The last remaining droplets of the rain fell silently and a rainbow was formed not far away from where the old man sat, staring blindly into the sky. He could hear the children screaming in the playground, pedestrians walking along the footpath and recognised a few familiar voices around him.

The old man inhaled a lungful of air and found a soothing sense of comfort in it, remembering the long lost afternoons in his youthful years when he took pleasure in watching the birds fly high in the sky. Somewhere in his forgotten past he was able to see the world around him with his sky blue eyes. He remembered the time when he took advantage of this God given gift and he began to feel the loss and sorrow even more.

His hearing sharpened as he heard a young voice calling out his name. It was his own grandson who ran eagerly towards the worn out bench where his grandfather sat, wearing an old brown vest, holding his walking stick tight in his worn out hands so that he would not lose his only tool of survival.

The old man recognised his childish voice and a smile appeared on his face, though it was hard to distinguish among the numerous wrinkles on his face. From the day he was born, there was an obvious connection between the old man and his grandson and as the years went by their friendship became stronger and their meetings more frequent. The child was almost seven years old, eighty years younger than his grandfather, but the age gap did not affect their relationship.

Hi grandpa the child exclaimed as he kissed the old man on the cheek. The child did not allow the elder man to speak. He was very excited about his new school and the new friends he had made and could not wait to tell his grandfather all about his busy day. He described the school in very fine details so that the old man was able to picture the classroom, the children, the different coloured chalks the teacher used on the blackboard, the laughs and the screams of the children at recess and lunchtime as well as the things they learnt, pictures they drew and conversation that took place throughout the day.

Jack had replaced his grandfathers eyesight. Since he watched and described the world from the eyes of a child, the old man was once more able to feel as though he too was young. The excitement, the energy and the liveliness of the boy had given the old man a chance of a new life.

After hours of conversation, the two sat on the old bench and watched the sunset. Its beautiful Jack told his grandfather. The sun looks so big from here. Its almost as big as an orange. Well, half an orange, with a red cloud surrounding it…I wish you could see it grandpa…the whole sky is red! I think Im going to draw the sunset tomorrow at school. Itll be perfect dont you think grandpa? I might even draw us…Just the two of us, watching the sun set together, here on the bench, in this park…Its going to be the best picture Ive ever drawn grandpa…I cant wait!

Fireworks: A Dangerous Spectacle

It is late at night, and you see a big flash overhead, and a beautiful display of fireworks. You think to yourself, hey it isn’t the Fourth of July, what’s going on? Chances are, some kids are lighting fireworks off illegally, and not being very safe about it either. A lot of kids, and adults too, light off fireworks illegally in Minnesota. There are reasons that fireworks are illegal in Minnesota; they are dangerous and a fire hazard too. A lot of people say that Minnesota should change its law because people will light them off anyway, and fireworks aren’t that big a deal. Minnesota should not legalize fireworks because of the obvious health risks, and the states emergency costs that would rise because of this.

Right now in the state of Minnesota, it is illegal to use, buy, or have fireworks in your possession. Many people feel as if Minnesota should legalize them, and sell them here. There are a couple main reasons that people want to legalize fireworks. Everybody realizes that people light off fireworks all the time in Minnesota, and buys them other places, and smuggles them back into Minnesota. These people are saying that Minnesota should legalize fireworks and sell them, and make a profit for our state. There is a lot of money in the fireworks business, and Minnesota is missing out on this because they are illegal. Another reason is that when fireworks are illegal, kids especially try to use fireworks very secretly and a lot of times they do it in a careless fashion. If fireworks were legal, parents and kids could enjoy fireworks together, and safety with fireworks would improve because parents could teach kids the right way to use them. There are a lot of good information and arguments out there on how fireworks should be legal, but these aren’t as strong as the government’s arguments on keeping them illegal.

According to the Charlotte Fire Department, “The mishandling of fireworks over the last three years has resulted in 75 fires, and many more cases of personal injury”(Fire Safety Tips). Fireworks are a big hazard to the safety of kids, and the safety of property. Fireworks are directly related to a lot of fires around the United States, and injuries of many kids. According to the magazine Pediatrics, “An estimated 8500 individuals, approximately 45% of them children younger than 15 years, were treated in US hospital emergency departments during 1 for fireworks-related injuries”(Fireworks, Related Injuries to Children). According Clark Shove Robinson, an explosives expert that wrote the book Explosions, Their Anatomy And Destructiveness, “An explosion consists of the very sudden production of large quantities of gases, usually hot, from a much smaller amount of a solid, liquid, or gas”(Robinson). I wouldn’t want my kids playing with explosives, and I don’t think these explosive devices should be legal in Minnesota. Health isn’t the only reason the government doesn’t want to legalize fireworks though. According to the Minnesota Legislative Policies web page, “Legalizing Fireworks would increase public safety enforcement, emergency response, and fire-suppression costs”(Legislation of Fireworks). A lot of people think that legalizing fireworks would automatically turn a profit for our state. A lot of money would be spent on extra costs involving fireworks, and these two things would probably equal each other out or maybe make a little profit, but not as big as some people think.

I think the government will leave the law the way it is for now. There is no real reason for it to change, because it’s really not that big an issue, and they will probably never get around to changing it. I am fine with that though, because I think Minnesota is working well now as it is, and doesn’t need another health and fire hazard to worry about. Looking at both different sides of the issue made me realize how dangerous and risky fireworks actually are, and we don’t need that here in our state.

Minnesota should keep fireworks illegal and let them stay in the states that think they are ok light off. Although fireworks are cool for holidays such as the Fourth of July, it is not worth legalizing them and raising the risk of injury in Minnesota. Realizing full well that people will fire them off anyway, I still think they should stay illegal because by them being illegal, people just can’t use them anywhere and not worry about getting into trouble. They would still be fired off, but the keeping them will be a deterrent at least. Fireworks should stay illegal, and make it harder for people to use them in Minnesota, therefore making it a better, and safer state to live in.

Camus discusses the estrangement of an individual in a benign and indifferent universe, one in which conformity prevails. He not only satirizes the conformity of society, but religion and the legal system as well. Throughout part one of the novel Meursault focuses primarily on the physical world, leaving emotions almost completely out of the picture. This works to develop Meursault’s philosophy that is grounded in the objective, physical world. Later it is revealed that Meursault is not very religious at all, mainly because he refuses to accept the standard beliefs. He questions conformity and subsequently chooses his own path to understanding. In The Encounter with Nothingness it is stated that “Religion to medieval man was not so much a theological system as a solid psychological matrix surrounding the individual’s life from birth to death, sanctifying and enclosing all its ordinary and extraordinary occasions in sacrament and ritual” (4). In refusing the assumptions of religion, Meursault is forced to create his own conception of the world, one that is devoid of ulterior significance. This ultimately leads him astray from what is normal, and causes people of society to look down on him with contempt. In approaching this paper I ask, why is it taboo to not embrace a God but embrace your mind instead? Why can’t we all realize that we are alone and that we must find meaning in our lives because we are alive, not because someone or something wants us to live a certain way? In reading this novel the answer seems simple, because you will be killed for it. But it is more than this, and Meursault attempts to justify the irrationality of blind acceptance.

In the beginning of the book, Meursault’s mothers death briefly interrupts the pleasant flow of his life, a life devoted to appreciating physical sensation. He enjoys eating, drinking, and smoking cigarettes. He loves to watch the sea and the sky. Swimming and making love to pretty girls like Marie are his favorite pastimes, to such an extent that a job promotion in Paris does not appeal to him. When something bores him or distresses him he goes to sleep, as he does on the bus to his mothers funeral and even in jail. He is a detached observer of life. Symbolic of this quality is the Sunday he spends watching life in his neighborhood from his apartment window. He notices the excitement of returning athletes as “They were shouting and singing at the top of their lungs that their team would never die. Sever of them waved to me... and I nodded, as if to say Yes” (). Camus describes in detail the street scenes yet never does Meursault become involved in them. Even with all of the excitement on the street, Meursault barely shows any reaction at all. He seems to be content merely observing and trying to understand for himself. This idea, that people should come to their own conclusions, is common throughout the rest of the book.

Meursault is distant from the messiness of plans, ambitions, desires, hatreds, even love. Maries protestations of love only puzzle him. When she asks him if he wishes to marry her he agrees only because he sees no real reason to refuse. He helps in Raymonds schemes for equally bland reasons, and also because Raymond supplies him with food, drink, and cigarettes. He is even distant from his own trial. It interests him because he has never seen a trial before. This distance, or strangeness, stems from the idea Meursault has, that he is just as common or equal as any other being. Because if he is just as common as anyone else, why should he try to force his own agenda when everyone else’s is just as worthy. This commonness may also help to explain why Meursault never shows emotional attachment to Marie, but uses her more like an outlet for his passions. When she asks if he loves her, his response is blunt as he “told her that it didn’t mean anything but that I didn’t think so” (5). Directly after that he comments that he wants her again. So while their relationship is sturdy on a physical level, Meursault has no intention of moving it beyond that. When discussing their future, Meursault agrees to marriage simply because he has no reason not to and he doesn’t want to end the physical relationship. When she objects to this by pointing “out that marriage was a serious thing. [He] said ‘No” (4).This helps to show Meursault’s rejection of the value society puts on certain customs and rituals. This relates to his rejection of religion and subsequent creation of separate personal values. He disregards marriage as superfluous and merely for show. Marie simply fits into the situation Meursault wants that he be with someone. This is evident when he is in jail as he tells how he is “tormented by my desire for a woman... I never thought specifically of Marie. But I though so much about a woman, about women” (77). This commonness overlaps to Meursault’s thoughts on his mother. Just as Marie is merely a woman he spent time with, his mother is merely someone who gave birth to him. Anyone could have done it, it just happen to be her. In this way Meursault shows to real connection with his mother. When asked if he loved his mother, he replies “Yes, the same as anyone” (67). This shows his absolute relation to everyone else as fellow mankind, nothing more and nothing less. In seeing that his mother lived and died, just as everyone else does, he shows no special concern for her. In the same way, he gives himself no special attention. This is evident when Meursault’s boss offers him a job promotion in Paris and Meursault seems utterly indifferent. It is because such a change in situations ultimately does not effect anything as Meursault states “That people never change their lives, that in any case one life was as good as another and that I wasn’t dissatisfied with mine here at all” (41). This represents much of what Meursault stands. He acts as though our actions hold no consequences except in death, and anyone who thinks differently is lying to themselves in order to grasp some meaning in life that is not there.

Meursault seems unconcerned with legal and religious proceedings while staying alert to any physical discomfort. He responds to his body without questioning it, and this often leads him places society forbids but his body requires. When going through his legal proceedings, he is asked for his thoughts on the matter and responds “I had pretty much lost the habit of analyzing myself and that it was hard for me to tell him what he wanted to know... my nature was such that my physical needs often got in the way of my feelings” (65). This is essential in the explanation of his feelings for his mother, in that he might have felt some remorse over her death but was distracted. While he never mentioned himself crying, he notices many people crying at the funeral and understands that people do cry over funerals. Later on when Salamano looses his dog, Meursault makes the connection to his lost mother. Meursault listens as he “Realized he [Salamana] was crying. For some reason I thought of Maman. But I had to get up early the next morning. I wasn’t hungry, so I went to sleep without dinner” (). Rather than dwelling on the death of his mother, it occurs to him that he will be tired if he doesn’t sleep enough, and to prevent the discomfort he goes to sleep.

Just as he refused the temptation for legal redemption during his trial, he refuses the metaphysical redemption offered by the chaplain. He is faithful to his beliefs, limited though they are. He has struggled in prison with the concept of death. Death negates all those beautiful experiences he so enjoys. The confrontation with the inevitability of death and for the first time, the first, I laid my heart open to the benign indifference of the universe. Death, just as life, is meaningless. By not concerning himself with his mother he has destroyed his past. By refusing to plan for committed relationships, like one with Marie, he negates his future. So he lives solely for the moment at hand, and solely for himself and not others. He absolutely refuses to lie about his emotions even though that stand will cost him his life. He knows he is convicted of the Arabs murder because he did not mourn for his mother. Yet he does not pander to this societal expectation. His is a narrow kind of integrity, but one nonetheless. He says yes to life--to his life of sun, sea, sex, food, drink, and all of physical reality. He is an aesthete of every day life.

He is a very ordinary man who said no to a certain kind of lie, and who said yes to the beauty of life. Perhaps in his affirmation of life Meursault is faithful to a transcendent value-- a belief in the significance of human nature. It seems like Meursault was the only authentic character in the book as he never betrayed himself for the sake of others. All the other characters are in response to those around them, deriving personality traits from the status quo. I take the view of Camus on the subject of the meaning of life. To me, life becomes meaningful only when I am reinventing it on my own terms. What greater freedom could a man possibly have than to be placed in a situation where he is able to define himself on his own terms?

Scene two

While the tutorial Rita and Frank are talking about the discussion between Rita and some “oral” students about literature. Rita was invited by one student to come to France with him and Frank tells her not to go because of the exams at Christmas.

Rita seems to be very proud and more self- assured you can see that Frank is very bad- tempered about this. He wants to forbid Rita everything, e.g. going to France, talking with a “new” voice (like Trish adviced her), etc.

Scene three and four

It’s time for Frank’s weekly tutorial to Rita, but this time he enters the room being totally drunk. Before doing his lectures he felt off the rostrum twice, and the heads of the university suggested that it might be good for him to leave the college for some time.

Rita is about to walk out, but Frank pulls her back. He starts a fight about Rita’s essay on Blake’s poem “The Blossom”, although the essay is not what they are really talking about. Rita is changing and Frank is afraid that she will loose everything that made her so special and will become like all other “educated people”.

But apparently that is what Rita wants, so she asks him to give her some room for herself, to leave her alone a bit.

In the next scene Rita enters the room . but she is late for her tutorial. Frank is upset, because he thinks that Rita is moving away from him. He struggles with the educated world and doesn’t want to loose Rita on them. Frank makes things worse by acting like a lover, a jealous husband. He asks her about everything she does and complains about the way she acts. Rita doesn’t need Frank anymore, but now Frank needs Rita.

They get into a fight which Frank breaks up by handing her some sheets of his own poetry. He wants Rita to write an essay about it, due the next week.

Scene five

Rita likes Frank’s poems but he hasn’t the same opinion. He rips them up. A trouble between Rita and Frank thickens because he is angry that she is independent now and she can live without his help.

Scene six

Frank tries to call Rita to tell her where and when the examination takes place, but she isn’t at home. He said to Rita’s flatmate that he has entered her for her exam.

Scene seven

Frank is sacked and so he packed his books into the chests because he has to go to Australia for years. Rita thanks Frank for entering her for the exam. Frank gives her a dress for an educated woman and Rita cuts his hair.

Marketing Launching a new product

This assignment considers some aspects on how to launch a new product in to the marked, and pick out the main factors of marketing.

To get a new product out on the market is it important to have a marketing strategy. This is a strategy on how to “attack” the market. To find a target group, some instrument or resources have to be used. We often refer to these instruments, as The Four Ps. The Ps stands for Product, Prise, Place and Promotion.

The market strategy is the first step in developing a marketing plan. To fulfil the marketing plan we need the budget, time schedule and delegate assignment to the employees.

Before you start to produce and market the new product we need to scrutinize the market, to see if it is ready for your product. There are several factors involving these criteria. Are there similar products on the market? How long before you can launch it? Is the product facing a saturated market? Are you able to reach your customers, and do they need / want your product?

Product is the most important factor of The Four Ps. A product is not just a collection of components. It also includes the image, design, quality and reliability as well as its features and benefits. The product is the main factor on deciding the price on a product, and what kind of communication and distribution canal a company ought to use. To set the price on your product there are other factors you also have to look into, the price charged by the competitors, the ability of the customer to pay and the volume of sales required.

Other factors you have to look into when placing your product are the competitors’ choice of distribution and the distribution costs. You also have to think about the size and functionality of the product.

When the market is ready for your product, promotion and place of distribution needs to be prioritised. Depending on the product and target group, we need to use the right promotion. Is it something that needs both vision and sound? (Cinema, TV) Only sound? (Radio, telephone) Only vision? (Magazine, newspapers) Or how about send out e-mail or place an advertisement on the Internet? All of these alternatives have advantages and disadvantages, so you have to find the most effective and cost effective method that reaches your target.

There are also several methods on how to get products out to the customers. We can mention sponsored products like cell phone, products for everyday use like washing equipment, or articles of luxury like sports cars and cloths and shoes for brand conscious customers.

At the beginning of the story “Going Home” we are given the feeling that Billy Woodward feels alone and out of place, when he is sitting in his new Kingswood he thinks to himself, “Oh lord oh lord, I want to go home.” In this essay I will be investigating the fact that like Billy Woodward in the first story, all the Aboriginals in the stories feel “out of place and alone”.

“Going Home” the first story in this book of short stories tells the reader about Billy Woodward, a young Aboriginal man who has left his Aboriginal heritage to become an artist. From the opening page the reader gets a feeling of Billy feeling alone and out of place. He does not live the life of an Aboriginal man; he is no longer in touch with his heritage or the “river of his dreaming”. He is alone whenever he goes out with the “white people” when he goes out to the bars and nightclubs, he sits alone at a corner table with a “painted up white girl”. We learn in the first few pages that he feels out of place and alone and wants to return back “home” not back to his place surrounded by loud noises and bright lights, but back to where he grew up back where he is surrounded by his people and nature.

In the story “Johnny Blue” the reader meets two characters, a white teenager Johnny Blue and an Aboriginal teenager Jesse Maguire, although Jesse Maguire isn’t alone due to the fact he has other Aboriginal children around him, but this doesn’t change the fact that he feels alone and so do all the other Aboriginal children, this is apparent throughout the story on many occasions when Jesse along with other Aboriginal kids get picked on, simply because they are dark skinned, further more in this story we also see evidence that even white people who “stick up” for the Aboriginals can feel out of place, alone and rejected. The reader is told that Johnny Blue does not have many friends at school nor in the town apart from the Aboriginals, he was known as, “Johnny Blue, the Abos’ mate.”

The only people in the stories who do not seem out of place are the white people. The white people band together and some sort of a mob mentality forms, this is apparent in the short story, “Herbie”, where a young Aboriginal teen, since he was a little kid had been bullied, as it seems purely because he was dark skinned, unlike Jesse Maguire in the “Johnny Blue” Herbie did not have anyone to stick up for him and as we are told in the story never told anyone about what happened to him. He was alone, no one to stick up for him and no one to talk to. Being called a “Dirty boong” and a “Black bastard” would make one feel “unsure” and “out of place”.

In all of the stories we are shown that each Aboriginal character feels unsure and out of place, the only place where they get some sort of acceptance is back in the “all-black” townships in which they are confined. Maybe if the roles were totally reversed and white people were treated like the Aboriginals in these stories were, for just a day. I’m sure everyone would learn to accept one another and finally understand that skin, is just skin.

Inflation and Unemployment

In the following paper, we are going to assess inflation and unemployment with the Internet article, People Prefer Inflation to Prospect of Job Loss. Justin Wolfers, an assistant professor of political economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, is the author of this article. In this analysis of the article, we are going to provide definitions of inflation and unemployment. Then, we are going to consider the economic impact of the main points in the article on the economy and society’s feelings toward unemployment.

In order to provide a clear understanding of our article, we are going to define the terms inflation and unemployment. According to David Colander, inflation is “a continual rise in the price level” (Macroeconomics, p. 148). This reflects how much the prices in an economy have risen over time. The increase of prices of goods over time is the price index; therefore, the price index is a measurement of time compared to the yearly measurement of inflation. To calculate inflation, we are using the price index for a year’s time. Currently, economists are using the year of 184 as a base, and inflation represents this increment over a period. The next term we are defining is unemployment. According to the William King on-line dictionary, unemployment refers to the condition of being with out a job or to the proportion of people who can and will work but are unemployed (William King, 00).

With the definitions of inflation and unemployment, we are now going to assess the economic impact of the main points in the article on the economy and society’s feelings toward unemployment. The economic impact of unemployment is the possibility of recession. According to Justin Wolfers, “Recessions really hurt, and the governments and their central banks need to be aware of the importance of avoiding them” (pg. 1, 00). When unemployment rates are at its highest rate since August 14, the results are alarming to the economy. In the U.S. economy, there is a total work force of 145,801,000, and there are 16,78,000 people currently employed. This means that there is an unemployment rate of 6.% (Labor Force Data, 00). This unemployment rate affects not only the unemployed people, but also employed people. The employed people start to feel as though they can loose their job at anytime. With this job uncertainty people feel, people would rather save money than spend money, which creates financial insecurity that has a negative effect on the economy.

Now that we have determined the effects on the economy, we need to consider the effects on people’s sense of satisfaction. Justin Wolfers has done research on how the effects of inflation and unemployment affect people’s satisfaction. Justin Wolfers gathered data on life satisfaction compared to the rates of inflation and unemployment from different European countries and the Unites States from 17 through 18. This research shows us that people feel more stress when they cannot find a job than when prices are rising. From the information contained in the survey, the research shows that rising joblessness is roughly five times more troubling to people than rising prices. High unemployment rate in a region, according to Wolfers, “lowers average feelings of usefulness, confidence, and happiness and raises depression and feelings of worthlessness”(pg. 1, 00). People also feel a loss of faith in the government, corporate sectors, and banking sectors, which can lead to a recession (Wolfers, 00).

In conclusion, we have assessed inflation and unemployment with the Internet article, People Prefer Inflation to Prospect of Job Loss by Justin Wolfers. We provided definitions of inflation and unemployment to help explain the content of the article. Inflation is a continual rise in the price level, which took the price index’s measurement of time over a year to calculate inflation. Finally, we considered the economic impact of the main points in the article on the economy and society’s feeling toward unemployment. The financial insecurity has had a negative effect on the economy because of job uncertainties. Since people were saving their money, the prices did not increase keeping inflation from increasing. The research showed that people felt more stressed when they could not find a job than when prices were rising. People felt a felt less useful, confidence, and happiness and there was a raise in depression and feelings of worthlessness.
