are the stakeholders of) my decisions?
. What will be the short and the long-term consequences of possible courses of action?
· Identify applicable values
1. How possible courses of action impact potential stakeholders?
. What considerations should I have with regard to
· The rights of stakeholders
· Justice among stake holders
· The short and long-term balance of good among stakeholders
· Stakeholders to whom I am justifiably partial?
· My gut feeling about what is the right thing?
· What I think those whom I respect for their virtue would judge to be the right thing
· Seek Help if needed
1. Which course of action might keep me awake at night
. Can my supervisor or the Human Resources department provide guidance
· Reach the best decision based on the available information
1. Is my decision legal and within the organization policy
. Do organizational values and my personal values support my decision? (Verschoor, 000)
I am the accounting payroll clerk for my job and there is also peer that handles the expenses part of accounting of which is scrutinized very carefully. The accounting department has to handle all matters as fragile as possible because none of the engineers are on site. Therefore we have to check and then recheck and then check again to make sure all documentations are correct. We exercise the four above mentioned steps primarily to make sure all monies are being distributed properly. I believe this policy should be updated, reviewed every six months so that no fraudulency will never slip through the cracks. For instance let’s take the submitting of a time sheet, in order for the employee to get their proper pay per every two weeks, they have to list the hours worked, the job number for the hours worked the project number that is attached to the job number along with their signature, the clients signature and the company. By doing this it will ensure that there is no fraudulent timesheets being paid. Although, there was one employee caught behaving unethically. He turned the same timesheet that he was paid for two months prior but just changed the date, but because I keep record of all time sheets I was able to identify the duplicate timesheet immediately. Fortunately he was not awarded the money because of the misappropriate behavior and the company was saved from theft.
Although the above mention ethical steps are appropriate for companies to incorporate some employees will still behave unethically. Basically employees will ultimately do what the hearts desire, I am sure some companies are more lenient than others when it involves ethics. On the contrary when it comes to behaving unethically in the area in accounting I believe companies should be very strict; because proper accounting coupled with following company ethics is the adhesive that helps companies stay in business. Accounting ethics are very important, not only will it save the company money but also the employee’s jobs.

Clueless is a fantastic contemporary text based on the early 1800s version of Emma by Jane Austen. The two texts have many similarities that prove the adaptation, but have both been changed in order to reflect the new values inherent by their different cultural contexts.
Clueless uses many similar characters and the same basic storyline to retell the classic. However, there is one major difference between the two taxts. Many critiques have stated that Austens Emma was a feminist text, that reflected the views of only a minority at that point in time. Clueless is believed to be quite the opposite.
Said to be modern and true-to-life, Clueless tells the story of a naive girl, who believes that her popularity and place in society will get her cleanly through life. Viewers are shocked at the major differences between the texts, and the ways in which society has evolved. They are awed at how far society has come. I laugh in the face of these mislead imbosils. In fact, Clueless forces women to take a step backwards! The film concludes with Dionnne, Cher and Tai (along with other females) fighting for the bouquet and Miss Geists wedding. These girls hurry to the fight when told that they may miss the throwing, hence proving the olden day belief that women need men to complete their lives. If this film truly reflected the contemporary liberated woman, it would conclude with Cher coming to terms with her faults, but working on them to live a gratifying life as a single woman of the world.
Although the varying media forces viewers to respond to the texts differently, the same message is still brought through... women always have, and always will need men!
Clueless is an excellent transformation of Austens classic Emma as it sucessfully adapts the same values, ideals and themes of the earlier cultural context (although, without taking into mind, the way in which society has changed.)

My parents got divorced when I was in elventh grade. My brothers were fourteen and eleven and I was sixteen. Even though the mess ended two years ago, it was long before then that I began. On the day of my fourteenth birthday, my parents announced their divorce. They sat us all in the family room and said we needed to talk. I had a million things running through my head, since two days before this my mom announced she had breast cancer. Was she going to die? Have surgery? Or were we just going to get in trouble for not cleaning our rooms? Whatever it was was important because my brothers were called home from their friend’s houses. As I sat on the chair waiting for my brothers, I could hear my parents whispering in the kitchen, until Tommy and Nicholas came storming through the door mad about their interrupted playtime. The boys, Johnny being only twelve and Nicholas only nine sat in front of the television and turned on cartoons. My dad quickly turned it off and the boys came and sat by me on the chair. My parents, on separate couches, began to say something but I could tell they were lacking the words to say it. After a few incomplete sentences, my parents began to argue and my dad asked if we wanted to go to McDonalds. We all confused but excitedly, piled into the van and my mom left for work. We pulled out of our sub and quickly into the church across the street. The parking lot was completely empty and my dad pulled into a spot somewhere in the middle. He pulled a large manila envelope out from his briefcase and simply said that him and my mom were getting a divorce. Tommy immediately started to cry, and we drove back home without any McDonalds.
At home, that day was not the same. I think Nicholas was too little to understand,
and I didn’t really care. My parents have fought for almost all of my life and it really did not mean anything to me yet. Tommy on the other hand was miserable. He knew what
the word divorce meant, and he did not like it in the least. Mom and dad not living together, switching houses every week and a lot more arguing. He took it the hardest out of all of us, but I have to say that the two years following were the hardest years of my life. My parents, without a reasonable explanation, still lived together. My mom eventually moved her bedroom to the den and it stayed that way until September of 001 when the divorce was finalized and we moved out.
Even though we only moved a mile and a half away, at least it was next door. The custody arrangement required that we switch houses every Friday. At first I thought it was cool, because just like every other family in Shelby Township, ours was divorced too. However now I have realized that it is a huge pain to move my things back and forth from house to house every weekend. Even though I hated moving I love where we moved and still do. I am the happiest now than I have been in the past four years. Not because of my living situation, but because of my boyfriend of two years that lives across the street from me, and all of my close friends. Neither of my houses, I consider, a loving environment and I know now that as soon as I walk out the door I am in one. My friends and boyfriend support all the time and the love me because they want to, not because they have to.
The love from my boyfriend Dan and my friends has kept me going for the last couple years. For these reasons my life has been forever changed. I hope it continues to stay this way for a long time to come and maybe even get better. This has been an event to remember for a lifetime, because of the great learning experience it has been.

‘A text can show that adversity makes people care more for themselves than for others.’ To what extent is this statement true for the novel?
Selfishness is a common trait amongst mankind whether outwardly visible or not. Appearances can be deceiving; even the most seemingly selfless people often act as they do solely for personal gain, albeit if only for the satisfaction of helping someone out. Sometimes I speculate over the source of this; is it merely human nature or does our natural instinct for survival manifest itself through adversity? In the novel ‘That Eye, the Sky’ Tim Winton expresses his opinion on the subject. However as those who ponder over the matter soon discover, there is no simple black or white answer. Consequently I can only comment on the extent to which the statement ‘adversity makes people care more for themselves than for others’ applies to the novel.
Tegwyn’s actions are extremely selfish and her disregard for everyone but herself is obvious throughout the novel. Although it was never stated, Tim Winton implies that her rough, angry manner was born from pain produced by insecurity. As a result, the reader often responds to her sympathetically despite her behaviour. In herself she is not a bad person and this is shown through lapses in her brutal conduct. For example when she gathers flowers and arranges them over Sam we see a softer, loving side of her. Tegwyn is a simmering cauldron of conflicting and consequently damaging emotions even before her father’s accident. It appears to me that the hardship that followed was not the cause of her selfishness, but rather, the event that made the cauldron erupt and spill over. In Sam’s absence the family needed her so in her failure to help, her self-centredness became apparent. Therefore, the answer we are seeking lies in her behaviour preceding the accident.
As previously discussed, Tegwyn’s insecurity seems to be the source of her selfishness. Taking this into account, the real question is whether or not insecurity is an adversity. In my opinion insecurity in itself is not an adversity although, subsequent events may result in hardship. Hence insecurity inadvertently leads to adversity per se. Accordingly, Tim Winton seems to concur with the statement in this discussion. However if we look instead at Ort, we see a different view. Very rarely throughout the book do we see Ort doing anything that diverges with the desires of anyone else. He seems to be content with conceding to others’ wishes. The few exceptions are caused by ignorance or choosing between two conflicting sides. For example when he fights with Fat he decides to defend his family, thus following their wishes.
It is possible to argue that Ort is so compliant because he is a pacifist and simply wants to keep the peace. That would mean that his behaviour is for his own benefit and comfort rather than that of others. However what action is not based on a person’s own desire? Even a person who donates money to charity does so of their own freewill for the gratifying feeling of generosity or usefulness that it brings. Look at Henry for example. He came to the Flack family with an offer of aid and for a time, he did indeed help them. His value is acknowledged when Ort comments on how difficult it is to move Sam without Henry’s assistance when he is away or ill. Nevertheless Winton implied that Henry served them in an attempt at redemption to relieve him from the guilt of his prior actions, and thus, for his own sake. This is made obvious when he says to Sam “…I want to heal you, Sam Flack. You will save me, Sam. Your healing will heal me…” The fact that everyone exercises this form of self-gratification dilutes the argument thus, causing us to discount it as invalid.
Another argument is that Ort is not quite ‘right’ in the head and thus we cannot include him in our reasoning. To counter this we will simply introduce another character for consideration Alice.
Alice can be described as honest, blunt, determined and perhaps a little dull. Her family (of which she is fiercely protective) is her highest priority. Sam’s unfortunate accident is a catalyst that threatens to tear her family apart. Winton makes it clear that she feels hopeless. An illustration of this is when she gets extremely angry at Henry and says “…Are you gunna fix him up? What right have you got?” as it is uncharacteristic of her to have a short temper and thus, shows her immense distress. However she struggles on despite the difficulty. Her love seems to be unconditional as only a parent’s can be especially in regard to Tegwyn. For example when they are in the middle of an argument she gives her a hug and tells her that she loves her. Alice pours herself entirely into her family. In this matter the hardship has no effect except perhaps to enhance her efforts. However in her attempt to hold her family together, the opportunity to help those outside it is disintegrated and those she viewed as detrimental to her family’s well being were attacked without any attempt at understanding (eg The Cherry family). Therefore the statement is true to some measure concerning Alice.
There are many other characters to take into account however I believe we have covered a sufficient range to form a decision. Considering all aspects, it is impossible to come to any conclusive judgment but by eliminating some arguments, we have managed to reach a more decisive answer. Over this deliberation we have discovered that to some extent the statement does apply to the novel. Yet, the interpretation of the degree of its accuracy varies for each individual, as we are just that individual and thus, unique in our responses.

CHAPTERS 4 & 44
Pip decides to visit Estella one last time before going into hiding with Magwitch, the convict. He finds a man named Drummle at the Blue Boar and the two argue over Estella. (p.81) Drummle says the two have being seeing each other. Pip goes to Satis House to deal with Miss Havisham, telling her he has discovered the identity of his real benefactor. Miss Havisham is unsympathetic; saying she never had to let him know it was not her who was supporting him. He then turns to Estella and confesses his love for her saying “I know. I have no hope of ever calling you mine, Estella…Still I love you. I have loved you since I first saw you in this house.” She tells him she is marrying Drummle. Pip tries to discourage her, begging her not to let Miss Havisham ruin her life. Estella is stubborn; she says she wants to marry Drummle. Although Pip is broken-hearted he learns the truth and this is important to him.
CHAPTER 4
In this chapter things are set right with Miss Havisham when she agrees to give financial help to Herbert by Pips request. She seems much kinder, and she wants Pips forgiveness for all she has done to him and she wants to show him she is not a heartless old woman. Pip goes for a walk to organize his thoughts. When he returns, he sees Miss Havisham in her wedding dress go up in a blaze. Pip rushes to save her, and she again asks him to forgive her. A doctor arrives and says that although she has been badly burnt, the terrible shock is the greatest danger to her life. Pip is burnt too, and he forgivingly kisses the old lady good-bye “though every vestige of her dress was, burnt as they told me, she still had something of her ghastly bridal appearance” Then Pip leaves and goes to look for Herbert. (p.0)
CHAPTERS 55-57
After Pips escape plan failed Magwitch is sentenced to death, but he will probably die from the damage a man named Compeyson gave him in the water. Pip visits Magwitch on his deathbed and tells him about Estella. Pip tells him how beautiful she is and how much he has loved her. Magwitch dies with happy thoughts on his mind.
Magwitch’s death depresses Pip. He is also heavily indebted and has no money. He becomes very ill, and he is too sick to even move. Joe arrives to help, by caring for him until he is healthy and paying his debts so Pip will not go to prison. Joe tells Pip about Miss Havishams death and her wealth, which she left to Estella and to Matthew Pocket. He also tells Pip it is not important to bring up the past. Pip says to Joe “I am thankful that I have been ill” probably because it made their friendship stronger. But Pip is surprised to see that one morning he awakens to find Joe has gone. A note left behind tells Pip that Joe thinks he is not good enough for Pip, who will be able to start his life once again. Pip decides to sell his property and make things right with Joe. He plans to return to his childhood home and has dreams of marrying Biddy. This dream would never become a reality.
CHAPTER 5
Eleven years later, Pip returns to England. He says he is happy working hard in his trade, and is pleased with his simple lifestyle. He goes to visit Joe and Biddy who are now married, and tries to convince Biddy that he’s content with being a bachelor. Pip then goes to Satis House and finds that it’s no longer standing. Pip walks through the overgrown plants, thinking of Estella. He heard that she was unhappy with Drummle, but that Drummle had also died recently. As he walks under the moonlight, Pip finds Estella wandering through the old garden. They talk of the past happily; they leave the garden hand in hand, as Pip said, “I saw no shadow of another parting from her.”
