On November 1, 1755, Lisbon, Portugal was shaken by a large earthquake just offshore. “I woke up on a fine November morning , the day was going to be Glorious or so I thought. I went to work as normal but there was one thing that wasn’t normal. As I came to the docks a same shake was felt. I took nothing of it , I probably thought it was a large lorry. Then I felt a massive shake , I then realised that was no lorry in was a earthquake. I automatically ran to the subway, there I thought I would have been safe. As I got to the subway many people were running, crying, screaming. People were on fire. The huge buildings around us were shaking from side to side . It was only a matter of time before they collapsed. Glass was falling from the buildings, the people were being pierced. It was a sick site. That’s all I can really remember, I am still very traumatised.


The quake triggered a tsunami, which arrived soon afterwards. As usual the first indication was that the water drew back from the land. Soon, however, the water came back with a wave estimated at 50 feet high crashing through the city. Ships, docks and buildings in the city
