INHERIT THE WIND

Growing up as children we tend to look up to characters such as Batman and Robin, who together were able to protect and serve Gotham City. Other heroes and heroines would be the people who do the little things that have major impacts on our lives such as teachers, mentors, and families. In the book Inherit the Wind, there are several different characters who have roles with the purpose of making themselves a hero or heroin. A true hero or heroin is one who is able to be in the right spot at the right time and able to help so many people at one time. I would have to say that the true hero of this book is Henry Drummond the defense attorney for Bertram Cates purely for several reasons. It appears that Drummond has a stubborn side to him when it came to choosing the jury for the trial, he is also a superior lawyer when it comes to cross-examination for witnesses, he is also one who is not bias when it comes to the views of religion and evolution, and a well spoken individual.

The first trait that will be discussed would have to be that Drummond has a stubborn side to him. There are a few examples of this trait and to start would be the scene when Drummond tells Dunlap that he has “No questions. Not acceptable.” (pg41) Then from that point Brady gets mad and tells the Judge that it is not right for there to be any questions asked to Mr. Dunlap. That is when Drummond makes the comment “How are you?” (pg41) to the witness, then excuses him. This trait can be looked at as a good trait or a bad one from some peoples point of view, but as a lawyer that is strongly disliked in this case it would be a dreadful trait. The part that sets Drummond off is when the Judge addresses Brady as Colonel Brady and Drummond rises angry and makes the comment “I object to all this damned “Colonel” talk. I am not familiar with Mr. Brandy’s military record.” (pg4) Then Drummond goes on to explain how this is not fair for his client and that he would like the Judge to change the title of Brady’s to “Private Brady”(pg4) and followed by the mayor saying that “We can’t take it back!” (pg4). Another part of the book when Drummond shows his stubborn side is when Brady is talking to Sillers and makes the statement, “What would you think if that sweet child came home from school and told you that a Godless teacher”(pg44) Drummond at this point waste no time to say “Objection! We’re supposed to be choosing jury members! The prosecution’s denouncing the defendant before the trial has even begun!”(pg44) This is a good example of a lawyer who is not going to let this bullshit go on during a trial for a mans life. These examples of Drummond clearly show how he can goes to far and pushes the limit with people.

The second trait of Drummond that will be discussed is how well he is able to cross-examine the witness during the trial. When Howard takes the stand he makes the statement “I guess that is what Mr. Darwin thought it up.”(pg71) then Drummond says “You figure anything’s wrong about that, Howard.”(pg71). Next the Judge goes on to tell Drummond “the right to think is not on trial here”(pg71) that is when the trait of how good he is at examining the witness comes out because at the point that is when he makes the statement “With all respect to the bench, I hold that the right to think is very much on trial!”(pg7) This point that Drummond just made goes to show the reader that he knows what the trial should be about and how the town and the court room think it is over a man. When Drummond cross-examines the witness he is seeking to make the jury think about everything that is being presented and that is what a good lawyer is supposed to do. The best example of cross-examination would be when Drummond called to the stand Brady to be an expert witness on the bible. At this point it becomes apparent that Drummond is doing everything that would try to open the eyes of the jury. This is an example of heroism from the stand point that Drummond is giving it his all to change the view of the court room by just the cross-examinations.

The last trait of how Drummond was good at cross-examination alone shows part of the reason of why he is the hero which leads to the next area of discussion. It is how Drummond during the trial is not bias in anyway towards religion or evolution which shows how he holds high respect towards both types of people. The first example that comes up would be when Drummond tries to bring up “Dr. Amos D. Keller who is the head of the Department of Zoology”(pg80) and Brady says “objection.” (pg80) Then a little discouraged Drummond then calls “Dr. Keller on the stand to explain to the gentlemen of the jury exactly what the evolutionary is. How can they pass judgment on it if they don’t know what it’s all about?”(pg81) These two examples show how Drummond is trying so hard to show the court both sides of the evolution and then comes maybe the best part of the book. After all the objections Drummond makes a move that most lawyers would never do and he called to the stand Brady to be the expert witness on the Bible. Drummond asks the question “in the beginning” there were only Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel, where’d this extra women spring from.”(pg0) Then he asks if it “Never bothered you” to Brady. This just shows how Drummond is not bias against religion but more so trying to make a picture for that the jury that it is ok to think about these things to get a better understanding for the truth. This also leads us into the next trait of how Drummond is such an exceptional speaker to the courtroom.

The fourth and final trait that will be looked at is how Drummond is such a great speaker both in and out of the courtroom. The key to this trait is when Drummond makes the statement,

“Then why did God plague us with the power to think? Mr. Brady, why do you deny the one faculty which lifts man above all other creatures on the earth the power of his brain to reason. What other merit have we? The elephant is larger, the horse is stronger and swifter, the butterfly more beautiful, the mosquito more prolific, even the simple sponge is more durable! Or does a sponge think.”(pg-4)

This is a good example of how Drummond shows how he can change the mood of a room and make people really think about what is going on and that is a good trait of a good speaker. Drummond goes on to ask the question “Does man have the same privileges that a sponge does?”(pg4) and the response from Brady was “Of course”(pg4). At this point it is when it is obvious that he is a good speaker simple because he now starts to roar and point to Cates and makes the announcement “This man wishes to be accorded the same privileges as a sponge! He wishes to think!”(pg4). This once again shows how Drummond is an excellent presenter because of the attitude change in him and makes the people in court think.

After reading this paper it becomes obvious that Drummond is the true hero of the book even if he did not win the case by the jury. He won the case in my view on the fact that he changed the views of the town by showing them that it is ok to think. Drummond meets the requirements of a hero because he did the little things that are going to go a long way to help this town. Like Batman and Robin save the town of Gotham it was Drummond that saved the town of Dayton from the only being about to see things one way and not really able to see or think of other things that they were not taught. Drummond is the hero just on the fact that all odds were against him the whole time and still showed the town how thinking should be viewed as a good thing and can help the townspeople in life. It is pretty obvious that Drummond is the hero based on the evidence that he is stubborn when it comes up to selecting a jury he makes it up by skillfully cross-examinations of witnesses, not being bias when it comes to religion or evolution, and finally because he is a excellent speaker.

I.

The author of the fifteen poems is Catullus, he wrote all of his poems in lyrical format, and the original language of the poems is Latin.

a. In this poem Catullus falls in love with Lesbia and wants her to be in love with him.

b. This poem is about the pet of his beloveds, a sparrow. His beloved seems to go to the sparrow anytime in distress, or anytime she wants to play with him. And he wishes he could do the same.

c. Catullus is sick and feels that death is coming for him. He is sick and can’t find the words to say to Lesbia about what is happening to him. On his deathbed he can feel himself getting sicker, and Lesbia disgraces him by saying he is leisure and lazy.

d. In this poem Catullus describes his intense love for Lesbia and feels that no one else will share that bond with her except him.

e. He wishes for her to marry him but he is unsure that she will stay true to him. He wants to spend his life with her in “holy friendship.”

f. Catullus talks about Lesbia and her behavior with him, and how she complains about things. He feels that their relationship will soon becoming to a soon.

g. The affair between Catullus and Lesbia ended. Catullus was heart broken and could not come to face the fact that she is gone and out of his life. He looks at the situation he finally realizes that he is better off without Lesbia.

h. Catullus is saying she broke his heart and walked away expecting a better life, but as it turns out she became nothing.

i. In this poem it is said that after all the troubles he faced with his whole love affair that one true thing still stands which is his bond with his friends.

j. Catullus prays to the gods to rid him of all his sickness and make him well so that he can continue to live his life with Lesbias.

II.

I feel that it was his way of letting Lesbia go out of his life forever. I feel by him writing these poems they let him get rid of all of his frustration and it expresses his feelings that he had at that time in his life.

III.

“ No other woman can truthfully say she was cherished as much as Lesbia when I was her lover (87, pg 810 lines -4).” In this passage he expresses how he treats Lesbia and how no one else would ever live up to their love.

“Lesbia, let us live only for loving (5, pg 80 line ).” In this quote he expresses his love for her and how he would treat her.

“May she have joy & profit from her cocksmen, go down embracing hundreds all together, never with love, but without interruption wringing their balls dry (11,

pg 81 lines 17-0).” In this passage it expresses his bitterness on her leaving. There is a lot of hostility, which I think he used for his anger to be released.

IV.

The poem of I choose to further interpret is poem 8. The point of this poem is that he finally realizes losing her was not that big of a loss in his life. This is the starting point of him coming to face the fact that she made the mistake. “So much for you bitch- your life is all behind you!” This poem relates to the other poems showing that he is obsessed with her. This is where he turns his life around and decides to get rid of her.

V.

The structure of the poem I picked was rather simplistic. He didn’t really throw any curve balls in this one, he came out with all this aggression all at once. Like I said earlier this is kind of like his new beginning. The next poem begins with Lesbia starting her new beginning also.

VI.

The style of all of these poems jumps because at some points he talks in an interesting vocabulary, somewhat like other ancient poetry and epics, but at other parts he is very head on and easy for me to comprehend. Some of the vocabulary

is rather outlandish like I pointed out earlier, but other parts are very elegant like when he speaks about his obsession for his lady.

VII.

The central point of the poem is when he realizes when that she made the mistake of leaving him. I feel that he made the right choice of getting rid of her because she becomes a tramp in the next poem. I think he should have gotten rid of her earlier on.

VIII.

He in all these poems were about two people joining and separating, choosing new beginnings, and making decisions that will change there lives. These were definitely very interesting poems, but at some parts very hard to understand, but all in all they were somewhat enjoyable to read.

1984- winston's character

Winston Smith, such an ordinary name, yet so far from an ordinary character. In George Orwell’s novel, 184, the protagonist, Winston Smith, is a year old man who works for the Ministry of Truth. His job is to help rewrite history, a very monotonous job, and it seems as though Winston’s character would reflect exactly that. Nonetheless, he is a dynamic character whose actions and words not only reflect Orwell’s feelings, but also create a lively character who has the ability to change, grow, and love throughout the course of the novel. Orwell also uses symbols within the novel to highlight Winston’s character traits. Winston’s life changes dramatically when he realizes that he hates Big Brother and wants to rebel against the party. He is forced to deal with the consequences of his actions. However, they only serve to give Winston’s character more depth and scope, so that he becomes more “real”. Winston Smith is very far from a flat character and, throughout the novel, he grows changes and exhibits his true personality.

Orwell uses symbols to help demonstrate the true characteristics of Winston Smith. One symbol that is used to reveal Winston’s character is the paperweight. The paperweight reveals that Winston has both a fascination and appreciation for the past that he pursues without regard for consequence. Knowing what the outcome of his actions might be, Winston walked into an antique store, in the prole district, and purchased the paperweight from Mr. Carrington. Winston struggles to recover his own personal memories and create for himself a more accurate picture of what has happened to the world, knowing that if caught by the Thought Police, he could be faced with severe penalties. He does this by trying to reconnect with the past, buying and admiring objects from the distant past, such as the paperweight, the journal and the old picture of St. Clement’s Church. Winston’s belief that nothing can conquer the human mind is revealed by the paperweight. The coral encased and protected by the glass represents the mind and its ability to resist outside forces. Winston thinks that only his mind is unreachable by the Party. This idea is supported when Orwell writes, “Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull.” (Orwell ). This is also shown when he writes, “They cant get inside you.” (Orwell 174). Symbolically, when the Thought Police arrest Winston, the paperweight is smashed on the ground, which foreshadows that they will ultimately break Winston’s spirit, conquer his mind, and destroy his humanity. The paperweight is a symbol that reveals these two characteristics of Winston and helps the reader to develop a better understanding of how dynamic a character Winston really is.

At the beginning of the novel, Winston is doubtful about the power of the Party. He is basically a flat character. He does what the party tells him to do and does not react to his surroundings. His only hope is to find the truth behind the Party. As the story progresses, he becomes increasingly unsure of his feelings about the Party, more doubtful of the truth behind Big Brother and more troubled when being forced to watch the two minute hate. When he gets his diary and shortly thereafter, he realizes that he actually hates the Party. “All that they did was to keep alive in him the belief, or hope, that others besides himself were the enemies of the Party. Perhaps the rumors of vast underground conspiracies were true after all -- perhaps the Brotherhood really existed!” By buying the diary, it shows the reader that Winston is gaining courage and his character is growing. He is now willing to step outside of the boundaries which are acceptable to the Party and is ready to accept new ideas. The love affair with Julia is, to him, the ultimate defiance of the Party and the climax of his actions. Julia may not be Winston’s true love, yet he is attracted to her because she is “corrupt” and shares his feelings towards the Party. Their relationship is kept a secret because they both know that they will be killed if the Party learns of their relationship. Winston’s true feelings towards Julia are shown when they are talking to O’Brien about the brotherhood, “You are prepared, the two of you, to separate and never see one another again? No! broke in Julia... Until he had said it, he did not know which word he was going to say. No, he said finally.” (pg. 180) The two of them are willing to do anything for the Brotherhood, yet they claim they would never compromise their love for each other. By this point in the novel, Winston’s character understands what love is, feels it emotionally, and is willing to do anything to preserve it.

Shortly thereafter, Winston is captured by the Thought Police and taken to the Ministry of Love to be “rehabilitated”. When he arrives at the Ministry of Love, he still felt a sense of rebellion. Although the Party tried to take away all feeling, Winston and Julia still felt love towards each other, a deep emotion which indicates one of Winston’s many aspects. Winston’s sense of rebellion stays with him throughout all the torture, until he is sent to Room 101. Before this, he believes that he will be able to go along with their ways, and still make it appear that he has changed. Once released, he will know what mistakes not to repeat when attempting to rebel. Room 101 changed his character immensely. While being faced with his greatest fear, rats, he wished Julia was the one receiving the pain, not him. This was the one promise he made to Julia when they agreed to join the Brotherhood. With this one wish, his character took a turn for the worse. “There are occasions when a human being will stand out against pain, even to the point of death. But for everyone there is something unendurable -- something that cannot be contemplated. Courage and cowardice are not involved…It is the same with the rats. For you, they are unendurable. They are a form of pressure that you cannot withstand, even if you wished to. You will do what is required of you.” (Pg. 8) He had now given in to the Party. He was one of them. Winston could now be molded in any way the Party wanted. The new and “improved” Winston is finally apparent in the last two lines of the book when Orwell writes, He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother. (pg. 11)

Winston’s character grows and changes throughout the novel. Despite Winstons knowledge that there is no escaping Big Brother and the political machinery by which his life is bound, he still defies authority by buying, keeping, and writing in the diary; his affair with Julia and, his meeting with OBrien. All of his actions take place in the face of tremendous odds. Each incident adds to Winston’s character and makes him seem like more of a real person. Winston, as a character, is faced with the same struggles that all people must deal with, and this lets the reader feel more of a connection with him. He had to deal with his weakness for rats, the defining moment in which he gave in to the Party. Every individual has moments when they feel like giving up, unable to cope. Winston’s giving in to his weakness shows that he human. He has moved beyond his level of coping ability. Of course, Orwell uses Winston to portray his own feelings yet he also created a “human” character, one who was forced to deal with many of the issues facing us today.

The Impressionists, Fauves, and the Cubists are but a few of the innovative groups of artists who, despite the fame they enjoy today, met with overwhelmingly negative criticism during their time. In 1888 another group of young painters was formed. They proclaimed themselves “the Nabis”, from the Hebrew word for prophet. They began in Pont-Aven when one artist revealed to another that there were other ways of painting than those taught at the Academy Julian. They began painting landscapes in pure colors side by side with no transition between them. In this play of color and shape the artists saw a mysterious amulet with a secret meaning that had to be decoded bit by bit. To reduce the elements of a scene to an interplay of shapes and colors became the Nabis’ credo. The Nabis dreamed of a world made better through art that would express ideal beauty and the nobility of feelings. Although they remained friends, after 100 the Nabis sought out their own personal paths. Two of these painters, Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, form, color and content remained similar throughout their career.

Edouard Vuillard was born in 1868in Cuiseaux, a tiny French town near the Swiss border. At age nine, he moved with his family to Paris. His father, a retired army officer, died several years later, leaving his mother with three children and only a small income. She came from family of textile designers, and to make a living she first operated a lingerie shop and then a dressmaking business. Edouard lived with his mother, his greatest supporter, for her entire life. In 1888, Vuillard studied briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome, but disliked the conservative approach. Along with the other Nabis, Vuillard first made small expressive paintings of interiors using flat

bands of color, then began adding detailed surface patterns to his work. By the turn of the century he was making striking, large-scale decorative wall paintings and folding screens, and later, portraits of prosperous French families. While Vuillard’s art remained figurative, his intense focus on the picture itself would foreshadow elements of abstraction in the twentieth century. Vuillard died at the beginning of World War II, just as the quiet, domestic world he had painted for so many years was about to be shattered.

Pierre Bonnard spent his childhood in the village of Le Grand-Lemps, which served as subject matter in his early paintings. While earning a law degree, Bonnard simultaneously attended art classes at the Academy Julian in Paris. There Bonnard worked in the most varied of formats, designing posters, book illustrations, sheet music, theater programs, stage sets, costumes, and stained glass windows, while also producing drawings and lithographs for newspapers and magazines and experimenting with photography. The diversity of his art reflects a profound philosophical unity. His aim from the beginning was to create a personal vision without convention. Bonnard’s thinking was accompanied by an obsession to recover his initial perception, what he later called, “finding again the first sensation.” This thinking carried on to all of his artwork until his death in 147 at the age of 80.

Edouard Vuillard’s “Foliage Oak Tree and Fruit Seller” was painted in 118 and is distemper on canvas. Vuillard painted this tapestry-like image for the Paris residence of art dealer George Bernheim. Here he is depicting the view from his mother’s second-floor bedroom in the villa Closerie des Genets at Vaucresson, a western suburb of Paris. The Vuillard family rented this villa every summer until 15. The heavily encrusted

paint surface of soft greens and blues forms a dense screen of foliage through which can be seen women, including the fruit seller of the title. Vuillard organized the complex patterns and shapes formed by leaves, branches, and fencing around the prominent tree trunk in the foreground. Vuillard began this painting during the final year of World War I.

Pierre Bonnard’s “Earthly Paradise” was painted between 116 and 10 and is oil on canvas. This richly colored canvas is one of four decorative panels commissioned for Gaston Bernheim. The lush outdoor setting is filled with Biblical allusions to Eden. The nude couple symbolized Adam and Eve surrounded by numerous animals including a monkey, birds, rabbits, and a snake. The implied tension between the remote and distant man and the seductively posed reclining woman suggests the Biblical fall from grace, and may also allude to a romance in Bonnard’s life. The painter communicated his smoldering vision of a lost paradise with the brilliant hues and fluid brushwork that date back to the impressionism.

Both “Earthly Paradise” and “ Foliage Oak Tree and Fruit Seller” are abstract paintings. While different artists painted these paintings, you would not know that by just looking at them. The brush stroke and use of color are very similar. Bonnard uses unusual colors for different objects. An example of this is the blue tree. Vuillard does the same with the purple background. Both painting are using nature and foliage as a form of paradise or escape from what is really going on in the world. While “Earthly Paradise” shows a type of heaven, “Foliage..” shows reality. Vuillard’s painting is of

what he saw while looking out his window. Bonnard’s painting is of what he wishes he saw outside his window.

While the settings of these painting may be different, both share the same meaning and purpose. The paintings were painted so the people looking at them would feel calm and happy. How can one not look at “Earthly Paradise” and not think about how the world or they’re own life should be? Both Bonnard and Vuillard belonged to the Nabis and were friends for many years. Because of these two paintings it is obvious that they each had an effect on one another. It is almost as though the same painter painted both. These painting are proof that the Nabis shared the same ideas regarding form, color, and content.

Alchemy in Imagery Rosicrucian Influence on Edward Taylor’s Poetry

As a Puritan preacher, it is expected that Edward Taylor would include theological imagery in his poetry. What is not expected is the use of Rosicrucian representation in this imagery. The use of alchemical symbolism is prevalent in many of Taylor’s meditations. The intent of this paper is to show the Rosicrucian influence on Taylor’s poetry and explain how a Puritan preacher came to use alchemical and mystical imagery in the representation of Christian beliefs. This will be accomplished by showing that Taylor had access to Rosicrucian literature, made references to alchemy in his poetry, and by explicating one of Taylor’s poems to determine the use of imagery related to alchemy.

At twenty-six years of age, Taylor, “armed with a few letters of introduction, presented himself to Increase Mather… Mather must have welcomed him warmly, for Taylor spent the next three nights at Mather’s home.”(Grabo r. ed. 5) Taylor and Mather became close friends (Grabo r. ed. 1) allowing Taylor access to the Mather library and Rosicrucian texts (Freels). The Mather library incorporated numerous Alchemical works including Michael Maier’s Laws of the Fraternity of the Rosie Cross, Helmont’s Ortus Medicinae, Riverius’ Practice of Physick, to which Taylor delegates substantial space in his portfolio, John Dee’s Artis et Naturae cum Enlightenment and Roger Bacon’s Epistolae Fratris (Freels). Another possible source of Rosicrucian literature available to Taylor was the library of Connecticut Governor John Winthrop Jr., whose holdings were described as, “the most significant and extensive alchemical library in colonial America.” In 1787, Ezra Stiles, Taylor’s grandson and President of Yale University, recorded in his diary a legend concerning Winthrop’s prowess as an alchemist, displaying an interest in alchemy that his grandfather may have stimulated. “Ezra Stiles chose Taylor’s copy of the alchemical treatise, John Webster’s Metallographia , to write a short memoir dedicated to Taylor indicating perhaps a fond memory connected with Taylor’s enthusiasm for alchemy” (Stanford 508).

On May 5, 1671, Edward Taylor and four of his classmates [Hull, Mather, Sewall and Chauncy] at Harvard presented their final declamations. Taylor wrote 1 lines of heroic couplets for this occasion. Taylor’s declamation includes the first reference to alchemy written by a Puritan poet “no such spirits flow/ From mine alembick , neither have I skill/ To rain such honey falls out of my still” (Clack 1). Taylor later followed this, in Meditation 1., by describing the alchemist

The Boasting Spagyirst (Insipid Phlegm,

Whose Words out strut the Sky) vaunts he hath rife

The Water, Tincture, Lozenge, Gold, Gem,

Of Life itselfe. But here’s the Bread of Life.

I’le lay my Life, his Aurum Vitae Red

Is to my Bread of Life, worse than DEAD HEAD .

“In the first few lines of this passage Taylor chides the alchemist (“Boasting Spagyirst”) for his attempts to create stone transmutation (“Lozenge, Gold and Gem”) and the elixir vitae (“Water, Tincture … Of Life”)” (Clack 14). What is interesting is Taylor’s reference to “Aurum Vitae Red”. This refers to the liquid alchemists called the “Gold of Life” which was reported to prolong life, and in rare cases restore the dead. Although Taylor was familiar with the philosophy behind the transmutation of metals, he used the spiritual metaphors of alchemy to illustrate what he saw as the regenerating powers of God’s grace through the theanthropy of Christ” (14). This imagery, through the use of alchemical terminology, is prevalent in many of Taylor’s Meditations and other poems including for example; the use of vitae in Meditations 1., 1., .46, .60, .80, and .11 but also in the poem “The Effects of this Reply with a Fresh Assault from Satan” (Russell 56).

Meditation 1.7 is “perhaps the one meditation to which scholars frequently turn for an example of Taylor’s use of alchemical tropes” (15) due to it’s richness in alchemical imagery beginning with Christ as an alchemical still.

Thy Humane Frame, my Glorious Lord, I spy,

A Golden Still with Heavenly Choice drugs filld;

Thy Holy Love, the Glowing heate whereby,

The Spirit of Grace is graciously distilld.

Thy Mouth the Neck through which these spirits still.

My soul thy Violl make, and therewith fill.

The value of the still is shown through its golden color and therefore, the value of the “Heavenly Choice drugs” that have been distilled by God’s “Holy Love, the Glowing heate.”

The distilled “Spirit of Grace” is the “Tincture” (or elixir vitae) found in stanza two. Taylor desires this to be distilled into his alembic soul.

Thy Speech the Liquour in thy Vessell stands,

Well ting’d with Grace a blessed Tincture, Loe,

Thy Words distilld, Grace in thy Lips pourd, and,

Give Graces Tincture in them where they go.

Thy words in graces tincture stilld, Lord, may

The Tincture of thy Grace in me Convay.

Four of these six lines refer to this “Tincture” of grace. Grace poured from the lips of God into Taylor, the “Vessell”, is used to renew his soul as stated by, “thy Grace in me Convay.”

Although Taylor chose Psalms 45, “Grace in thy lips is poured out,” as the text for this meditation, the reference to both the alchemical distillation process and the tincture are of particular interest. Paracelsus believed that the tincture had the power to transform base metal or base material into gold. According to Metallographia, the “essence of gold is threefold 1) Coeleste & est solutium, celestial and loosed, ) Elementare, fluid, and ) Metallicum, that which is corporeal. Further, it is to be known that the first ens, that is to say, the first composition of Gold, which as yet remains a liquor not coagulated, doth renew and restore whatsoever it takes … The Philosophers often make mention of another sort of aurum potabile, or the tincture of Gold, which is not drawn forth of common Gold, but forth from another subject; and this we touched where we spake of Astrilish [Celestial] Gold.” In this passage we can see how Taylor would have transformed the “Grand Elixir” or elixir vitae of the alchemists into a metaphor for the tincture of God’s grace.

In the final stanza of Meditation 1.7, Taylor moves from Christ’s words as tincture to Christ’s words as Gold.

That Golden Mint of Words, thy Mouth Divine,

Doth tip these Words, which by my Fall were spoiled;

And Dub with Gold dug out of Graces mine

That they thine Image might have in them foild.

Grace in thy Lips pourd out’s as Liquid Gold.

thy Bottle make my Soule, Lord, it to hold.

The association of grace with gold, “Golden Mints of Words”, “Gold dug out of Grace”, concludes in the image of “Grace” as “Liquid Gold” in which Taylor uses his own soul as an alchemical vessel to hold the precious substance. “Implicit in this passage is the idea that God’s “Grace” is tantamount to His joy and love given form in Christ” (16). To Taylor, this “Grace” becomes a most transmutative substance having the ability to redeem his soul. In this, Christ is the agent of transmutation through which the soul moves to a state of grace.

Making use of his Meditations, Taylor emphasizes this point “Christ is comparable with the philosopher’s stone, created by God-the-alchemist to regenerate the fallen soul” (16). In doing this, Taylor shows Christ, in His role as the philosopher’s stone, as moving Taylor from a state of despair in the beginning of most of his poems to a state of grace at the end. This Rosicrucian imagery is not limited to Taylor’s poetry. For example, Sermon X “contains alchemical vessel imagery, mentioning ‘Aqua Celestis,’ as a synonym for grace, and the ‘Summum Bonum’ to describe Christ as the ‘celestiall vessell Fild up to the brim with the church’” (Freels).

The presence of Rosicrucian literature in Puritan libraries indicates a gradual softening of Puritan attitudes toward the alchemical arts. Not only did such notable Puritans as Edward Taylor, Increase and Cotton Mather, John Winthrop Jr. and his son Wait Still Winthrop have knowledge of Rosicrucian works, but that Rosicrucian philosophy, particularly in relation to the healing arts, was a source of speculation and interest. We can conclude from texts known to be in his library, his close association with the Mathers’ and the Winthrops’, and statements made about him by his grandson, Ezra Stiles, that Edward Taylor had ample access to Rosicrucian literature. We can further conclude from the imagery in his Meditations, other poetry and sermon’s, that Taylor implored alchemical symbols as metaphors from which to describe such things as grace to his parishioners. Returning to Meditation 1.7 and Taylor’s image of the “Golden Still with Heavenly Choice drugs filld,” we are shown the extent of Taylor’s alchemical knowledge and his familiarity with Paracelsian [alchemical] medicine. The metaphors used by Taylor show Christ as the celestial physician whose sole purpose is to heal through grace.

Symbols are used in many works of literature in the book, the scarlet letter; there are many symbols that are used in connections with themes of the novel. The author Nathaniel Hawthorne knows how to connect these symbols to the themes very well.

The author connects theese themes to the novel in many ways. There are few major themes in the novel such as, sin, guilt, love, and revenge. He connects e symbols to the themes of the novel in more than one way. He makes it easy for the reader to relate the themes to the novel. He also makes it easy to understand the meanings of the symbols that he uses to relate to the themes. He directs our thinking to the themes when we think of the symbols and he does this very well.

Two symbols in the novel are the forest, and pearl. These symbols can relate to the themes of the novel in many ways. The orest relates to a few themes of the book, such as sin, love, and revenge. It relates to sin in that it is a place were sin takes place,it relates to love in that it is the place were hester conveyed her love to dimesdale, and it also relates to revenge in that it is the place were final revnge was sought in hetres opinion, on chillingworht becausenow she could finally get away. The other symbol , is pearl . pearl is the basis for all of the themes in the novel ,she relates to them all . pearl relates to the theme of sin ,wich is one of the main themes in the novel, she does this by being conceived wich is against the law so it is sin . she relates to guilt in that dimesdale is feelsguilt for seven years from what he has done. She also relates to love in that it is love wich brought her mother and father together. And in a sense she relates to revenge in that hester sought revenge for her husband leaving her,but also it is a relation ot chillingworth seeking revenge on who ever created pearl with hester.

The uses and porposes of the first symbol are not very simple. The forest is a very complexed place,it is a ceneter for witchcraft and hatered it symbolizez hate and satan. The forest is not a place for play or joy. But the forest is the place were hester and dimesdale plan their escape . this is what makes it a nice place. It was said that pearl was comfortable in the forest . pearl was a creation o fsin so the fact that she is comfortable in the forest is not suprising. It is said thaty the forest is a horrible place but it is also a place were happiness can be achieved.

The other symbol is Pearl, she has many purposes in this novel. She is the basis for all that is good , and all that is bad int his novel. Pearl was conceived in sin but at the same time conceived in love, that love being hester and dimesdale. She also symbolizes al that is good in hesters life. She does this in being her daughter and always being there. Pearl is a rebellious child she is rebellious because her mother is also a rebel in this perfect puritan society that frowns apon being imperfect in a puritan mind. Pearl represents what is good and what is bad she is the main symbol in the novel because she is connested to all of themes in many ways this makes her unique . she is the main symbol for so much and the novel would not be the same if theses connections wree not true.

In every novel ,or story there are many symbols used. The only true proper meanings of these symbols are brought out in the writing of a good novel; Hawthorne brought out the true meanings of the symbols in this novel and connected them to the themes in a very articulate way. He is a truly amazing author, and couldn’t have written a better book.

The Two Poets Ferlinghetti and Snyder

The Beat movement, a reaction to society by a generation that perceived itself as helpless and expressed a need for individualism despite a conformity in society, had a significant impact on two poets, Ferlinghetti and Snyder. Raised and educated during the World War II and the following Depression period, they wrote poems about their unique views and attitudes toward life. Lawrence Ferlinghetti¡¯s The Pennycandystore Beyond the El and Gary Snyder¡¯s Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout illustrate how they were influenced by the Beat movement, and how does it affect their poetic styles in term of recent American poetry, which pays special attention to voice, visual images, and place. Although there are many differences between their poetic styles, they both have a common factor that moved them as a poet the unique perspective of life.

There are many differences between these two poets, especially in poetic techniques and styles they use to convey meanings; most of Ferlinghetti¡¯s work is in free verse, almost sounding like prose; Snyder is more associated with formality. In Ferlinghetti¡¯s The Pennycandystore Beyond the El, there is no regular rhythm nor a specific pattern of rhymes. Moreover, the poem is enjambed; his thought is carried without any interruption of punctuation. Rough breaks and indentions ensure that the poem is written in unconventional form. In contrast, Snyder¡¯s poems contain some factors that suggest formality, especially the overall format of the poem. Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout is divided into two stanzas, unlike The Pennycandystore.., each stanza containing five lines. Also, although it is not uniform throughout the poem, it has a rhythmic pattern of meter, a combined form of iambic and anapestic. Not only do these differences exist between the two, but also some similarities in techniques are noticeable. Ferlinghetti uses one primary rhythm by stressing the first syllables in the beginnings of lines. Dictions like Jellybeans, tootsie rolls, and pennycandystore gives the impression that the poem portrays a playful and light-sided scene of New York City rather than a tranquil and serious tone suggested in Snyder¡¯s poem. He achieves this by stressing one particular sound, ¡®s,¡¯ and it is this consonance that creates a calm and soft atmosphere of Sourdough Mountain. The techniques the two poets use have more differences than similarities. In other words, their poetic styles are unique and do not associate with each others; however, the meanings and themes of their poems have numerous ideas in common.

According to the Anthology of American poetry, there are three factors that American poets have paid special attention to in recent American poetry voice, visual imagery, and place. The Beat poetry poets, Ferlinghetti and Snyder¡¯s poems both contain these three factors. Ferlinghetti¡¯s poem, as mentioned above, portrays a seemingly playful scene of the city, ¡®place,¡¯ by visualizing a strong image of the elevated subway of New York. Snyder, in Mid-August..., also portrays a scene of landscape but with totally different feeling the heavenly view from the top of Sourdough Mountain. The combination of each poet¡¯s voice, visual imagery, and place contribute to the central meaning, theme of the poem both poems talk about life, even though each mentions only about physical places, a city and a mountain. In The Pennycandystore Beyond the El, Ferlinghetti describes a dramatic scene of breathless subway station of New York. The view of the speaker changes from this sophisticated scene of the pennycandystore beyond the subway station to an empty street, where a girl hurriedly runs somewhere and falling leaves are everywhere. A pennycandystore in the crowded city of New York, intricate subway station, a breathlessly running girl, and falling leaves all suggest shortness of life; that life is too short to live and understand the complexity of it. While the poem is about the crazily moving city life, Snyder¡¯s Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout talks about tranquil, stable, and timeless life. The poem¡¯s calm atmosphere and visual images of the gorgeous mountain of Sourdough tell us that life is timeless when ¡°Drinking cold snow-water from a tin cup Looking down for miles Through high still air.¡±

The two poets say that life can be either short as a time it takes for leaves to fall or timeless like a view for miles through high still air. Their unique perspectives of life suggest that our lives could only be changed or nourished by individual¡¯s own behavior toward life. One can either live a life like a leaf falling down from a tree, or a timeless view through high still air. In my opinion, life should be the combination of the two; life should always be fast as the leaves fall, but it also needs some moments in life that one feels as if it were never ending, like a high still air.

I will be investigating the respiration of yeast when adding more glucose.

Variables Temperature

Amount of sugar solution.

Amount of yeast.

Concentration of sugar solution.

Amount of shaking and acclimatization

We are going to measure the amount of Co given off from he yeast respiring as we add more sugar solution every mins, recording the amount of Co every minute.

Temperature will affect the rate of yeast respiration. I shall keep the temperature of he mixture and water bath under control by using a thermometer and checking it constantly. I shall also keep swirling the thermometer to keep the heat distributed. Also, as it will take longer for the temperature inside the test tube the same as the water bath, I shall leave the apparatus for two minutes, keeping the temperature constant.

The amount of yeast used in the experiment will be kept the same.

The concentration of the sugar solution will also be kept the same and we will use only one batch else if two different batches are used this will upset the results.

Acclimatization and shaking will help to activate the yeast and prepare the solution for timing. If it is improperly mixed, acclimatized to temperature or activated, the results would not be fair and inaccurate. I will shake the flask thoroughly each time I add a further 5ml of sugar solution until I can see bubbles being created. I shall also leave the flask in the water bath at the required heat for two minutes before the experiment is carried out.

Prediction I predict that the yeast’s respiratory rate of reaction should increase in speed as the % of glucose increases. However this may at some point peak and therefore cease to increase in speed.

My reason for the above prediction is that yeast is a unicellular fungus, which feeds saprophytically and can respire both aerobically and anaerobically. In the experiment the yeast will be respiring anaerobically and breaking down the glucose stored in it as a waste product of this process it will also form CO and alcohol in the form of ethanol. This respiration process is called fermentation. The yeast breaks down the glucose using a series of enzymes.

I deduce from this that the more glucose that is present in the yeast the more will be broken down and therefore more CO and ethanol will be produced as waste products at a faster rate. There are two main types of respiration, aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic respiration releases more energy than anaerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration glucose is combined with oxygen to be converted into carbon dioxide and water releasing energy.

Method My method is as follows

1. I will place the flask of yeast into a tray of hot water (which will be kept at the same temp throughout the experiment)

. I will take a test tube of water and place the delivery tube into the water (as show in the diagram)

. I will then add (using the syringe) 5ml of sugar solution and replace the bung and start the stop watch.

4. I will count the amount of bubbles that come out of the receiving tube into the test tube. And record the about each minute.

5. After mins I will add another 5mls of sugar solution and repeat the process.

Diagram of Apparatus

To make this a fair test

I will be taking recordings of each amount of sugar water before adding another 5mls.

I will be making sure I get consistent results, otherwise I will repeat the experiment until consistent results are given.

Certain safety precautions must be taken When dealing with yeast and alcohol I must make sure not to inhale or consume in any way anything during the experiment as a lot of it may be harmful in someway. Also if any glass is broken for any reason it must be cleared up properly and safely.

Results I have ensured that my results are accurate by controlling all the variables stated in my Planning. I also took care when using the equipment so as to retain continuity throughout the experiment. For this, I checked everything was set up correctly at each reading and prepared my solution in the same way. To make sure that the results were as reliable as I could make them, I calculated the mean of three results

Minutes 1 Average

5ml 10ml 15ml 1ml 1ml

10ml 54ml 54ml 5ml 56ml

15ml 68ml 66ml 7ml 6ml

0ml 8ml 8ml 7ml 8ml

5ml 11ml 10ml 16ml 1ml

I can see from the results and graph on the next page, that the trend was that the longer we left the yeast, the higher the volume of CO produced. Up to the point where the enzymes denatured. So the amount of Co being produced decreases as the enzymes denature until all the reaction has taken place and no Co is being given off.

Background Information I found some secondary information on the internet and put it together with some of my background knowledge to form the following information

Respiration is the release of energy from glucose or other organic substances. Energy is required for growth, repair, movement and other metabolic activities. The energy released from glucose in respiration is used to produce a chemical called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is where the energy released during respiration is stored for future use.

FERMENTATION is the breakdown of sugars by bacteria and yeast using a method of respiration without oxygen (anaerobic respiration). It involves a culture of yeast and a solution of sugar, producing ethanol and carbon dioxide with the aid of the enzymes.

All the ENZYMES are protein chains of amino acids. They exist in the form of a structure with hydrogen bonds holding the pitches together. On the amino acid molecules, there is R a group. They react with each other to form peptide bonds, transforming the chain into a -dimensional structure. Along the chain there are active sites where interaction between the enzyme and the substrate happens. These sites are sensitive to heat, like the hydrogen bonds that hold the D molecule together. When heat is applied to the enzyme, energy is given into the molecule. The active sites deform and the hydrogen bonds break, denaturing this enzyme. It would not be able to function as usual, and this is not reversible. This is called DENATURATION. The D structure would breakdown and the active sites would change in shape; they would not be able to accommodate the substrate any more. The analogy of this is to compare a key to a keyhole. If the keyhole has changed, the same key would not fit in any more, and the lock would not be unlocked. The same thing happens here, and fermentation could not continue after this has occurred. Also when the temperature is too low, the enzymes would not work because there is not enough energy for activities to happen.

Yeast has to make energy, stored as ATP to carry out all cellular functions. To do this they can respire both aerobically when there is plenty of oxygen, but where oxygen is short, they respire anaerobically; by this, they are called partial anaerobes. This produces less energy, but keeps the yeast alive. Pyruvic acid has to be broken down in respiration when formed by breaking down of glucose molecules, this can’t be done in the same way as it is aerobically when respiring anaerobically which is how the carbon dioxide and ethanol is formed through the zymase. Here is the equation for anaerobic respiration

glucose ----------------- ethanol + carbon dioxide +energy

C6H1O6 CH5OH CO 10 Kj/mole

Analysis The Graph is a curve, all of the results fit almost perfectly into the curve. The graph shows that by changing the amount of sugar in the solution the more carbon dioxide is produced. . I also found that the rate of respiration dropped of completely after a certain point, highlighting the denaturisation of the yeast’s enzymes.

Conclusion I have found that as I increased the temperature of the yeast solution, the rate of respiration of the yeast increased to a certain point where, as the temperature rose to a certain level, (in my case about 68ÂșC) the rate of respiration eventually cut off.

My hypothesis and prediction can be backed up with the findings; from looking at my results and graphs you can see the rise and fall of respiration. They are explained due to the theories of enzyme-substrate with lock and key and kinetics. Where these meet is when kinetic theory states that an increase in temperature means more particle collisions between reactants and so a faster rate of reaction, and in enzyme-substrate where the enzyme is sensitive to heat, and about a certain temperature, the active site will begin denaturing, so slowing and eventually stopping the reaction.

Evaluation of Experiment

The experiment went quite well as I was able to obtain accurate sets of recordings. I think that the method used was good but could be improved by a better way of keeping the yeast at the same temperature and the same concentration of the solution.

“Cloudstreet is a novel about both loss and gain”

Discuss

Cloudstreet by Australian Author Tim Winton is most certainly a novel about loss and gain. Winton incorporates a stream of incidences that involve both loss and gain. It is these incidences that are the backbone of the novels plot. Within Cloudstreet both loss and gain are clearly shown through many scenarios often involving death and birth, money, hope, and moving. Almost the entire plot of the novel Cloudstreet surrounds these four topics resulting in a large majority of Cloudstreet focusing on both loss and gain.

The divided house on Cloudstreet is a physical symbol representing the fact that the Pickles and the Lambs are two contrasting families. One major difference is that one family believes in faith, whilst the other family literally revolves around “the hairy hand of god” other wise known as “lady luck”.

Sam Pickles basis his life on luck, with bad luck normally outdoing the good. It is through Sam that the reader gets an insight into the loss and gain of money at the upper most extreme. Unlike Lester and Oriel of the Lamb family who gains money through intelligent thinking and hard work, Sam Pickles earns on the job and a majority of the time losses this money through gambling. Although on the infrequent day when Sam feels lucky he’ll go out and double his earnings. “He came home with his pockets stuffed, his stump aching, and the kids grabbing at him on the stairs to feel success.” Although infrequent this event represents a gain for the Pickles family, as it gets the next meal on the table and buys the necessities for living. These never ending events of the losing and gaining of money reflect the heavy importance of loss and gain within the novel.

Birth is a topic that is entwined throughout the story that shows the negative and positive outcomes of loss and gain. Birth is a subject that has great importance in the novel Cloudstreet. Loss and gain affects both the Pickles and the Lamb family when it comes to the topic of birth. The excitement over the announcement that Rose and Quick were to become parents was soon destroyed when Rose has a miscarriage. After the incident of the miscarriage Rose’s depression is the result of this unbearable loss. “Rose just wouldn’t be comforted about the baby, and in the end Quick knew there was nothing he could do.” This loss although not forgotten was overcome, as Rose and Quick once again announced that Rose was pregnant. It is the gaining of this child that plays an important role in the novel, as it shows the literal uniting of the divided household. This release of division fuses the families together stripping the house on Cloudstreet of its tragic history. The following quote describes the house the moment the child, Wax Harry, is born. ‘The room sighs, the house breaths it’s first painless breath in half a century.” The loss and gain experienced through the subject of birth outlines the importance of loss and gain within the novel.

Death is an issue that displays the sadness felt due to a loss by all characters within the novel. Both the families experience the death of Quick and Rose’s unborn child on an emotional forward, as it was something that many of the characters within the novel were hoping for. The death of Ted Pickles is a loss that is very controversial, as this death saddens all but one member of the Pickles family. This member who is not really affected by the death is Rose, as she barely even spoke with her brother when he was around, where as Dolly deeply felt this loss of a child. The following quote describes Dolly’s emotions towards her sons death ‘they killed my baby! Him the only one I loved, you useless spineless two-faced bastards! Heeee was the one. He was the one. You can all fuckin die because I want him back. He was the one.

The Lamb family also experiences a death although it doesn’t become literal until the end of the novel. At the beginning of the novel, when the audience gets their first insight into the lamb family there is an incident were Fish slips under the net, whilst prawning and he drowns. Although Oriel resuscitates her son he is not the same, the character and spark in Fish has died, he is now stuck in his own world. This loss of Fish’s bright personality strongly affects the family, as to them it feels like Fish is dead.

Money, birth and death are only a select amount of subjects that make up the novel focusing on the loss and gain of two families. The loss and gain of the two families are the foundation or body of the entire novel, therefore through the evidence given above Cloudstreet is most certainly a novel about loss and gain.

Romeo and Juliet- Love and Hate

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Romeo and Juliet- Love and Hate even at the eleventh hour. Love verses hate is one of the major themes in the play and most of the action in the play relates to one, or the other. There are many examples of love in ‘Romeo and Juliet’; Family love, love of friendship, forbidden love and sexual love. However, I will only discuss the three main kinds of love; courtly love, physical love and spiritual love, in this essay. The main importance for the variety of kinds of love is to engage the audience by changing the language and representing each kind of love with bold characters. Shakespeare adds interest to the play by interchanging scenes of different kinds of love to make the dramatic difference between them obvious.

The convection of courtly love originated in the medieval period and was recognised among the Victorian upper class. It involved intense adoration and respect by a man towards a woman who was pure or in some other way unattainable. Romeo suffers the stereotypical symptoms in Act1 Scene1. He is a courtly lover for a girl named Rosaline. Romeo feels lovesick for Rosaline but she does not return the feelings, which makes it typically courtly love. Rosaline is unattainable and refuses Romeo’s love because she has sworn never to marry,

“She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow”

His love for Rosaline may seem deep, but it is truer to say the love is artificial and lacks sincerity and passion. His behaviour involves mooning about on long walks, alone in the morning. However as dawn breaks he confides himself to the dullness of his bedroom,

“Away from light steals home my heavy son.

And private in his chamber pens himself

Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out.”

Romeo also expresses his pain by his melancholic behaviour. He is extremely depressed and shows this by his unnecessary sighing and use of oxymoron’s such as, “O heavy lightness”, “O loving hate”, “bright smoke” and “cold fire”. This is part of the typical courtly love language that the Elizabethan audience would recognise, because in that period courtly love was a common thing among the upper class. Young men thought it to be a challenge to pursue a woman who they knew would deny their love. Benvolio gives young naive Romeo the wise advice to forget Rosaline,

“Be ruled by me, forget to think of her.”

Now I will look at how Shakespeare presents the coarse view of love with the particular interest to the physical aspect of lovemaking. Shakespeare represents this more humorous kind of love through the vulgar characters of the nurse and Mercutcio. The nurse has a coarse, bawdy humour, which is shown in Act 1 Scene , when the nurse makes a certain remark about something her husband once said,

“Yea, dust thou fall upon thy face?

Thou wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit,

Wilt thou not Jule?”

He said this once when Juliet was a young girl and was referring to Juliet having sex later on in life. The audience would be entertained by the many crude references to love making which the nurse makes. In the nurse’s view, another good reason for Juliet getting married would be that she might become pregnant,

“No less; nay bigger. Women grow by men.”

This is typical for the vulgar nurse to remark upon. Even though the audience would have been enthralled by the intensity and passion of Romeo and Juliet’s true, spiritual love, they would be amused by the many crude references to physical love in the play. The nurse does not seem to understand the feelings which Romeo and Juliet have for each other and only thinks someone would marry Juliet for her family’s wealth,

“I tell you, he that can lay hold of her

Shall have the chinks.”

Mercutio, like the nurse, also can’t comprehend with their feelings of true love or courtly love because he has not experienced them himself. When Romeo is suffering courtly love for Rosaline, Mercutio is not the slightest bit sympathetic but recommends that Romeo should fight love back, and he will soon defeat it,

“If love be rough with you, be rough with love;

Prick love pricking and you beat love down.”

Mercutio adds humour to the play by making many bawdy remarks about physical love. He uses very vulgar language, especially in Act Scene1 when he is talking about lovemaking, but tries to disguise his bawdy remarks of sex by using fancy language and metaphors.

“To raise a spirit in his mistress’ circle

Of some strange nature, letting it there stand

Till she had laid it and conjured it down;”

In this speech he is pretending to talk of Romeo’s spirit but is in fact talking of sex. Mercutio is also completely insulting towards the nurse in Act Scene4, which the audience would have different views about but would all be very interested. He firstly mocks what she is wearing, and then insults her by calling her fan prettier than her face,

“for her fans the fairer face.”

He then pretends she arouses him and calls her a whore, which is unsurprising of predictable of Mercutio, who is impolite and disrespectful. In this scene the contrast between the polite Romeo and the sarcastic, vulgar Mercutio is made noticeably obvious.

When Romeo meets Juliet, he feels a completely different kind of love to which he felt for Rosaline. He has a true, spiritual connection with Juliet in contrast to the infatuation he had felt for Rosaline.

It is love at first sight for Romeo and Juliet, when Romeo sees her across the crowded room. He praises her with poetic language, which we have not yet heard from young Romeo. He uses similes to describe her beauty,

“It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night

As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear-

Beauty to rich for use, for earth to dear.”

The audience would quickly understand that Romeo is in love with Juliet and that every word he speaks in straight from the heart. He immediately realises that he did not truly love Rosaline,

“Did my heart love till now?”

“For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.”

Romeo has decided that, even without talking to Juliet, she is his true love and he does not need to search no longer.

“Forswear it, sight.”

When Romeo and Juliet first speak, their conversation is in the form of a sonnet, a love poem. Their union of minds indicating to the audience they share true, honest spiritual love. Romeo talks to Juliet pretending she is a saint and he is merely a pilgrim. She picks up on this fantasy idea using it to steal a kiss. Their linked minds having fun with words, both eager for one another showing it playfully,

“Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?

Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer”

In the famous ‘balcony’ scene we see that Romeo and Juliet’s love has a passionate sexuality, but it remains one of an honest kind.

“Sleep dwell upon there eyes, place in thy breast!

Would I were sleep and peace, so sweet to rest!”

Romeo requests that Juliet will not remain a virgin. Juliet later expresses her passionate response,

“My bounty is as boundless as the sea,

My love as deep; the more I give to thee.

The more I have, for both are infinite.”

This is a powerful, mutual, fulfilling love that the pair wish to honour in marriage. The pair’s passion is conveyed by what they say to each other. They are falling deeper in love with every word that is said. They wish they did not have to leave each other,

“I would I were thy bird”

Even their goodbyes are overdramatically passionate,

“Sweet so would I.

Yet, I should kill thee with much cherishing.

Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow

That I should say good night till it be morrow.”

This is a very tender and emotional scene and the audience would be deeply moved by the young couples passion.

Soon after the marriage things go wrong for Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo murders Tybalt, Juliet is not quite sure what to think.

When Romeo and Juliet next appear in the play together, their conversation is as day breaks,

“It was lark, the herald of the morn”

Romeo also shows the breaking of dawn, when he uses the extravagant language,

“Look, love, what envious streaks.

Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east.”

Their parting is sorrowful. As Juliet looks down from the balcony to Romeo, she has a horrible idea that he looks as though he’s dead in the bottom of a tomb,

“Methinks I see thee, now thou art so law,

As one dead in the bottom of a tomb.

Either my eyesight fails, or thou look’st pale.”

Which is coincidently the next place they see each other. The idea of death lurking on Romeo makes Juliet say goodbye as if it were their last. A sense of sorrow is conveyed in this scene and the audience would feel the emotion in the scene surely feeling the sadness themselves. The audience would be very tense by now waiting to discover the mystery that lies ahead for the young couple, trying to work out whether their extraordinary love would last.

Act5 scene brings their lives to an end. Romeo describes the ending of his life as a ship that has tragically crashed upon the rocks,

“Come, bitter conduct, come unsavoury guide,

Thou desperate pilot now at once run on

The dashing rocks thy seasick weary bark.”

Romeos farewell to Juliet is very romantic. He once again worships her, like the first time he seen her. Juliet’s farewell to Romeo, although brief, is also moving. Juliet takes Romeos dagger, which she calls a lucky dagger,

“O happy dagger.”

She thinks that because the dagger belonged to Romeo, her husband, her lover, it would do her justice killing her, letting her be once more with Romeo.

The tragic death of the young lovers was sad to an Elizabethan audience, not unexpected. The Elizabethans would have understood that a love as pure as theirs was too perfect. They would not have envisioned Romeo and Juliet growing older together with their love cooling. This way the ending is satisfactory as their love is preserved forever.

Without the other minor kinds of love shown in the play, the main type of love shown between Romeo and Juliet would not seem so true and special. We are able to see the obvious differences now between the three kinds of love that I have wrote about. The play ‘Romeo and Juliet’s message, which I think Shakespeare intended was, even in death, love conquers all.

Power Play

Shakespeare- Julius Caesar

‘The nature of power play extends to all levels of human interaction’

Discuss the statement referring closely to your prescribed text and to other related texts that you have chosen.

- Power, and the lust for, is a biological characteristic borne in every human.

Therefore, consciously or subconsciously, everything we do revolves around the desire for power and the benefits that accompany it.

Point 1-

All characters have their own ambitions- some cross others stay on their course.

When they cross the potence of Power is so strong that people are caught in the ‘firing line.’

These are not victims of murderers; they are victims of Power, because Power drove the people to disregard value for human life.

Supporting Material- “Power reality means more anger, more bombs’- SMH

This shows how when power paths cross- the result is often fatal. People are essentially strung by their OWN ambitions, with no regard for others. This is a biological characteristic that accompanies power.

Part -

Is powerplay just a game? People die, so no- it is one of our fatal flaws.

Shakespeare conveys this anti-Power attitude when Caesar- the most powerful man on Earth, dies a victims death (as opposed to an Emperors death.) This proves that Shakespeare knew of the seriousness of Power, and was concerned over its control of mankind.

SERIOUSNESS OF POWER-

September 11- provides an insight into the seriousness of Power.

Essay

Power, and the lust for, is a biological characteristic borne in every human. Therefore, Consciously or subconsciously, everything we do revolves around the desire for power and the benefits that accompany it. Powerplay relates to Darwin’s theory of evolution the survival of the fittest, the ability to control or influence. It is the complex manipulation of power and power alliances on both an individual and group level. The texts Julius Caesar and the newspaper article ‘power reality means more anger, more bombs’ all display elements of powerplay. Julius Caesar is the Shakespearian telling of a part of the history of Rome. Of the dictator, Caesar who is conspired against and murdered in an effort to protect Rome. A powerful man is murdered in order for other people to gain power and influence. The newspaper article outlines how the conflict between many Muslims and westerners has become quite aggravated.

All characters have their own ambitions; in Julius Caesar the conspirators felt Caesar was too ambitious thus they killed him, as they wanted the best for the people. Some characters ambitions cross and others stay on their course. When the ambitions of the characters cross, the potence of power is so strong that people are caught in the ‘firing line.’ The ambitions of the conspirators crossed the ambitions of Caesar thus they killed him by stabbing. The ambitions of Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi/Muslim people crossed the ideas and ambitions of the allies thus warfare broke out and the result was death and destruction. These victims of crossed ambitions are not victims of murderers; they are victims of Power, because Power drove the people to disregard value for human life.

The conspirators felt that Julius Caesar was too ambitious for the role of dictator, even though he had turned down the offer of emperor times, which to many would not seem ambitious. Caesar wanted what was best for the people a people’s ruler not a ruler of the people. However Caesar’s reign was based around power and he loved the benefits he gained from his dictatorship. However, Caesar became a victim of power; when he turned down the option of becoming an emperor he immediately became more powerful in the eyes of society and the conspirators didn’t want him to have power, they wanted the power and they did what it took to gain Caesar’s power. His honourable companion Brutus became tainted by his involvement in the machinations of leadership that he turned against his life long friend. The play highlights how tenuous power can be and how even the strong can fall prey to those who are willing be more ruthless, cunning and manipulative. This shows how everything we do in our life is for the desire of power and the benefits we gain from power. Decent men are prompted to commit an act of murder because they trust to the professions of others all for the gain of power.

The text “Power reality means more anger, more bombs’- SMH, shows how when power paths cross- the result is often fatal. When different ideals collide they can often result in severe consequences. The allied forces have shown that their ideals and ambitions severely contradict or conflict with those of the Iraq parliament. The western civilisation has such superiority over that of Islam that the United States will for power by eradicating terrorism is hard for the Muslims to understand. They question how the US and its allies could simply dismiss Osama bin Laden and his al-Quaeda operatives as terrorists without debating the main question why did they do it? With the crossed paths of the Iraqi’s and the allies a devastating war resulted at the cost of hundreds of innocent Muslim lives without the substantiation that Saddam Hussein’s regime possessed weapons of mass destruction and was linked to international terrorism. Because of these mere predictions people are essentially strung by their own ambitions, with no regard for others. George W. Bush simply wanted sweet revenge for September 11; his decision to wage war so he could gain more power was ridiculed and demonstrated against. He sent troops to go and kill Iraqi’s yet while doing it many infantry were killed, most as a result of friendly fire. Once again the struggle for power results in the deaths of innocent people. This is the biological characteristic that accompanies power.

Is powerplay just a game? People die, so no- it is one of our fatal flaws. Shakespeare conveys this anti-Power attitude when Caesar- the most powerful man on Earth, dies a victim’s death (as opposed to an Emperors death.) This proves that Shakespeare knew of the seriousness of Power, and was concerned over its control of mankind.
